I wonder why they can't simply make a CRPG representation of 5E rules, since that seems like what most people want? Is it too hard for them to code a PnP ruleset into the game, or are they worried that casuals won't understand the rules?
I'm not sure how WotC would feel about all those books and figurines being made redundant by a much more convenient video game

You can (try) to grab everyone this way. Co-op for the NWN/Diablo fan. RTwP to grab IE/DA fans. Handwaving-style name dropping Sword Coast and D&D for the CRPG/P&P fan. With pretty graphics to grab the casual steam purchaser.

How would a game make the rules redundant? Video games are a poor replacement for actual tabletop play.

First trash modern AAA / publisher centric development and then proceed to make a game with the same principles except with a smaller budget...

It's called retarded corporate / publisher logic.

Not sure, maybe because by saying "inspired" they don't have to worry about being exact or dealing with complaints of them going off track. This way they can claim 5e and then pretty much do whatever they want. Kind of how movie studios get away with making a movie "based on" someones life and then making up whatever they want about it. I would rather they not use 5e at all. After reading some about it I really don't care for it, especially the way they handle spell progression (its almost like it was designed for MMOs).

That makes me wonder though, can a company make a new game these days and choose to use a past version of the system? Could they use 2nd or 3rd edition if they wanted to? I mean, if I disliked the newer systems, I would use the older ones because even though they have their own problems, they are far better than the crap they are shoveling these days.

The 3rd edition rules are freely available under the OGL, so anyone can make a game using them, that's what Knights of the Chalice did. For other editions you'll need to licence them from WotC, and I doubt they would allow it, if there is to be a proper D&D game they'll want it to use the latest rules.

5th edition is pretty much a straight upgrade over both 2nd and 3rd ed rules though, so I can't see any reason to go back. The only thing 5E is lacking is more customization options, and that's not suprising since only the basic rulebooks are out so far.
I'd kill for a proper 4E turn based crpg though. I'm sad it will almost certainly never happen.

It may be the only good to come out of this is new Dungeons & Dragons content developed for cRPGs again.

Then if TSI makes an impression with Seven Dragon Saga, they might be awarded the 5E license to create a true turn-based, rules heavy RPG. Give Shelley and co. a chance, and they'll show 'em how its done.

Yeah, 3e is totally up for grabs, minus a few monsters and books that aren't on the license. And there's one other thing that could be done - you can use the OGL to make a version of 3e that apes, say, 2e and then turn around and make a video game out of it. Or you can sign on with one of the indies who have already done a pnp like that, save yourself some work. Either way, though, it wouldn't be "real d&d", and people being the branded fuckers they are, that will cause a few issues down the road.

Still, it could be done.

Ah, the Moonshae Isles. That brings back memories - Darkwalker on Moonshae, Black Wizards ... Moonwell (which I never finished, got about 1/2 way through). Those books had a real AD&D feel.

You like the spell system in 5e? It reminds me of an MMO system that wreaks of streamlining rather than a feature rich innovation.

Edit:

Fixed Telengard, must have got the tags confused on edit.

Where's the MMO? The 5E spell system is pretty much exactly the system used by 2/3 ed sorcerers, now extended to every spellcasting class. The flexibility it brings goes a long way to keeping spellcasters fun to play even as 5E has taken the power level of most spells down a notch.

A few people asking for it on a forum are not "most people". Take a look at sales figures of games and you'll instantly see why they don't do this.

I guess so. Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights were complete flops compared to Daggerdale and D&D online...

What a strange new world where people consider BG and NWN accurate representations of D&D rules.

You're talking about games that are a decade to 15 year old. In case you haven't noticed, the RPG landscape of today is not one where P&P has a big presence.

THINK OF TEH CHILDREN

graphics look pretty good though

Yes they look good, but this picture also hint at the characters not being generated by the player aka usual bioware npc companions with their own personalities, forced upon you like it or not. We already know they have sword coast ip but not sure about the D&D ruleset, so it hints a mmo spin off ruleset ,with 8 spells by class and excel spreadsheet roster. 10 ooze quests ? Can already tell it will be filled with filler quests and therefor with filler encounters too. When you have an epic and great story to tell, you dont fill it with kill 10 rats kind of quests. The quests compass , a wow like compass is already on the top right of the screen to find those oozes more easily. The other pics on the thread show a quest journal with objective on the right , objectives you have to do in order, so its likely very railroaded too.

Might be a fun game ,or as bad as amalur, but i see nothing for hardcores despite its 3D isoand looks like a bit like baldur's gate.

As Sawyer has pointed out recently, even though OGL "allows" it, it's still pretty risky. http://www.pathguy.com/ddnext.htm just had a character creator.

When you have an epic and great story to tell, you dont fill it with kill 10 rats kind of quests.

The Witcher disagrees.

It's simple and easy content to include for people who cry when RPGs aren't x amount of hours long.

I found a comment related to this game on the net that I can't possibly even begin to understand

Phew, real time + pause. What a relief. I feared it would be a turnbased clickfest

:what:

Well, turn-based can be more clicky than real-time because there's no auto-attack. Mostly an issue in fights where standard attacks are your main activity ie trash fights.
