I bought Skyrim recently. After 4 years of playing no RPGs I was constantly plagued in my mind of how awesome Skyrim and its freedom of choice and character builds would be. My imagination gone wild with thoughts like:
"OMG - I ignore main story, but join exotic/weird factions like Necromancers or the Thalmore"
"OMG - I will build a character that totally builds on fast regeneration of Stamina or Magicka"
"OMG - I wanna try all these special builds!"
- The Rock (smashing down without weapons but only shields and heavy armor, until opponents yield for giving up)
- The Pacifist (just trying to progress as much as possible without killing anyone)
- The Puppet Master (conjure your own army of undead, conjure your weapons)
Here is my experience:
So I started leveling my first build and eventually found out that the build is useless because it was dependent on fast Stamina regeneration. I bought lots of Stamina regeneration items, only to find out that stamina regenerates slower in combat than outside combat. It's ridiculous. Then I found out that the same rules apply to Magicka regeneration. After googling, it looks like this is on purpose, however this killed my ambitions for most of the builds.
The "smashing down with shields" worked but there was another fun killer: once the enemy kneeled on the floor yelling "It's enough I give up!" he stood up again after a few seconds and re-attacked me. I expected him to flee, and maybe come back with enforcements - but naaw... he just kept pointlessly attacking (1 hit away from deadly blow). This made NPCs totally soulless and stupid. Even in Oblivion bandits sometimes fled instead of attacking again!!!
Now if that wasn't enough I tried my luck in joining exotic factions like Necromancers or Thalmore. Unfortunately there is no possibility. What a disappointment. In desperate mood then I started the main quest killing the first dragon - and got turned off by how lame it was. The setup and NPC talking "ooohh, he's the dragonborn oooohh he has dragon blood" almost made me puke.
Conclusion: I am disappointed and agree that even Oblivion was kinda better (especially in character behavior). Instead of building a giant soulless world Bethesda should rather fill their games with meaningful characters and behavior, reasonable enchantments, and fully implemented exotic factions. But all they did were mouth watering hints with no actual implementation. And besides: Steam is a total piece of shit.
