That's second time playing the game, hardest difficulity, and I don't even know what let me win that early. Suffice it to say that the game is a complete joke on pretty much every level. It fails at gameplay, it fails at writing, it fails at atmosphere, it fails at challenge, it fails at being high production values(dat gui) and it fails at being fun.

Which game has the decent gameplay , writing, atmpshere and chalenge nowadays?
If you're looking for a 4x game? I'm afraid I don't have one. But general strategy there's xenonauts and if you don't care about genre there's dark souls amongst others.

I thought "we looked Alpha Centauri up on wikipedia as research" was just them putting their foot in their mouth, but it really feels like that is the limit of how acquainted with it they were.
Did they say that? Do you have a link on that?

It was proudly trumpeted in several interviews, but it's also on the wikipedia page for Beyond Earth:

In designing the tech web, the Beyond Earth team began by going to the Wikipedia article on Alpha Centauri, as well as reading books the article listed as sources of inspiration for Alpha Centauri designer Brian Reynolds.[8]

Try Endless Legend. The writing is superb (PST level for a 4X, I'm not kidding), the gameplay is refreshing and innovative, atmosphere is awesome and unique, challenge wise I got two war declarations from neighbours because their sticks were pointier than mine and one stole my assimilated village while the other destroyed my capital.

And the best thing of the game is it has one of the best soundtrack evah.

Stop wasting your time and talent with this mobile shite Brian.

No chance ,he is lost.Listened him talk couple of times, zero passion and is still in game development only coz it pay the bills.

I don't blame such people, modern game development squeezes the enthusiasm out of people. Why would he want to put up with that shit when he could make bank not trying very hard?

it seems they forgot to actually try and play the game in all their enthusiasm to read about it.

on that note, comments here convinced me i was right in my first impression 2 months ago. maybe i will give it a try if expansions improve it greatly.

Hmm I don't know, their recent patch note didn't specifically mention "Fixed AI not willing to attack" but it did mention a lot things fixing AI, including "attacking armies".

I must say that I completely neglected defense in my last game because I have already heard that the AI is supposed to be quite passive, and then their sudden attack completely surprised me.

Oh, I forgot to mention that my hero with two marines got attacked by an cold-war empire in some neutral region - once again, completely unexpected - and I was forced to run away because the enemy hero (the Necrophage one) was super tough.

They tried to make a spiritual successor to Alpha Centauri by looking it up on Wikipedia? :retarded:

:negative:
:dead:

Big surprise that they failed to recapture the magic.
I understand now.
It's not that I am incredibly intelligent (though I often like to think so...), it's the rest of the world that's filled with incredible idiots.

So....the real question is.....is this game worth leeching? Would you play it again if it was free?

Well tech web looks original. It's just the rest of the game that's disaster because it was copied from Civ V.

Fuck no, absolutely not, just no. This game is absolutely, utterly bland. I'm not even that much into strategy games, but Alpha Centauri made me lose months worth of sleep thanks to its setting and characters. This shite? Leaders don't have any personality to speak of and the setting is as deep as a puddle of piss in some gay bar's darkroom. Wait, no, the puddle of piss has to have some story behind it. BE is as generic as it gets. after, like, 20 hours, I still can't find anything that can convince me this isn't an overpriced mod for Civ V. The gameplay feels tedious and I didn't feel like I accomplished anything. Tech web does sound interesting, but it doesn't really make sense. Nanorobotics without computing? What the hell? Just play SMAC if you want Civ in space, seriously.

The saddest thing? I didn't even expect anything nearly as good as SMAC and yet they managed to disappoint me. I'd kill for a proper SMAC sequel ;_;

What a novel concept, someone on the Codex playing a game they don't like for a really long time and then admitting to it in the midst of a rant. You're like Winston in 1984, when he meets that hooker who smells like dead insects and cheap perfume and is old, toothless. She disgusts you, but you screw her all the same. At least she's human — granted, that's where this analogy falls apart. Beyond Earth isn't human, it is sterile party pornography. So then, what is the whore? Wasteland 2.

God, you're right. I'm so desperate I played the game I loathe. I wanted to find one redeemable thing about BE, but I just couldn't find it. The sad thing is, even if they make expansions and patches and shit, this probably won't solve my biggest bone with BE (and modern games in general) - the utter lack of soul.

Well im enjoying this game, and besides crpgs im playing strategies for years. It has great potential , fine mechanics, great music and sound, it can suck you into "one more turn..." state of mind and it is way better than Alpha Centauri - you just talk about your memories here. Maybe you should wait for some expansions and mods, not to mention patches [real problem is multiplayer stability now]. In Civilization 1 or Master of Magic leaders have almost no personality too, but you were young then and had ability to have fun from gaming, not only such grim and critic "pro" attitude.
It gets too much criticism, similar as Civ 5 or Civ 4 or Civ 3 when they was released [not to mention Call to Power hahaha], i remeber the day of AC release too, and it gets some hate as well. Endless legend and Endless space [with Disharmony] are great titles too, full of small flaws but great in the end. So im leaving You with your hate and pain and going back to playing.
We live in golden times of startegy and crpg gaming, after years of shit we get at least some decent titles to play on instead of playing only classics for a dead end so stfu and have fun.

Generally speaking I weight criticism coming from someone who played a game longer than than a few hours more than I do someone who looked at a screenshot five months ago and decided the wheels were too blocky, shit game shit developer shit computer I would rather spend my allowance on Poptarts than this shitty shit shit.

And it is a known fact that exposing oneself to "Banal. Shit. Boring." for too long can drive one completely and utterly insane. Just look at most Cosplayers.

With strategy games you need to sink a bit of time to really know, and even a bad strategy game game can provide some entertainment while you learn it's systems (until you realise how broken they are). I played Stardrive and Endless Space for longer than that but both are bad.
