I wonder how a really minimalistic difficulty mod for STALKER would work out:

  • All bleeding is amplified and doesn't stop over time unless below a very low threshold
  • No consumables restore health.
  • Medkits and bandages only stop bleeding, but each type only works below certain bleeding threshold/above certain health threshold
  • Health doesn't regenerate unless above certain threshold (say 75%)
  • Artifact assisted regeneration has thresholds as well (lower for higher grade artifacts, say 25% for Soul, 50% for chunk of meat in SoC)
  • Restoring non-regenerating health only possible by visiting an NPC (like CoP doctors), maybe add a rare and expensive artifact that can heal you fully but is consumed in the process.
And that's all - no bullshit gameplay tweaks, apart from some harsher economy (but not at 2M$ for a shit sandwich, also selectively for higher end stuff) and (in CoP) higher anomaly damage.
NPC grenades (in SoC) and grenades scaled up to SoC level (in CoP) would be nice though, same with poor armor penetration for pistol rounds.

Frankly, after a hundred hours on Misery (1 and 2) Im tired of difficulty mods, specially when they translate to frustration by forcing you to save at every step and click reload a million times.

What I wish is for the game to take the next step in survival-simulation and have full permadeath / no reload option. Maybe its too much of a culture shock and would require a new game from scratch. Perhaps in a true Stalker 2 sequel or something. Make it so you could be rescued by friendly stalkers if dying within certain radius from bases but permadie while on the wilds or underground facilities, and perhaps allowing you to train a young stalker pupil to heir your stashes when you die and keep on playing with this new character. AKA: Crusader Kings 2 in the Zone of Alienation on a first-person POV and with faction-mates instead of a court to fuck/help/teach/learn/rob/kill/party/etc.

That's the only big issue I have with CoP. Difficulty mods are almost mandatory for a second playthrough. The way vanilla is set up, with the pre-set loot locations (that appear even if you're not given the location as a quest reward) and the anomaly locations that regularly spew high-reward artifacts makes it too easy to game the system early on. Mods that at least change the types of loot you can get (so no high-level STALKER suit and mid-level NATO weapons for you in the first five hours!) at the very least are required to keep some semblance of difficulty.

Just started Misery 2.1.1 and to all you crackheads that say it's much more difficult, YOU'RE WRONG!

I'm playing Assaulter class on Misery mode and bullets never miss their mark. In Complete (which EVERYBODY claims is easier than vanilla) on Veteran difficulty, the percent to hit target was like 1/10. It seemed like I was shooting from one of those trumpet-looking muskets from the 1700's. Plus the zone seems much emptier.

I'll update my opinion when I beat it.

I havent beaten any of the stalker games, but they are always on my pc. They are the very anithesis of popamole, every new game works out different, every assault on an enemy location is somewhat unique...i could play the first 1/4 over and over and it would be like different levels of any other shooter. This is one of those i dont mind reloading saves all the time, or just going somewhere else. i almost never get "stuck" i just usually last for 10 hours before dipping back into a point-and-click or storyfag rpg.

It took me several years before I beat Chernobyl. I would install and it would be too tough and then I wouldn't touch it again for a long time. Best open-ended FPS's I've ever played.

Yeah, I found CoP to be the easiest of the Stalkers.
You can find high level gear early on, and there aren't that many hostiles.

Finished Misery1. My impression copypasted from notepad file on desktop.

If the Misery1 were CoP vanilia, then it would be p.cool.
Occasional retartation of AI. It happened when you rescue stalker in Jupiter from bandit and (worst) have to go through tunnels to Pripyat.
I was forced to restart the game few times on that mission because teammates stuck in combat behavior and run around like a morans.
And One Shot mission in Pripyat, first - got delay after cutscene (happened in one or two mods before, no idea what cause this), then client didn't came.
Range of melee attacks is artificaly increased. You're out of the mutant's reach and still die. Same thing happen in Misery2.
Second - I got two cases, when loading the game during fight (because I was smeared on the wall by Zombie FirePlatoon) cover all screen with fog.
Despite blatant lies of modders about enhanced AI - enemies can see me through the fog. Restarting and reloading the game doen't remove the fog.
Oh and you can't sleep for 1h to change the weather.
What I really liked is that the AP ammo destroy anything armored. It was pleasure to taking down mercs and monoliths with SKS + AP. Except zombies, they fit
to the rumbling of the people, who argue about packing bunch of AP ammo in the head.
EDIT: apparently weather change after few reloads. It started working after reaching Pripyat but not Zaton&Jupiter. Hm.

Artefacts prices are lower, but you must remember that there's no fuckton of items to spend money like in Misery2.

Last mission with bunch of AI under our escort, was helluva annoying with constant AI retardation.
Dozen of game restarts, reloadings, and few cups of some coffeine. Finally it's behind me...

Ah, and I'm testing L.E.G.E.N.D.A.R.Y. mod for ShoC.
Pros: ton of guns (similiar to StalkerSoup), it may be the mod with biggest arsenal. Enemies are no bullet sponges.
Cons: enemies pointing at you even when you're behind the wall, they'll always know where you are if you dare to make a noise.
There's problem in Kordon, in the rookies village, when military patrol walk in the road near the outpost. Stalkers go apeshit and approach the outpost. Every. Fucking. Time. That's why I was forced to do first mission (getting flash from ATP/carpark) alone, because my team went somewhere else. And when I run away from the south outpost I was shot in the back by soldat that respawned behind me. How delightful.
EDIT oh boy, it's even more insane. I was taking a nap on the car park/ATP for 5h. Awaken by emission, but there was something else. The NPCs around were different. What a surprise! That was a band of Duty and Ecologists. Duty. In. The. Cordon. Seriously. Oh and ATP was assaulted by 10 zombies, 5 pseudodogs and 5 himeras. They don't take that much but if you fail the dodge from their jump - game over.

Is there such a thing as a reference mod/patch guide (for SoC)?

I tried Complete a few years back but run into a game stopping bug and couldn't be arsed replaying those 10hrs I lost.

Yeah, that's what you got for listening people recommending you Complete. it blow my mind this crap is highly praised and recommended everywhere while real fixes are nowhere to point out.

If you have retail SHoC - check the required version of the game, mods ofter ask for 1.0004

SHoC need Zone Restoration Project.
Clear Sky need Sky Reclamation Project.
Call of Pripyat need nothing because is't aleady perfect and free from bug stopping progress.

Hey, someone knows if Autumn Aurora 2.04 and 2.1 are savegame-compatible?

I started a game on 2.04 a while back, but never finished it. In the meanwhile 2.1 came out and I'm in the mood for some STALKER again, so I wondered whether it would make sense to upgrade.

Hey, someone knows if Autumn Aurora 2.04 and 2.1 are savegame-compatible?

I started a game on 2.04 a while back, but never finished it. In the meanwhile 2.1 came out and I'm in the mood for some STALKER again, so I wondered whether it would make sense to upgrade.

Not sure about save compatibility, but AA 2.1 has a frustrating issue with taking too many missions and corrupting your savegames.

The installer warns you about this bug, but the threshold is quite low. I've had save games corrupted by taking as few as 10 missions.

Anyway, if so it would be a reason to stay at 2.04, I guess.
Doesn't help much that I can't find a changelog anywhere.

Played ShoC with Autumn Aurora. It looks pretty and the gun porn in absolutely marvelous to the point where I had to make a serious effort to resist the temptation of trying to lick my abakan through the screen.

But.

Whoever was behind the new NPC outfits deserves to be hanged, drawn and quartered. I laughed at what they did to Wolf and at the skull masks on Duty troops, but tacticool mercs and whatever ungodly abomination the Freedom gate guard is supposed to be wearing is just way too much. Everything clashes so hard with the original gear that it completely ruins the atmosphere and any chance of taking the visual design seriously. Really amateurish way of botching what could otherwise have been a nice mod.

Yeah, that was a memory I was trying to suppress. I know modders gonna mod, but this shit looks like it was put in the game by CoD addicted fourth graders.

The original idea of Stalker seemed awesome. Then the game that followed was lukewarm. Tried my best to get into it with and without mods but never got grabbed by it. Too many gamey aspects and zones that felt too contrived. Not to mention the amount of combat, lack of outside influence into the zone and feeling that it was all too limited. Perhaps I like my Roadside Picknick a bit more monocled. The wierdness and atmosphere of Metro 2033 combined with an open world and reactivity was what I really hoped for but never got. Lost opportunity.

Still, seems loads are even now playing it so it might just be me.

Well, yeah, the game is nowhere near a monocled adaptation of RP in video game form, it's easy to see how one would be disappointed approaching it this way. For me, what makes it work is the general degrading industrial slavshit ambiance, some clever uses of area design and pacing (too often victims of modders' obsession with exponential increases in mutant population, but that's another topic), and the small but sweet bits of moment to moment gameplay such as when you're returning from a raid overencumbered and low on ammo, in the middle of the night and you're trying to dodge the horde of dogs at the Bar entrance.

Or you wanted another game with Brave Murican Soldiers Saving The World?
More than that could feel forced, like obligatory multigender, multiracial and multisexual characters in modern movies and video games.

You forgot about previous work of the GSC? Either shooters in first person or Cossacks RTS.
But I agree that armors (heavy) from Metro is mistake. But that's not only modders, but players fixation from certain nations.
Source - me, potato, who must live with Twitcher cancer in my country. This shit is everywhere, especially at release.

I think it's worth it, I wouldn't even play Shadow of Chernobyl without Zone Reclamation project now... Too buggy and frustrating. With bug fixes only, both games are enjoyable for me. Essentially vanillas without the worst bugs.

There's even bugfix only Pripyat Reclamation Project. I had a beta one from gsc forums, but it seems someone has made it better/updated: http://af.gog.com/forum/stalker_series/pripyat_reclamation_project_compilation?as=1649904300

Both are ideal for first timers and/or someone who wants to play vanilla.

Yes I remember that there was new version, when new Arsenal Overhaul 1.2 for CS come out. Was so good I even finished Clear Sky again.

Pripyat bugfix aka Pripyat Reclamation Project? I'm surprised. I though there's no such thing for CoP because it's already good in vanilia.

Speaking about Clear sky - There's Reborn Doppleganger released. People are praising the mod but translation is slow because people, who translated it before, were disgusted with previous Reborn parts.
Yes, Reborn was "modders gonna modders" full of wacky and stupid stuff, and Doppleganger was fkng brutal difficulty (Misery is piss easy compared to that one) but creator made patch and it's playable.
Reborn - new story and stuff like artifacts. Whenever I see "new artifacts" in mod description - it become my favorite until mod reveal to be complete shite.
