Interview RPG Codex Interview: Dan Vávra (Warhorse Studios)

Daniel.Vavra were you talking about RPG Codex when the Czech games show "re-play" asked about definition of an RPG, when at the end, after presenting your definition, you said something along the lines of "but I was on this server the other day and found out I'm weird in that opinion"?

Today, computers are powerful enough for accurate real-time visuals with all the simulation calculated in the background, and the controls are so sophisticated that it's possible to make very accurate skill-based simulation of combat or movement. So the RPG is no more about the dices and stats—it could be completely skill-based and it will finally resemble the real world as we all desired back in the days of pen and paper. Of course, a lot of people who are used to old rules or don’t like skill-based video games will not like it, but that's not important

Yeah, no thank you to you and your "realistic" RPG... Next you'll claim Chess went out of style because someone invented Monopoly with flashing disco-pieces.

Do I need to requote the fact that this man sees the RPG genre as a glorified FPS?

A role playing game is anything that allows you to make personality choices through your character that influence the outcome of things in the world.--Josh Sawyer

I'm not discussing whether this game is an RPG or not (in fact I couldn't care less), I'm saying the notion that everyone "back in the days of pen and paper" desired an open-world action game is ridicoulous and I think any developer who says dice and stats are passé should be ridiculed at the Codex.

So, Super Mario is a role playing game.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
I don't give a fuck how closely this fits to any definition of RPG as long as it's going to be a good game. The underlying systems are the very least problem with modern first person explorefag RPGs like the latest Bethesda efforts - the game design is much more important. If this game actually has good exploration, good gameplay and good encounter design, it's going to be awesome. And what little you can see of the combat in that teaser is already pretty good - your weapon doesn't just go through the enemy without being stopped like in Skyrim, when the helmet is hit it actually stops the blow.

I'm very optimistic for this game. Wish you the best of luck, Daniel.Vavra, in getting this game finished and released just the way you envision it. :salute:

And while you're at it, tell us a bit about the combat system, would you? :P

Along with this features, a game must have and interesting setting, narrative and character interactions to be truly awesome. This setting already looks good, let's see if the narrative and character interactions is up to par.

Impressive little video there. I could enjoy a game like that

The only thing I ask is no quirky/childish "European" humour or over-the-top medieval caricature type stuff like in Gothics/Witcher/Spellforce etc., and that includes over the top accents and voice acting. I can't stand that shit.

Yes, make the voice acting in medieval Czech, medieval Latin and/or High Middle German instead. That would be awesome and enhance the atmosphere tremendously.

I just enjoy good action games with RPG elements. Nothing wrong about that. And it's about time someone made a good action game again.

and the boxom bussom was not half bad either.

though the haircuts may be a little too much. some things are better left in the distant past.

Pff, someone should make a late antiquity/early middle ages RPG with Frankish or Norman haircuts.

You don't make personality choices through your character that influence the outcome of things in the world in any Mario game.

You could decide that Mario is too cowardly to rescue the princess, thus letting Bowser King Koopa rule over the Mushroom Kingdom.

:troll:
You're not making the decision through the character, you're LARPing. It's not in Mario's predefined personality to give up.

So Diablo is not an RPG?
