A small gripe, but I would consider Sengoku Rance an SRPG, yet it didn't make the SRPG listing in the sub-genre lists.
I think SRPG these days refers mainly to fire emblem and its ilk (see for example https://store.steampowered.com/app/857320/SRPG_Studio/ an engine dedicated solely to making fire emblem clones). So it might be considered questionable to put sengoku in there. It is for sure a strategy/rpg hybrid though.
Rance... is Lance in Engrish isn't it
Nah, it's officially Rance these days, although I think it was originally romaji'd to Lance. Rance's various icons and heraldry in the later games often contain a single capital R as the only letter, even in the japanese version.

Insert Title Here RPG Wokedex Codex Year of the Donut I'm very into cock and ball torture
Good for what it is, with many things to disagree on, but still a decent guide to finding JRPGs that aren't terrible.

Also Dark Spire is fantastic, I did everything including the ultimate ending and it is one of the most pleasant, based Wizardry-games there is.

Edit: there IS a lot of crap on the list as well; I have problems with nearly every second pick, but that's the nature of lists like that, I guess.

Obligatory Anachronox jRPG joke is there so...
Only played handful of them - Tactics Ogre LUCT, Jeanne D'Arc, Brandish Dark Revenant, Wizardry TotFL and King's Field 4 Ancient City. Shadow Tower Abyss was fan translated but also pretty easy. You could be lucky to find more than handful of people, still wandering old forums, who played this game. Busin 0 English when?
The one for PSP were good when there was absolute drough in pre-Kickstater times and even longer before Early Access hopes for sell shenaningans.
And yeah, no Dagon Dogma on the list feels weird. Game is a mess but people still play it to this day.

Which one was for PSP? I have a good PSP emulator set up on the phone and I would be down to play a game like that.

Garbage elitist/hipster list that puts obscure games over more popular/mainstream ones just to feel smug/superior. It’s objectively wrong not to have Final Fantasy VII or X in the top 55. There aren’t 55 jrpg’s better than those.

Sengoku Rance at #1 is a pure autism take.

Also no Legend of Mana or Chrono Cross. And finally, no King’s Field is the biggest indicator that this is trash tier.

Fuck objectivity, objectivity is just usually a bunch of dicks trying to manipulate masses into accepting their gay opinion as the one and only.

This is a fair, unfixed vote which everyone had chance to participate in. If you don't accept it you're not accepting what is the actual opinion of the Codex.

This list is terrible.

these should OBJECTIVELY have been in the top 10 whether you like JRPGs or not (I dont). We know Gastrick is a whore and has peasant taste

Chrono Trigger (#51)
Xenogears (#12)
Final Fantasy VII (unranked)
Legend of Mana (unranked)
Vagrant Story (#36)
Kings Field (unranked)
Llylgamyn Saga (unranked)
Final Fantasy Tactics (#28)
Tactics Ogre (#41)
Chrono Cross (unranked)

this is just another trash list like the one felipecuck is making every year

What makes Final Fantasy VI so superior to VII? the way I see it, VI is better in story, feel and music while VII surpasses it mechanically, variety and has a more interesting progression. They're even to me but people give the impression that one is refined and prestigious compared to the other which is casual and brought decline to the world. I can understand the attitude on imageboards where nintendies dominate the conversation but not elsewhere.

And Chrono Trigger is a very good introductory game to the genre. Shouldn't be considered more than that.

I'm surprised that none of the few JRPGs that usually appear in the "Codex's Top RPG" lists are in this one. Like Dark Souls, Dragon's Dogma or Trails in The Sky.

Personally my two top choices would be FF Tactics and Tactics Ogre. Both of them have setting, story and characters vastly superior to the majority of crpg's that are lauded here on the codex, western devs can only dream about making such magnificent caliber of games.

Yasumi Matsuno has been so badly treated by the industry. Didn't even get the pleasure to finish his vision for FFXII.

Rance on the first position is going to do wonders for this site.
Can't be worse than having a top jrpg post on the front page. One that doesn't even seem to make much sense out of what a jrpg is.

By the way, in other jrpg news, Kingdom of Loathing brought back the time twitching tower for a limited time. Technically, they brought it back for a whole week. But that was a week ago and it will be gone again tomorrow.

Nobody knew about or voted in the poll.
It was in the JRPG forum for at least a month and constantly bumped up to the top of the list. The fact that you didn't know about it means you don't visit that forum and thus should not have been voting in the poll.

What makes Final Fantasy VI so superior to VII?

That Codex's hipsters think they look more interesting because they voted for the one that is (supposedly) less popular.

If you think the list is organised around any other criteria such as story, mechanics or how beloved the game is, and not because they look as contrarian as possible, you got it wrong.
