Call of Left 4 Resident Evil The Mercenaries 6
Truly abhorrent. The boss who spends the entire fight moaning and jizzing on herself and periodically breaking into a striptease was bretty gud though.
And now for another shitty Resident Evil game:
Resident Evil Archives: Resident Evil ZERO (Wii port of the gamecube original, played on latest Dolphin revision)
Sorry for the low quality of the screens - this is a common issue with PS2 and gnomecube games that use a rudimentary form of motion blur. It's typically not an issue in-game, depending on the title (I had to disable it on a few PS2 games back in the day).
Anyway, it's definitely one to miss. I'm unclear on why it uses this weird pseudo-SP-co-op mechanic, which could've been worse but is frequently frustrating due to retarded AI and a fiddly item system. The game was originally intended for the Nintendo 64 back in the late 90s/early 00s, curiously enough:
Production was eventually restarted for release on the gamecube and ZERO was farted out around 2002-ish (REmake's original release). A lot of the zombie models in the game looked somewhat similar to REmake's to my untrained eye, so perhaps it was yet another capcom title that took advantage of the production pipeline of that game (if you want to try and get youself institutionalized, try spotting all the reused files and content from REmake in Capcom games from the early-to-mid 00s). Anyway, I won't bore anyone with a history lesson (you can google or watch some youtube videos on the subject, such as:
), but it's interesting to note that since this was one of the last games using the "original" Resident Evil storyline (i.e. before RE4 was twisted through hell and back and we ended up with the Ganado/parasite nonsense) so there are numerous story hooks building up Oswell Spencer as the overarching villain of the series and the importance of the "Progenitor Virus" (which, in early drafts, Leon was originally meant to be investigating - and would be infected by - when he travels to Europe for RE4.
From a gameplay perspective, I thought it struck a poor balance between intelligent resource management and forced action. One of the things I liked about REmake was that there were often multiple entries and exits to various areas (at least in the mansion), so it was often worthwhile taking an extremely lengthy route round the mansion to enter a room via a different doorway, which would make it much easier to avoid enemies who were positioned closer to another entry or blocked narrow corridors. Whilst there were times that clearing out an area was vitally important (especially since you would revisit it and face new enemies like Hunters and Crimson Heads later on), you saw enough benefit from trying to conserve ammo and choose flight over fight that it was an option you'd generally keep in mind, rather than blasting away the instant you entered a room. With REZero there were too many enemies in too many cramped spaces for this to be viable. In 99% of situations, the ideal approach to ZERO is to methodically clear out each and every room using the safest and most frugal methods available - pistol rounds and molotovs for zombies, shotguns and grenade launchers for everything else - and ensure you have around 8-12 shotgun, launcher or magnum rounds for any bosses. There were a few situations were running like hell was necessary but they were very rare and in hindsight, most of the game should be dealth with Terminator-style. There were also some really counter-intuitive situations where you were blocked from using certain items for no clear reason (the hookshot being a great example). I regret having played through without cheats to be honest, but I was curious as to how the mechanics would stack up against REmake. So at least there's that. The only "traditional" RE title I've yet to play is Code Veronica.
tl;dr: My advice on Resident Evil ZEROis to skip it. If you're curious about vanilla RE gameplay then get REmake. Side note: I had quite a bit of emulator trouble with crashes and such. Using savestates also makes the game almost unplayable, with screeching sound and a broken framerate, so I would recommend using them only as backup for crashes. The Gamecube version probably runs better on dolphin.
