How many different ways does the man have to say "the PC version will never be compromised in absolutely any way whatsoever" before you're satisfied? That's one giant axe you have to grind, there.

Calm down, blaine. I'm just saying that if they are going to do a console version it'd be better if they did something completely separate from the PC version so we wouldn't be bogged down by the peasants.

Anyway, this thread has been severely lacking in ship porn lately. Anyone got some good screens to share? My old GPU sounded like a jet engine last time I've tried to boot the hangar module.

Edit:

We’re about ready to build the ultimate AMD rig with FOUR R9 290Xs and AMD’s eight core CPU driving a set of 4K monitors in Eyefinity

I'd like to see a measurement of the noise of that setup, it's probably close to a real spaceship.

I'll have to look into this Mantle shit. I've been an Nvidia man for pretty much ever (and with good reason—ATI/AMD have always tended toward more driver conflicts with games, and to update said drivers more slowly), but if the performance boost is significant, it might be time to make a change.

I can't imagine it could be more than 10-20% (maybe 30% at the very outside) compared to equivalent Nvidia hardware and DirectX, but even 10% is significant.

Actually, ATI generally has much more frequent driver updates. They used to have a new one out every single month. They've slowed down from that as AMD is going broke.

From what I gathered about the presentations at their developer summit (which I listened to with half an ear, granted) some of the most significant gains should be when there's a lot of relatively low-poly objects on screen simultaneously (think dense asteroid fields with a large draw distance). That could end up being a very significant FPS increase, also in instances such as when you have large skirmishes in games like Star Citizen. Once the BF4 patch kicks in, it should give some indication about the general performance increase.

I've been itching to get a GTX 780 now that they've dropped in price, but I have to admit the Mantle hype has piqued my interest. It's just a pity the 290/290X cards didn't come with the better manufacturer coolers to begin with, I would've ordered one right away. Asus has said their coolers could take till mid-december, and even that wasn't certain. Some or even all manufacturers might end up getting theirs out only next year.

Yeah, which is why it took them almost 9 months to get a Titan equivalent out the door, which is only very marginally more powerful than the Titan.

Which is why Nvidia was able to continue charging out the ass for the Titan and 780 for almost 9 months, and probably will continue to for a while yet (edit: given Turisas' recent post, perhaps the prices are already dropping, shortly after I got mine of course).

NVIDIA was able to sit on the full GK 110 chip for a year and a half because AMD's hardware just wasn't competitive so I have little faith in future hardware from AMD, plus G-Sync is something I've wanted for years.

Yeah G-Sync is fucking sweet, doubt I'll be upgrading my monitor until 4K ones become affordable. Otherwise I'd definitely be weighing that heavily in my decision.

OTOH, AMD does have TrueAudio, which could end up being neat as well (watch with headphones):

Blaine, I think you should post some more ship porn before the thread is derailed completely.

That's quite nice, is that something devs have to support(like Physx) or is it just the videocard doing its thing?

And here's some ship porn(not my screens):

Star Citizen IS a PC game. It will NEVER be dumbed down for a lesser platform. We will NOT limit the input options or supported peripherals to the lowest common denominator. We will NOT pass on features and technology just because they will only run on some hardware configurations.

Yeah, it's not like they've sold >300k copies even though the game won't be out until 2015...

Here's some more butthurt, courtesy of eurogamer:

Ye gods what a bell-end.

I can't help but laugh at how ridiculously defensive this guy sounds.

Sounds like a proper twat - does nothing but encourage the opinion that PC gamers are elitist assholes.

'lesser platform'

Twat.

And many, many more over here:

Absolutely anyone who denies that consoles are lesser platforms is deluded. Their only inherent advantages over PCs are standardized hardware (which is also a disadvantage), lower upfront purchase price, and (though this isn't always the case nowadays) pop-in-and-play, hassle-free game loading. They also get exclusive AAA games, but that's not an inherent advantage.

Otherwise, they're inferior. They can never be upgraded, their non-gaming functionality is incredibly limited (and aggravatingly proprietary), their entire raison d'etre is as little DRM boxes for publishers and the manufacturer... wait, why the fuck am I explaining this to the Codex?

I haven't harvested this many assruptured consoletard tears since Xbone fans got mad when Sony made MS look like a chump a few months back.

On the NVIDIA vs AMD thing, nowadays it's more like the former provides a more polished and refined experience with additional features (Shadowplay, Geforce Experience, that streaming tech Shield uses, GSYNC) at a premium, while the latter is more about raw performance per cost. In terms of usability, AMD drivers have gotten much better, and now that they figured out how to do multi-gpu setups without Crossfire bridges, their biggest technical hurdle should be overcome.

And NVIDIA has started limiting OC'ing, although there is a rumour floating around that a 780ti wit no TDP/temp cap will be released.
