You could just ask the artist; might lead to more insight/entertainment.

I can personally vouch for some of the art -- as I mentioned earlier in the thread, I recommended on of the FG artists to them, they hired him, and paid him for at least a dozen images, and offered to pay him for more (and for larger images). He wound up stopping working for them, but not because they weren't paying him. So like art in this update was by my guy -- not sure if 100% was, but most was. Same with the top portrait in this update.

I did think there was a surprising leap in art quality when they started showing those big full-screen, fully-rendered pics, specifically, when they hired that Richard Luong guy. Given that they showed old Cthulhu art of his, it seems like the most reasonable explanation is that they recycled this guy's art from a separate failed project?

Incidentally, in dredging this up, I noticed the video in this update. Was there ever an explanation for what was going on here? I mean, it is an interactive animation of some kind going on.

The UI is from the Unity Asset Store, so I am pretty sure that it is running Unity scene. The initial overlay and "swirly effect" is probably video editing.

How much of what is shown is driven by proper game logic and how much is mock-up/scripted is impossible to tell, but it is obvious a lot of work went into the map animations and graphics. We also can't see if the map is "handcrafted" (ie every object is placed by hand, and not loaded from a data file) and so forth. I think there is a game being developed, but in the sense that he has a lot of assets in a Unity scene and is struggling to actually code the game utilizing the assets. It's an insane amount of work to make such a game, even once all the assets are in place, and I think they severely underestimated that work. I don't think this is a scam - it's just a couple of guys saying they have a game, thinking they can make one in a few months of work, when in reality it will take them several years of work, and they might not even be capable of producing the game they promised. Once reality caught up with them, stress and anxiety led to the current weird situation of half-truths, bizarre updates and complete lack of communication with their fanbase.

Nothing to report. Josh did reach out and his alive and is going to post another update at the end of the month he thinks.
The 3d map will be scrapped and a whole new 2d one will be put in its place I'll warrant

When I do think about this, I'm kinda shocked that the backers et al haven't flipped out over all the alpha testing lies. I mean I guess if we attain a christ-like level of charitably to the dev then they weren't "lies" per se but rather "describing things I want to be in the game as if they are already implemented and working" but goddamn

Not really. No Man's Sky is an actually existing game - which disappointed quite a few people, but others do like it. As is normal for any game, more or less.

About the backers:
Go take a look at the KS comments. There are some calling the obvious lies and BS, but so many others seem to defend the project it is... weird.

Josh, much to the shock of everyone, failed to make the kickstarter update it was claimed he was going to make. Fenicks has slunk off the forums and the regulars have settled down for inane chatter about tabletop simulator. Shits utterly dead but for people checking in on what happened to their pledge on the kickstarter and realizing they now have neither money or game to show for it.

Josh and Fenicks are piece of shit con men. It's unfortunate, but that's just how it is.
To be honest, though, I don't think they started as such.

They probably just failed to realize their failure and are incredibly skilled at lying to themselves.

We can reason it out as much as we want, but at the end of the day they made a crowdfunding campaign and took money from people and said that they already had a working beta. Lying about what you have to sell while taking money is a con.
