I thought there was a way to have multiple save slots in the pc version..
Well, I guess you could make a copy of the savegame where your character is right outside the boss fog, and replace that after each attempt after quitting to main menu.

Or just save state if you're going to do that.
Nah, bros. That's not the way it's meant to be played.

I tried to play Dragon's Dogma but the first 2 hours were childish shit compared to Souls games, and the graphical direction was seriously lacking as well. Does the game pick up later on?

It also seems I've lost the opportunity to upgrade my estus flasks. I got a thing called a fire keeper soul, the description said that it would upgrade my estus flasks, so I used it. Turns out you need to bring it to a specific NPC, and using it while it's in your inventory just gives you some fucking useless humanity. Fuck this game.

:D Yeah, I hear that happens to people sometimes. Upgrading estus really isn't that important though.

It was a fucking misleading item description, being good has nothing to do with it.
Soul of a long-lost Fire Keeper.

Each Fire Keeper is a corporeal manifestation
of her bonfire, and a draw for the humanity
which is offered to her. Her soul is gnawed
by infinite humanity, and can boost the power
of precious Estus Flasks. Reinforced Estus
Flasks capture denser Estus, allowing for
increased restoration of HP.
It doesn't say anything about needing to bring it to a specific NPC. If you don't already know that, you're going to use it from your inventory and waste it. It's just bad game design, and could easily have been fixed.

I probably woulda used it if I hadn't explored firelink and seen the "Reinforce Estus flask" option at the keeper jail cell thing.

I do agree its a rather unclear description. Not worth ragequitting over though. I really do think this is the kind of thing they should have 'fixed' for ds2.

Night Goat don't fret over "mistakes", the best feeling in this game is after you do a dry run and learn the ropes -- remaking a character and watching how you power blast through the areas cuz you 'gut gud'.

You'll learn a bunch of shit, and the game does troll you hard -- but it is not really 'difficult' the way people seem to scream about it. It's a game that doesn't guarantee success.

Rule of thumb hints:

If you encounter boss fog, or fog in general, make sure to explore the area around it before entering -- there is usually a bonfire within 1 minute's run to every boss.

Never use rare items that you find in special places unless you know how/what they do, it is not shameful to look up how items work in the wiki before using them. It is a bit shameful to read boss strategies before trying them out yourself.

Don't rely on killing all bosses the first time you fight them; some are doable but many have ridiculous move-sets that have idiotic range or can one-shot you -- try to learn their moveset instead of trying to do damage. It is 100% possible to beat all bosses without a single point of damage -- even without a shield.

When in doubt, get a big shield and a spear and noob-poke your way through.

You will have much more fun if you treat the game similar to a rogue-like and accept that dying is a part of it, and so is item loss. Don't fret over optimization; you can beat the game using damn near any weapon and damn near any build.

One thing I forgot; every boss has a weakness to some kind of element. Generally you can pyro-blast everything (except a certain sexy lady) but some enemies are weaker to lightning or magic or whatever else. If you have to pick one element, IMO, fire > lightning because many bosses are strong against it.

Also, some bosses are just easier to kill with magic or archery than others. AI is a thing and while the game as RNG it is much more predictable than many other games. If you learn an enemy or bosses pattern you can basically make them do the type of attack you want them to. I learned this when doing my SL1 run with O+S and realized that I can bait them to attack when I want based on their current aggro state. Most bosses have a few states they go through and I usually classify them as "passive (rare), moderately aggro (walks towards you, but you have time to do some stuff -- common), and full aggressive (runs at you and will attack immediately; no time but to dodge.)"

if you're playing for funsies then it's pointless to get into all that but the general rule of thumb stays -- they all have a pattern and you can save yourself headache by watching for it.

Or by summoning other players. Even just one player can make a boss fight super easy -- one distracts while the other pelts away with lightning/magic/fire.

One thing I'd say for a first-timer going through and devising your own strategies for how to do stuff: If you find your tactic needs you to do something that's hard on your execution or reflexes to the point you can't do it the vast majority of the time after a few tries, you almost certainly don't need to do it that way. I drove myself to frustration more than once trying to get something very difficult down then backed off, considered things, and tried an easier way and there's always one there.

I decided to give the game another chance, and I'm enjoying it more now that I've gotten the hang of it. I'm playing a dex-based character, and I'll soon need to upgrade my weapon. I've got the Baldur's Side Sword and the Gargoyle Halberd, and both are apparently good weapons. Which is better, and why?

Gargoyle halberd is better for normal, not-ng+ PvE stuff. It does big damage at base stats, the two-handed R1 is a good mix of range and speed, and it's a fantastic elemental weapon if you want to make it lightning or fire or w/e. Balder Side Sword is good for a high dexterity build that uses it with normal upgrades + weapon buffs, but having all that shit at once in ng when you spend most of it at less than like sl 50 or so is not worth tanking your vitality and endurance (and weapon buffs take fucking forever to fire off so re-using them in bossfights you don't know by heart is a pain). Several bosses and some enemies also do a thing where they can do an invincible backdash or jump out of followup attacks after you hit them once, so a fast weapon that does quick hits only gets the same one hit a heavy hitting weapon like a halberd does.

I do very much like the gargoyle halberd moveset. It has such immense reach and varied moveset, even with one handed. I'm pretty sure you should eventually swap it out for another weapon with the same moveset but that's ways to go.

Any of you guys know will happen after July 1 when GFLW gets shut down?

There was a article about Namco Bandai “exploring options” back in January, but no new info since.
January Article:
http://www.incgamers.com/2014/01/namco-exploring-options-dark-souls-gfwl-shuts

You'll basically be playing Dark Souls 1 offline ALL the time?
I think the idea at the time was moving it to steamworks.
