It was a masterpiece. I haven't played a game that got me glued to the computer like POE had in years. Not only does it have a great story, dark setting, great character customization but it was also gorgeous to look at. A real treat for RPG fans.

Not edgy enough. You have to play through the game several times and invest hundreds of hours to find miniscule BS to nitpick and then you will earn Codex respect.

Somewhere between the two most positive alternatives I'd say... I'm going to go with option 1 just for spite :smug:

No, you needn't do that. All you have to do is compare POE with your dream RPG (the best combat you can imagine, the story you would love, C&C that would be impossible to code, the setting you dream of etc) and then bitch about how it fell short of that. Totally surprising (and that's not even considering the modest budget the game had).

I got bored and quit just as I reached Caed Nua, after having done most of the first town. Does it improve? I was playing on Hard, as a Wizard.

A solid game definitely, but a masterpiece? That's stretching it a bit. Worst parts included the incredibly weak 3rd act, an overarching narrative that had no real theme driving it, some badly designed encounters, and a few very weak companions.

Overall it is a great game, but I expect the sequel to really weed out what went wrong and build upon it nicely. Hopefully. :negative:

I was forcing myself to play but finally stopped 2/3 or so through the second act (playing on potd). Never looked back, had urges to play again or even remembered the game at all, it isn't a bad game, just entirely unmemorable, soulless and boring to the boot.

It isn't bad from a technical point of view, everything is rather well done.

What didn't you like about it?

Writing (except stuff written by MCA), gameplay, combat, itemization, lack of interesting exploration and little details that add flavor to the world. The SJW elements also felt kinda forced and annoying.

It would have been an average RPG in 1998. It is a very good RPG in 2015. Make of it what you will.

Here is a short analysis I wrote after I finished the game.

How can anyone say that PoE writing is boring is beyond me. I consider myself quite picky when it comes to writing, yet PoE (if we don't count backers stuff) managed to meet my standards. Maybe you people just don't like to read?

Mechanically, the game isn't without issues but the amount of flak it gets here for absolutely no reason is absurd. Of course the Codex hates everything but this goes far beyond the usual "the game is shit, what should I play and hate next?" chatter.
because the writing is legitimately shit, maybe your standards aren't as high as you would like to believe
maybe you are a dirty peasant
maybe you're used to reading comic books like a little child so that you get overwhelmed by the impressive pages upon pages of letters and the fact that they say nothing eludes you

That is how I feel about it as well. Compared to your Skyrims, Fallout 3s and Dragon Age Inquisitions it is a great game. Unfortunately the bar is so low now even an average RPG is great.

It had its flaws, but I liked it and am open for kickstarting a sequel in the future.
My feelings exactly. The groundwork is there for something great, hopefully Obsidian realizes it and does something with what they have.

So, it is a flawed, but GOOD game. Not as good as the IE games, but it is good on its own right.

Coming from J_C.. that basically means it's a piece of shit.

It's amazing what people will rationalize to themselves.

"Well if this game came out 15 years ago it would suck.. but this is the best it's gonna get *continues licking the dirty turd sawyer left on his porch - while everyone else funds D:OS II*

I'm pretty sure Classic Codex would have enjoyed PoE far more than BG.

Less than Torment and Fallout of course.
