A good way would be to use the PC's Fame/Infamy (which are present in Skyrim but unlike Oblivion it's only viewable with a console command, for whatever reason).

I also got attacked in Ivarstead straight after meeting Graybeards. It got me thinking how did the cultists wearing freaky masks ask for directions?:S

Cultist: "Hello. We are looking for this guy that goes around doing favors for strangers."

NPC: "Oh, last time I saw him he was walking towards Ivarstead. By the way, fancy robes. Are you wizards or something?"

Proficient, Logical, Efficient and much better done than Tribunal DB attacks. :incline:

God. I did a recent MW playthrough and 10 minutes into a new game I rest, then get attacked by DB assassins. It couldn't have been 100 meters outside Seyda Neen.

They didn't: they turned on their quest compass and fast traveled.

You get fame/infamy points for joining Guilds and completing quests mentioned by Guards? How Skyrim can be called RPG where there's no single place where you can view your gear, stats, skills and attributes? Even DAO had this one... OK quiting RPG Codex for today all those one Avatar fit for all make me feel like discussing with myself. Curse be DU Sheograth and his Mad Schemes.

I actually found that just as dumb, considering then you have to walk around for the rest of the game and hear the guards talk about how you're part of the college.

It's still not as retarded as dozens of guards saying 'hail Sithis' to you after joining the DB.

You have option to destroy the Brotherhood this time; shame I can't just day F... off! to Thieves Guild recruiter nor send the Guards down there to wipe them out as Legion Legate or Stormcloak Stormblade; there should be dialogue I am Dragonborn and came here for Books +Mbut Bethpizda is on one hand too lazy to code more options and on the other hand they just can't imagine someone who don't want to be AWESOME and MAJESTIC Leader of all Guilds in one playthrou.

They design their expansions as being added to an already lengthy playthrough, which is shortsighted of them. It would only take a couple minor changes to make them work better on a new playthrough, but Bethesda seem resistant to giving a shit.
Yes. They also designed Skyrim to be fully completed on one character. That's why a part of the Gauldur Amulet is locked away in a College of Winterhold-dungeon, why you are forced to join the College to complete the Main Quest without metagaming(!), why you're forced to join almost every faction to find all the gems of Barenziah...

I have no idea why they do it. I understand being kid-friendly and making it possible to do everything on one character, but locking away stuff which forces you to join factions in order to complete stuff unrelated to said faction? That's just retarded.

It's not kid-friendly, just tard-friendly. My 10 year old nephew started playing it recently and he saw no problem in creating another character to follow a different guild questline. I told him it wasn't needed, that he could just level the necessary skills...but he ended up making a new character anyway. Some hope for the future of games, I guess.

Fun fact: he's so fucking terrified of the hagravens, he looked up the console commands to know how to instantly kill them if they show up. I think he's avoiding finishing the Companions questline because the cure to lycantrophy involves attacking a coven, and he wanted to try playing as a vampire.

I mean I'm not really saying it was the best way to handle it but someone sat down and said they should have that roleplaying option, and that's nice.

Bethesda from Oblivious on has been about baby steps back to where they were for me. Each game, Oblivion to Fallout 3 to Skyrim, has taken some baby steps back toward better game mechanics and RPGing. In Skyrim we have character decisions that specialize you, the ability to choose between legion and rebels, the ability to destroy the dark brotherhood instead of join them, the ability to tell the mages you don't know shit about magic, etc...

Baby steps. Hopefully Fallout 4 is another improvement.

I bought Skyrim recently. After 4 years of playing no RPGs I was constantly plagued in my mind of how awesome Skyrim and its freedom of choice and character builds would be. My imagination gone wild with thoughts like:

"OMG - I ignore main story, but join exotic/weird factions like Necromancers or the Thalmore"
"OMG - I will build a character that totally builds on fast regeneration of Stamina or Magicka"
"OMG - I wanna try all these special builds!"

- The Rock (smashing down without weapons but only shields and heavy armor, until opponents yield for giving up)
- The Pacifist (just trying to progress as much as possible without killing anyone)
- The Puppet Master (conjure your own army of undead, conjure your weapons)

Here is my experience:
So I started leveling my first build and eventually found out that the build is useless because it was dependent on fast Stamina regeneration. I bought lots of Stamina regeneration items, only to find out that stamina regenerates slower in combat than outside combat. It's ridiculous. Then I found out that the same rules apply to Magicka regeneration. After googling, it looks like this is on purpose, however this killed my ambitions for most of the builds.

The "smashing down with shields" worked but there was another fun killer: once the enemy kneeled on the floor yelling "It's enough I give up!" he stood up again after a few seconds and re-attacked me. I expected him to flee, and maybe come back with enforcements - but naaw... he just kept pointlessly attacking (1 hit away from deadly blow). This made NPCs totally soulless and stupid. Even in Oblivion bandits sometimes fled instead of attacking again!!!

Now if that wasn't enough I tried my luck in joining exotic factions like Necromancers or Thalmore. Unfortunately there is no possibility. What a disappointment. In desperate mood then I started the main quest killing the first dragon - and got turned off by how lame it was. The setup and NPC talking "ooohh, he's the dragonborn oooohh he has dragon blood" almost made me puke.

Conclusion: I am disappointed and agree that even Oblivion was kinda better (especially in character behavior). Instead of building a giant soulless world Bethesda should rather fill their games with meaningful characters and behavior, reasonable enchantments, and fully implemented exotic factions. But all they did were mouth watering hints with no actual implementation. And besides: Steam is a total piece of shit.

Agreed, I should have read this topic, even though it has 160 pages it would have been worth. Damn I was blinded by statements in the past like "Similar to oblivion, but with all all issues, bugs, weirdnesses fixed and everything else enhanced to a perfect state", as well as some Lets Plays showing "how awesome" it was, and where I couldn't see the details. I even recall the issue with regeneration in combat being already in Oblivion (but I've simply forgotten though the years).

Maybe this game is good for only 1 mode: the kill-everyone-and-everything-mode, hopefully starting with the Jarl of Whiterun and not limitations which prevent me from killing Quest-Characters. Edit: nah, even that is not possible. Whatever, time to suck it up and learn for next time. Maybe some mods can help out a bit.

You can RP the Warrior, Mage and Rogue type; the Stormdick or Imperial and Badie/Good Guy the game was somewhat improve over total blandness of Cyrodil turned into Southern England and Bandits in Glass Armour with toned down level scalling and Skyrim being more into Imperial Guide Volume 1 but its still Good Quality Hike Simulator when you rape it with tons of mods; If you want to play real RP pick Drakensang River of Time its only real AA Medieval like RPG released in last 3 years... and there's Fallout New Vegas if you can stomach ugly and buggy Gamebryo engine. There're also indies like Knights of the Chalice too but they're more games for combat-fags.

So I finally embraced the popamole and got TEH GREATEST PC GAEM IN HUMAN HISTORY. Now with DRAGONS!!!!! I didn't want to take a few months off work to read the entire megathread so most or all of what I'm about to say might have been posted before.

It's worse than Oblivion in nearly, but not completely every way. With all the insane hype and reviews, I did expect a disappointment. But this is literally just Oblivion with better graphics, a much better designed world and massively dumbed down to the point of not being an ARPG anymore. In other words: MAJESTIC. If you consider it an adventure game it makes more sense. Also the dumbest interface in recent gaming history. Also also, destruction magic is so overpowered (or weapons underpowered), it makes weapons essentially pointless. I'm just running around like a Sith lord electrocuting everything from bandits to dragons or frying them with my palm-mounted jet engines. I haven't got that far in, only just got the quest to go to Riften for the first time, but I have a question.

What the FUCK is wrong with giants in this game?? They are comically buggy. They always instakill me on the first hit (which might be reasonable, they are giants after all) but they also send me flying a few hundred meters in the air every time. What's up with that?

So, since I've only played Oblivion before, I'm considering starting from Arena and finishing the first 3, or should I not waste my time and just go for Morrowind, the Kodex Konsensus seems to be that it's the best one in the series.

It's not a bug, it's a feature!

...

Seriously. It's the way how damage works: the more overkill damage is dealt the farther you are knocked back. And since Giants do a LOT of damage aimed downwards, the physics engine acts up and turns you into Viking Buzz Aldrin.
