Is no one even considering any other possibilities. Maybe Tim Cain has some relative that plays skyrim on his steam account. Maybe he left it running one weekend when he wasnt at home. Maybe he put 1000 hours into daggerfall and 500 hours into Morrowind and just played Skyrim in the hope it would somehow magically change into one of those games.
There are a lot of possible situations inside of which someones hours spent in steam might not actually reflect their preference in games. That said old people seem to like Skyrim. I've met several seniors that play it.
Edit to save from extra post : idc if tim does or doesn't like skyrim. I am just trying to say that his steam profile doesn't prove skyrim is his favourite game
Also I aint into consipracies. I am just hard to prove things to.

it should be written in such a way that doesn't get people's emotions up so that they can see the logic and facts of your points.

My grammar is super good.
I'm not critiquing your grammar.
No, you are just a dumbass if you don't get what he wanted to say. It is obvious that most people are not flaming the review because Roxor didn't like the game, and listed a lot of negatives, but because the tone of the review is cynical, flamey, almost like trolling.

Or maybe, maaaybe, he just likes the game. Because it is an OK game, which many Codexers enjoy themselves. God, some people should really take a break and stop drawing conclusions from other people steam library. It's like grown up people should be ashamed of their gaming habits just because some edgy tryhards trolls them on the Codex.

So what if Tim like Skyrim, so what if MCA plays Dragon Age Inqusition? So fuckin what?

The cognitive dissonance is strong in this one.
Tim Cain has repeatedly said he liked Fallout 3 for example. And we have his steam profile to confirm the kind of games he likes. Can't you into occam's razor? jeez. Or do you think that, saying he's lying about the games he plays, and that somehow, skyirm and borderlands ended up being the only games he left running during the week end, all conspiracy like, makes more sense than the simple truths?

I bet you would make for a solid Cleve sidekick with your natural tendency to lean toward conspitard train of thoughts.

Comfortable people often don't make the best art 'tis true

It is not about being comfortable. I’m pretty sure the average teenager that don’t pay the bills is more comfortable than the average adult. It’s about passion and focus. It is easier being creative when game development is a novelty to you and you think in games most of the time, but is harder after 20 years doing the same thing and having another priorities.

I spent a lot of time with Oblivion just picking flowers, thats what I imagine seniors use Skyrim for, hiking/flower picking simulator. Also, whenever I see your avatar there's a voice in my head that goes :"I sense a soul in search of answers" no clue why.

So Tim Cain's tastes align with the majority of the Codex tastes? I'm not seeing the problem.

The resistance seems plausible if you think that (1) we know that he would say he love these games, even if he hated them, because he don’t want to burn bridges, and (2) because the games he did are very different. But yeah, you are right. The steam account does not lie. The Tim Cain that people idealize here at the Codex, an almost immaculate religious figure that will be only associated with classics from the past, exists only in their heads.

I thought the review was good. It listed pretty much every single flaw of the game and expanded upon it.

I guess butthurt fanboys can't handle the cold hard truth that their favorite developer made a game that is just mediocre. I hope everyone at Obsidian gets to read the review, maybe they'll actually make a worthwhile sequel.

I know someone who has over 700 hours in FNV according to steam. They mostly play in offline mode too. Does this mean they should be a dev for Obsidian Entertainment ?

Edit: I got to say though I havent even played most of those games to be able to comment on them other than obviously skyrim sucks.

I still remember fondly the day when a friend of mine barged into my house with 4 floppy disks, in that distant year of 1992. He said: "Hey! I've got this cool game here. It's called Ultima Underworld! You should try it. I think you'll like it!"

4 fuckin' floppy disks!! For a game that I had never heard of in my life before.

Nowadays some guys get a buget of 3.000.000$ to make a game that only fits in 2 DVDs. Said game is released after an over-hype of several years. The game is mediocre.
Not good. Not bad. Just mediocre.

FO/FO2 and BG/BG2 were created by young guys full of energy, working seven days a week, poorly feed, unwashed and without a care in the world beside playing more games. POE and W2 were made by oldfarts that develop games for a living, have wives, mortgage to pay, kids and another million distractions that suck most of their energy. Do you want more classics? Take a good look at the guys that are making their first games. They have the necessary passion to achieve greatness.
In my humble opinion, PoE is a much, MUCH better game than BG (which was a generic and shallow game; if not for the pretty art, it would have been instantly forgotten as design-wise it couldn't be compared to role-playing juggernauts like Darklands, Realms of Arkania, and Jagged Alliance). Fortunately, pretty art sells like hotcakes, which explains the decline.

WL2 - it's a flawed game by today's standards but the joke is that it IS an old school game, exactly like WL. Enlightened youngsters think that old school means 'awesome and deep, man' when more often than not it meant EXACTLY what WL2 delivered - stupid fun.

Obsidian could do worse than hiring a guy with 700 hours of New Vegas, look at how good inxile is doing after they hired sea , who holds the world record for hours spent playing Choplifter HD

I'll tell her to go hit them up then. She knows how to mod but not how to code. That shouldn't be a problem right ?

I'm starting to think VD's review thread will have even more pages than this one. Laying in the popcorn supplies now.

I am simply stating that if you expect the review to be taken more seriously, it should be written in such a way that doesn't get people's emotions up so that they can see the logic and facts of your points.

Seeing the general reception for the game, it seems doubtful that our critique would be paid much attention any way.

I certainly do hope that the same points that we've raised have already come up in Obs' internal playthroughs. Seeing that the same cons are repeatedly coming up from multiple people here. Didn't anyone complain about Act II ending, for example?

Better to write through ranty personality than have no personality at all.

Also if you're a developer with 5-10-20 years of experience, going through a ranty review should not pose you any problem at all, especially concidering there are posters on your company's forum who larp and add "HA GOOD FUN" in their every post.
People face harder shit in their lives on daily basis.

There are even developers who come here and say they enjoy the honesty and criticism and do take it seriously. Although, it's hard not to take 'dex seriously at that point when it throws money into your kickstarters.

I just hope Anthony Davis has enough balls to keep posting here. I like that guy.
Now that you mention him, I have not seen him in a while in RPG section. Sawyer might have cut off his hands so he cannot post what PoE devs think of Codex spiting on PoE in last few weeks :D

Conspiracy theories about Sawyer being a hand collector aside - the reality is that between:

1. Having a family
2. Making preparations for a road trip to a funeral
3. WORK
4. Playing PoE, Bloodborne, Hearthstone, and GTA5

I simply havn't had the time.
So that means you will be telling us all about how PoE devs talk about Codex after this review? :)

Nobody will disagree with you: POE is better than BG. I only have fond memories of BG because it was the first game that I played that tried to implement some pen & paper system. But the only reason I mentioned BG is that BG2 wouldn’t be possible without it.

Concerning W2, the “this is was an oldschool game looks like” excuse will not stick because W2 aimed things that are definitely not oldschool, such as C&C, and did it in an uneven manner – many quests are poorly written. If some oldschool games are pure filler combat, so much worse for Inxile. They should have done things different. Some feelings of nostalgia shouldn’t be nurtured. Besides, you know what I think about this: C&C and filler content as design principles works in opposite directions. I know I’m not “enlightened”. I’m learning each day at a time, playing the old and the new, but I can also form my own opinions.

I played much more Skyrim then Tim.

It is such a game that entices just meandering around while you actively try to avoid the main plot or its "quests".
A very lite, superficial time sinker that was sufficiently better then mindbogglingly bad and horrible obliblion and that came at the time when there was no other such game around.

Tim Cain is beyond your reproach peons.

Let me guess. It explains a lot, but for some mysterious reason you cannot share what it explains right ?
