Flying by instrumentation (Mechjeb and B9 cockpit interior). This time it's a Hohmann burn to Moho

Brave Potatonauts Szurkrarvoska, Hellraisczyk and Roxorowski Darthowicz refuelled and in orbit. Gotta check the phase angles to figure out where theyr'e going, but the PotatoTug Mk III has enough potato gas to go anywhere in the solar system. and Roxorowski's lander should have enough potato gas and thrust to land and return from any celestial body except Eve (way, way thick atmosphere) and Jool (gas giant).

Soon to be first Potato on Duna. Why waste expensive probe on mission when Potatoman cheap? Roxorowski looks thrilled to be situated in the lander.

The lander making its final approach. The hauler is in orbit and has plenty of fuel left for the return flight.

Aerospikes for Duna? Well they're flat and have more thrust than the LV-909 so I guess that's an advantage.

Personally I did this months ago in KSP 18.2 (never updated the LP enough to reach the point of that mission :M):

"Wydma Project" - Manned Duna Exploration Program

kspduna-01.png

Great day for cosmonautics in Polant, launch biggest payload yet on most powerful rocket, it carry Krzelecki Cruiser modular interplanetary mothership into orbit.

kspduna-02.png

Cruiser now in ~140 km circular Low Kerbin Orbit, launch Keweliusz Heavy Dunar Lander on separate rocket and dock with Cruiser. Now have full crew and full capability of complete mission for socialism on Red Planet which is in color of workers revolution.

kspduna-03.png

Get gravity assist from Mun on way out of system, totally not coincidence Mun in way of Cruiser. It all plan by greatest of engineer in socialist fatherland! (I think it gave me like 10 m/s of delta-v)

kspduna-04.png

After 230 day in space cruiser enter stable orbit of Duna-Ike system. Cosmonauts Bonescrapperewicz, Konjad Kucykowski, Storyfagurski, Elwro Kermańczyk and Draco Komisarski now first of Kerbal-kind to see other planet from up close. But this not as close as they can get.

kspduna-05.png

After orbit lowered to 112 kilometer pump fuel to lander, surface team transfer via EVA from crew compartment to less spacious lander. Lander undocks and begins descent.

kspduna-06.png

All cosmonaut fearless as they travel at mere 784 meter per second after parachute start deploy. Such is their faith in socialist engineering that create lander.

kspduna-07.png

During final 100 meter of descent nuclear thermal engine fire and slow lander down to acceptable landing velocity.

kspduna-08.png

Landing success. All cosmonaut alive and well.

kspduna-09.png

Later in mission Weba-1 Duna Rover arrive and autonomously drive 30 kilometer to landing site. Comrade Konjad Kucykowski stay in lander while two other cosmonaut drive to explore maria about 40 kilometer to the east.

Since this was a stock part rover before actual rover wheels were implemented it got stuck in the maria as the ion engines were not powerful enough to climb the not so steep hills. I had RCS installed on it as a booster for such situations but they changed RCS tanks and consumption in the meantime in a patch so it ended up having effectively at least 10% of booster fuel than it had running out too fast to get out. Had to land a bigger rover with more ion engines. Luckily the cosmonauts had enough potato to survive waiting over a year for a new rover. Making rovers is so much easier with actual powered electric wheels.

The Protato Lander was intended as a reusable craft for a variety of mission profiles. Aerospikes have a better thrust/dry mass ratio than LV909s and similar/better fuel consumption.

Case in point. After Roxorowski performed SCIENCE on Duna, he had plenty of fuel for takeoff and rendezvous with the Hauler:

Did I mention the B9 cockpit and laz0r system docking camera are awesome? They are!

Refitting was done in orbit. Parachutes repacked, fuel transferred. And since you questioned the design of the lander, Hellraisczyk and Roxorowski EVA'ed to swap places.

Maneuver nodes are awesome. Also, this is usually the screen I'm staring at in KSP 95% of the time. The fancy exterior shots are mostly for screenshots, docking and landing. And a reward for getting something into orbit.

I was originally going to use Ike to slingshot me out of Dunas sphere of influence for a transfer towards Eve, where I have an orbital refuelling station. But halfway through the maneuvre I realized i've never actually landed something on Ike. So I altered my orbit and sent Hellraisczyk down.

Ikes low gravity makes the reaction control system backpack the most efficient way to get around.

Ikes low gravity means that if you touch down too fast, you just keep tumbling and spinning for several hundred meters. :smug:

You were on a polar orbit and didn't land at either of the poles? For shame. Either way I prefer the LV-N for duna, two are enough to get into orbit and for the added weight you essentially get over twice the delta-v out of the fuel you haul with you.

I forgot to mention but the devs actually recently hired the guy who made the lazor mod, he's not a very talkative person on the dev stream (which became something of a running joke) but he's the guy doing the knowledge database interface for resources/crews and other stuff. Also he said that something he wants to do but is unsure when/if he'll be working on it in the near future is an IVA integrated docking cam. Adding something like a deployable docking monitor to current cockpits wouldn't be that hard I guess.

They also hired another modder recently and she's doing new parts, she made a radially-attached toolbox so it looks like EVA part fixing will be added in the near future. Also I think the high-visibility pod and the smaller lander can were her work. She's doing new buildings for the KSC as well.

I did land at the south pole as well. Just forgot to screenshot it. :P

Also, I didn't know she existed until now but the girl who removed the god damn red tower from the launchpad is my heroine!

[edit]

Can't have a screenshotless post in screenshot thread. The long haul Potato mission has visited Duna (Mars-Analogue) and Ike (Phobos). Instead of returning to Kerbin (Earth), I decided to park them in orbit around Eve (Venus). I have an old unmanned space station there with fuel left over. That should be enough to get the mission to land on Moho (Mercury) and back to Kerbin.

Even if Hellraiser undoubtedly thinks I should've done a bunch of tweaks, I'm still pretty content with this mission. with just one refueling stop I managed to visit 4 planets (landing on two of them) and 3 moons (landing on all of them).

Also, reentry effects during aerobreaking please my inner graphicswhore.

She didn't remove the tower as it was removed in the dev build like a week before she got hired IIRC. She's probably going to do a new VAB, SPH or tracking station model to match the new launch pad and runway. Or maybe she's doing stuff like random cabins in the woods or cities we'll be able to crash into. They only said she's doing buildings now, not specified which.

And yes, fuck that red tower. So many strap-on boosters on my really big rockets crashed into that. Although now I run into the problem that the new launch pad is too small for some things. Such are the woes of adding moar rocket to your rocket :M

Finally did something I've been wanting for a long time: Backup my PS1 & PS2 saves from the memmory cards into the PC. Sadly one of the PS1 cards did not survive almost 17 years (oh god, I'm so old) and collapsed, taking some of my beated games with it...

Still, among my findings was this:

:hmmm:

142 hours of Samurai Warriors 2.... what REALLY scares me is that I'm sure I've played Dynasty Warriors 4 waaaaay more than SW2... sadly, it doens't record playtime.

Yeah, Wolfenstein 2009. Almost done with it.
I just saw the mook plans and imagined that there was no way a modern grimdark shooter have a funny thing like that.:P I'm curious now, it is worth a full playthrough or just get boring halfway through?

I wrote about it in the what are you playing thread. It's got a lot of popamole to it but the wacky weapons, fun enemies and unique atmosphere keep me playing. Most modern shooters bury themselves in seriousness and realism and shit but this one likes to have fun.

If you procure it make sure you fix the mouse in the ini.
