Just trying to figure out how you ran into 50 hobgoblins at lvl 1.

You'd need the much higher level hold monsters for that.

Sleep can work on one ogre though, which is a totally worthwhile use of that spell. Be careful how you aim.

The cheese strategy is to move someone onto the troll's spot so he can't get back up again.

It is unavoidable damage. It is helpful, especially at high levels, as it doesn't have a cap, IIRC.

The most powerful spell in the game, and works quite well on Trolls.
And as someone else mentioned, try to Sleep one of the Ogres.
You can also use Hirelings. The lvl 4 Hero is a good front fighter.

While search is active, time passes much more rapidly, as I recall. This means that before you clear an area, it means you're more likely to get random encounters. I don't recall if there are other effects.

In PoR with a set amount of semi-random encounters on each map, it means the random encounters will be concentrated at the start of the map.

Buffing spells expire quicker. Not very relevant in PoR, though, but at higher levels Enlarge will give you STR 23 for several hours.

Poison isn't really instant death. It just looks that way.
Use Neutralize Potion. Unless you have scrolls, you'll have to go to a Temple for that. But remember to turn off Search, for if you take too long time the character will be really dead. You can use Slow Poison to increase the time.
