Are ships completely player-manned?

This is a somewhat complicated issue, so I'll be thorough.

There will be NPC ships manned entirely by NPCs—police cruisers, military vessels, civilian freighters, pirates, alien craft from other homeworlds, and so on. Normal player ships can be completely player-manned, from single-seat fighters right up to the Idris Corvette, whose specs currently indicate a max crew of ten. The max crew for the destroyer, frigate, escort carrier, and battlecruiser are unknown, because those ships have yet to be revealed.

I say "can be completely player-manned" because NPC hirelings can be hired to man turrets, and perhaps man other stations as well (unknown). This is in lieu of a human player, though. A human will always be able to take that seat instead.

Finally, very large ships, such as the Bengal carrier, will be able carry hundreds of players. It's presumed/implied that some NPCs will be present to give the appearance of performing "flavor" tasks around these large ships, such as cleaning hallways or performing mundane maintenance, with "actual" stations (bridge consoles, turrets, the launch-able fighters, etc.) being manned by humans.

It has been tentatively confirmed that larger ships will feature stations other than just "pilot" and "turret gunner," perhaps delegating sensors, power management, and shield management (those are just examples) to additional crewmen a la Star Trek.

Boy howdy! Can't wait to become a redshirt in Captain Blaine's top-of-the-line starship! Maybe I'll get to go on an away mission - just me and three of the main characters. What could go wrong!

Pledged a long time ago. Stopped paying attention since. So, any gameplay vids, screenshots or other tangible proofs of this thing coming to fruition out there?

Well, the hangar module's been out for a while now. You can download it, climb inside your ships, and interact with them.

https://robertsspaceindustries.com/hangar-module

In my Constellation, I'm able to:

  • Use the ventral airlock lift to enter and exit the ship. This is fully animated and features full audio (hissing airlock, mechanical noises, etc.).
  • Approach the captain's chair and interact with it, at which point it swivels around hydraulically, my character climbs into it, it swivels into position, and then my character grasps the controls. If I press WASD or use a joystick, my character's hands will move the controls accordingly.
  • Summon the seats for either the upper or the lower turret using their respective control panels, climb into them, and then the seat automatically moves back into position. My character grasps the controls and can manipulate them as above.
  • The turrets themselves emerge (raise or lower) from hatches that open when in use, and close when the turret's not in use. The turrets don't actually swivel around to follow your reticle in the hangar module, though.
  • Lower or raise the lounge table/seat.
  • Open and close the midships hatch.
  • Open and close the shutters on the four bunk beds.
  • Open and close the door to the lavatory.
  • Use (sit on, flush, get up from) the toilet.
  • Use (open/close door, get into and out of) the shower.

At this point, all that's left as far as the interior is actual screens with real game info on the ship's control panels, and real HUD elements. They're placeholders currently.

Edit: Ah, almost forgot the fish tank!

So by Jan 1, 2015 I want a good rig. This looks like so much flight sim incline.

Jan 2015. Just when I've finished my Master's and will be as rich as Blaine. Maybe I will spend my first paycheck on buying eight huge ships on the grey market and backpedal on my sceptimism.

So by Jan 1, 2015 I want a good rig. This looks like so much flight sim incline.

Don't call it a sim unless you want the "IT'S NOT REALISTIC ENOUGH TO WARRANT BEING CALLED A 'SIM'!" autists to crawl out of the woodwork.

If there's anything the two of us should be able to agree on it is that those people should be provoked often for great justice, so call it as sim as often as you can, I say.

Are we even sure it'll have flying yet? They seem to be spending all their time on the FPS part of the game.

Huh, I haven't noticed the option for veteran backers! Will probably convert my 315i, add $50 and get nice Digital Freelancer package in November.

EDIT:::

TBH, Freelancer seems a bit overpowered according to the stats (and very versatile). You can use it as a better version of i315 for exploration (anti-matter engine upgrade) or do some efficient trading (huge upgradable? cargo). And you can probably use it as a nice fighting ship if you upgrade it correctly (additional PC manned turret, 4 hardpoints tier 2, and 2 hardpoints tier 3 - all probably upgradable?). Lots of upgrade slots for engine and other stuff.

Or am I seeing it wrongly Blaine?

Also, I am wondering about its speed (vs other ships). Are there any stats about it?

There's an FPS part of the game? I hoped for dog fighting, mining, finding ancient wrecks and stuff, like in Freelancer.

Oh ho ho, you expected focus? No way, this is a game for real men, it has everything. It's going to be the best single-player MMORPG space sim first person shooter you ever played! :M

Seriously, they have a real problem with feature creep and just generally promising way, way too much, but in a few seconds Blaine will swoop in and tell you Christ is the man to do what's never been done before and why it will all work ;)

The two most worrying things is the feature-creep/promising the world and the real-money shop, which no one really knows much about.
