Good review. As others have said it does a good job of focusing on big picture stuff.

The only thing I didn't like was the comparison of RtwP and TB. This has been going on for years. It comes across propaganda-like and makes it hard to take this review and the Codex seriously. IMO, It would've been better to use those words to compare the differences of this system to the D&D systems of other RtwP games.

Call me cynical or just plain wrong (this is personal supposition more or less), but i think lack of sales isn't really linked to quality, the larger media at hand all adore it, the steam reviews are very positive. I think it's just because it's seen as a old school 2D product sold on nostalgia.

People wondering why D:OS outsold PoE should also consider the jewtubers.

It had a lot going for it when it came out. Pretty 3D graphics, lack of competition, the kickstarter was to add stuff to a near enough finish game IIRC.

Do you have a source for these actual sales numbers?

D:OS made significantly more noise and stayed a long time in the top 10. Pillars disappeared from the top 10 in 2 weeks. You can deny that it didn't made as much noise and I don't care since it's not something I have a direct proof for.

Remember, sales is proof of quality when games you hate don't sell well, while it is just proof of the stupidity of the masses when skyrim sells 10 billion

I have them for steam:
PoE
D:OS

As you can see, D:OS has more than twice the total number of sales on steam, so he is technically correct that it outsould PoE. However, it is also nearly a year older and therefore has had more time for more sales. The more relevant data is in the yearly players graph. You can clearly see that PoE initially had double the number of of players online that D:OS did, however, that number dropped a lot faster than D:OS's numbers did.

One may either attribute this to word of mouth sales being relatively stronger for D:OS, as Jagged Appliance seemed to be suggesting, or perhaps that players became bored of PoE faster...or perhaps it is merely the fact that it was released during the school year, whereas D:OS came out in the summer time...

And of course none of these numbers actually reflect the amount of money either game has made - especially since D:OS's price has varied quite a bit.

Well it's not the same thing, Skyrim is an AAA game while PoE and D:OS arguably belong to the same niche. D:OS has some shit that appeals to mass market though, like the WoW visual style and Co-Op so hard to say.

Don't forget DOS is a co-op game so every time Larian sells a copy there's a proc chance of getting an extra sale

There was the risk of it negatively impacting the single-player experience but Larian handled it p. well

Player's word-of-mouth is pretty important too. For me personally, D: OS and PoE "lifecylces" went rather differently (bwcker bwta included):

D: OS:

Beta:
- Wow, this looks and sounds really nice
- Hey, gameplay's fun
- Damn, that's a lot of map
- Oh hee hee, typical Larian writing, ok, silly it is
- Man can't wait to play this in co-op
- Recommend to friends

Release:
- Ok, this is more polished than beta and beta was nice
- Shit works, woop
- Time to grab someone for co-op and blow them up on buried mine in doctor's yard!
- Combo fields!
- Recommend to friends

PoE:

Beta:
- Looking pretty!
- Fuck this combat
- Fuck this combat takes forever to resolve
- I hope they'll fix it by release
- Cautious

Release:
- Looking pretty!
- Nice music!
- Combat doesn't consist of beetles, hm, maybe this is gud, intro map suggests I can skip combat
- Hm, not bad, not bad, this is pretty good stuff, good thing they addressed the issues I had with beta
- Recommend to friends
- Get to Act 2
- Oh hi beetles, oh hi troll/goo packs
- What happened to story
- Act 2 ends
- Remove recommendations; "well it's pretty" and "Two characters are written by Avellone" as hedging tactic.

It is absolutely legit to compare these two games. After all, PoE is a shit game while DOS is a cool game. It's the most to-the-point comparison one can make

This review.....was not what I expected.

Granted that RTwP is complete shit, I can understand very little discussion on the mechanics. But this last review felt like it made Roxor's points without the actual analysis. Oh, and of course without the crazy edgelordness as well.

5/10. Would not read again. Too bad. I usually really like VD's writing.

Still waiting on Sensuki's review. :M
