Dear gentlemen of Codexia, without further ado let me share with you my first roguelike win, ever! Tome 4 - adventurer difficulty, but still! Haven't felt so good about beating any game, for a long time. Like losing your v-plates but better (just kidding, but no I'm not).

Thought I'd die here, for sure. Barely hanging on at 1/4 hp.

Whoa, with some luck one guy finally went down.

Cue cheesy outro music!

Funny, I was listening to Vangelis discography for some reason while playing. Motivational! (kill me)

I just ventured in the roguelikes genre with TOME from steam and its DLC. Any addons from the workshop worth getting first time round?

On a whim, I found that Avanor have a new site instead of an old one that disappeared a long time ago.

http://avanor.sourceforge.net/

It's a very enjoyable roguelike with almost all ADOM's game features. Only short and sweet.

I read all thread. Commercialization, DLC, roguelike-likes galore, etc. The end is nigh.

Which of DCSS, ADOM or TOME4 requires the least metagame knowledge? I've downloaded the three of them, played around and they all seem worth getting into.

In TOME4 you should just follow the rule that if you are asked if you are sure you want to go somewhere or open something, you are probably not. Examples: chests, vaults, demon summoner's dungeon, graveyard.

SJWs even managed to spoil an obscure roguelike? :rpgcodex:
The Orc breeding pits were pretty nice because they developed orc society much more and showed what the women and children did (namely exist exclusively for the benefit of the army). The game still has you committing genocide by killing the 4 orc prides one by one, room by room and in fact the DLC will have you play as a secret 5th orc pride that escaped the genocide. With the breeding pits removed, the lives of the women and children are silenced from the story. Pretty ironic actually.

The content was also interesting in the same way Hotline Miami is interesting, it made you question your own decisions because the gameplay systems rewarded your killings.

I'd actually say DCSS, provided your goal is to just get a 3 rune win and you're willing to play a mage. All the important shit (how strong spells are, how much food they use up, noise they make, what enemies are weak to, etc.) is spelled out for spellcasters very conveniently. If you want a melee win however, the mechanics behind physical combat are fairly esoteric.

At any rate ADOM is a distant last place. Game is filled with deathtraps and most of the ingame 'advice' is mixed in with equal parts total horseshit (like fortune cookies in Nethack.)

dunno, knowing the capabilities of enemies and uniques is very important in Crawl and, unlike TOME, Crawl doesn't let you just open an enemy's stat sheet and view their ability list

No, but unlike ToME there aren't too many enemy special abilities in Crawl, if you're sticking to the easy parts. It's few enough that you can get by with a bit of experimentation/observation (priests can smite, imps blink, etc.) while in ToME although you can always check the enemy's skills, unless you do that all the fucking time, you'll be constantly surprised by shit. Copies of you, copies of them, damage reflecting shields, damage delaying sheilds, spells that absorb buffs, there's just way too much to keep track of.

Besides, that stuff isn't really meta knowledge. Meta knowledge are the underlying game mechanics (like how stealth works in both games), not the fact that fire lizards are resistant to fire.

DCSS actually lets you know all about enemies as soon as you can hover over them. Not sure what tripjacques is talking about

Which of DCSS, ADOM or TOME4 requires the least metagame knowledge? I've downloaded the three of them, played around and they all seem worth getting into.

In my opinion, I think ToME doesn't require all that much meta knowledge. First off, your quest log basically tells you which zones you should start in and updates as you complete certain zones. Enemy abilities and stats are visible under the "Inspect Creature" function and each ability has an explanation as to what it does when you mouse over it. Another thing is that 90%, give or take, of the abilities used by monsters are those that the player also has access to in a given class OR can use if they manage to score an item that confers that ability while worn. If you play the game long enough with a wide variety of classes/races then you'll naturally acquire in-game knowledge from the game itself.

As for character building, all of the classes have their important stats mentioned during character creation so there's not too much of a mystery there, either.
