Saint's Row has always been bad

No - Saint's Row started off as a GTA knockoff, but has evolved essentially into what GTA should have been: Fun. Saint's Row 2 came out about the same time as GTA IV - which game would you rather play?

SR kept going over the top, adding more and more, while GTA focused all their energy on making a better driving simulator. I don't care for for all the inside jokes and all the goofiness in SR - but overall it is a competent sandbox. GTA had a lot of promise after San Andreas. Then the GTA franchise just declined. While GTA IV may be someone's cup of tea, it was a crashing bore as a GTA game.

They could have just gone in the same direction, using the same characters, or let you play as a faction - or choose your faction with the same city or a different city. For SR 3 & 4 it was essentially the same map. Lots of different things they could have done. Instead, they do a 180 degree (happy now?) turn to the left. Who would buy this?

Saints Row 2 cranks the wacky bullshit up quite a bit, which can result in you doing a mission that ends with an emotional cutscene in which you performing a mercy kill on one of your mangled homies... only to hop into a septic truck and spray shit on people's houses to drive down real estate value in the next.

Saints Row 2's three main stories are all consistent in tone within themselves (Sons is comedic all the way, Brotherhood is serious with some very dark humor, Ronin is plain dark). The "problem" is you can freely hop between each of the three stories and into side missions.

And frankly septic avenger's whackyness is overplayed. It's one side mission when the rest of them are all relatively serious.

I guess septic aventer isn't so whacky after all...

GTA IV is the peak of the open world mayhem genre so that. The Saint's Row series is boring because it is so detached. Since GTA IV is so realistic it's fun just to jump out of a car mid-drive and see the ragdolling and procedural animations combine to make it seem real. Everything has a weight to it and when you do cause mayor mayhem it feels good. SR is yawn inducing since it doesn't take itself seriously enough for you to care about anything and the game world is very toy like, getting into a car chase isn't nearly as much fun and the world itself is just a cardboard cutout backdrop.

I agree! ^ But I also feel the same about GTA games. Buying pizza and playing virtual golf and stuff is just meaningless minigame fluff. I hate that they waste so many resources on that shit. What I think 99% of gamers would prefer (whether they know it or not) would be to spend a fraction of that budget on hiring a single Raph Koster type to turn the world into a fascinating place with some real depth, mostly by filling a database.

Until Open World games figure that out, which I doubt will be in my lifetime, they are all pretty worthless to me, minor distractions at best. Also the graphics in this suck, it looks like Simpsons Hit & Run.

IMO of all the open world games, Red Faction Guerrilla came closest to achieving that, since there was inter-factional fights and every building could be explored. Every set piece was meaningfully designed so you could really make use of the environment by planning your points of attack or just equip the thermonuke and go ballistic. The point is, of all open-world games I've played (Just Cause, Saints Row, GTA, Sleeping Dogs), RFG was is only one that encourages you to utilise as much of what you can see as possible, which is the environment laid out before you.

No it isn't. I knew GTA IV sucked for "open world mayhem" when they went to all the trouble of making that highly detailed roller coaster and ... it was window dressing. You can't blow it up, or drive a car on it. Yah, the world looks real, the car drives really real, but that's not fun. Jumping out of a car to see cool ragdoll physics isn't fun nor is it mayhem. Quite the opposite. If I wanted a driving simulator, I'd play a driving simulator. GTA IV stripped away quite a bit of fun in favor of graphics. I'd honestly rather play GTA III than GTA IV, and I don't think I'm in the minority.

If you think this you should consider playing the first Saint's Row. Unlike the latter games it had a better balance between wacky and realistic. Also, you got a better feel for your gang in the first game, and even slightly gave a fuck about some of them. Unfortunately, the first game was never released on the PC and remained an Xbox 360 exclusive. But, you can still play the game if you can run an Xbox 360 emulator on your rig (haven't tried it myself 'cause I still have my 360).

The first game is an underrated gem, IMO.
