You don't have to use Assault Rifles, but refusing to use them from a misplaced sense of superiority is retarded as fuck. Just play the game how you want to play it. Nobody cares.

Whatever you do don't let VAX stay behind your people. Go to Abandoned Railway early to get him then just leave and forget the robots unless you want XP.

Hey Zombra I am trying to do a no-reload run. Maybe my advice is not welcome for save scumming but if you go there early you would die if you fought.
