If you haven't played with a pad in a while, or at all, it will probably take a bit of time to get use to it. After I did, I found it far more comfortable to play games that support it with and wouldn't switch to M+KB even if the controls are decent with it.

If gamepads weren't designed for retards who can only use 2 fingers at a time maybe they would be actually usable.

Yes, it's the OTHER people who are retarded for not being defeated by a goddamn piece of plastic with buttons. The Wii too hard on your brains too?

I'm also always amazed by te PC elitists, who complain about the gamepad being a dumb controller which is for consoleretards, yet they are not capable to use it. They just use it for a half an hour, fail, than bitch about it. God forbid to bear with it for a few more hours, to get used to it.

Ehh, I can see someone who hasn't used a controller having problems. The problem with controllers is that 95% of the work has to be done by your thumbs moving from button to stick and back (which is incredibly inefficient). KB/M use the other four fingers, and instead of moving them between a stick and 4 buttons they might move between 2 or sometimes 3 keys.

The need to overload buttons is also really annoying. Use circle for running... but also roll and the (useless) dodge backwards move. Was fighting the Hydra with no chance of him killing me, but rolled into the water because fail.

Bros, it's painful.

I'm always amused by you ubermenschen and your inability to master a 12-button plus sticks control scheme. I guess keyboards will have to change to this in the future to accomodate you...

You're 100% right, bro. It's interesting how we can master 100+ keys plus 5+ mouse buttons, though, isn't it? It's almost like it's superior to the 12 button 2 stick you mouthbreeders use.

In the case of Dark Souls, it's a matter of principle. I don't want to have to "learn" an inferior control scheme to play the game. It's not that I can't. I won't. It sets a bad precedent.

Lazy ports are to be mercilessly bashed. The developers didn't even have the decency to make the game playable with the standard PC controls, let alone implement some graphic and UI options and you have the gall to mock the players? Am I holding it wrong? Should I equip the ring? You stupid, blind, dirty console peasant. Apologists and nuthuggers like you are doing every true PC gamer a disservice.

Fixing the camera movement and letting us bind the keys makes K+M >> gamepad in Dark Souls. It's a different situation in PES or NBA 2k. Using a gamepad makes sense in those games.

You can't be that stupid, can you Matt?

First time playing a Dark/Demon Souls game and I just got out of the asylum and didn't get dead. The tutorial kinda sucks though since it says USE BONFIRES TO ENKINDLE YOURSELF and I have no goddamn idea what that does. But I can't do it while I'm undead. But to un-undead myself I have to use humanity which I got from the asylum demon. But the packrat in me doesn't like using up items before I know what they'll do.

Using the resolution fix, game's still pretty ugly but it's tolerable. Performance is kinda crap though, got some slight slowdown in a few areas. Also tried learning to parry since a tutorial text thing mentioned that but didn't manage to pull it off. I kinda assume it's only a two-handed mode thing, otherwise why parry when you can shield?

I guess you didn't quite catch the "you're too dumb to master a keyboard either" reference, what with me saying "keyboards will have to be dumbed down for you too".

The problem with the gamepad is not that it's an inherently inferior control scheme, but that you're not familiar enough with it to feel comfortable using it. Trust me, I would know.

Now, one might expect the cream of the crop "masters of ONE HUNDRED KEYS PLUS MOUSE BUTTONS" to be able to learn how to use a gamepad enough to actually play a game. But no, it might just be a fact that trying out something different is too hard when your brain is hardwired to stuff you already know - sort of like how console kiddies find oldschool games too archaic to be playable.

Yeah, after finishing both Souls games I still haven't figured out how I am supposed to use the sticks and the ABXY buttons at the same time. Must be some defect in my brain, but maybe I'll understand if you point it out for me?

First, fuck you for calling me Matt. Second: that is why you are all stupid. So the reason why you don't use gamepad is that it is inferior and it sets a bad precedent. This might be true, but a) this inferior control scheme is just enough for this kind of game. It really is. You don't have to aim precisely (like in an FPS) and you don't have to micromanage (RTS). After you get used to it, you can control your character and the camera easily. JUST .... GET...USED...TO....IT! b) ok, the port is bad, and the K+M control sucks, but it is good with a gamepad. But if the game is interesting, you really want to miss out on it, just because you are lazy to learn a new control scheme?

This is why people rarely see me bitching about fucked up controls. Because I don't let it to hinder my enjoyment. The K+M control sucks? No problem, I use my gamepad. Is it inferior? Yes. Does it matter in this game? No!

You really don't need to use the right stick and the ABXY at the same time. ABXY is for inventory, running and similar minor functions. Combat is the part, where cameracontrol is important, and during combat, you don't have to use ABXY, just to shoulder buttons, which are manageble while you use the right stick with you thumb.

Bro, I mastered your mother, so how hard can using a keyboard be? Are you that stupid or did you not read my post? I have used a gamepad before and will use it for games that play better with a gamepad (or give me enough of competitive advantage). I have no interest in learning to play basketball in flip-flops, not because of a habit of playing in basketball shoes, but because my performance would be reduced. I have, however, learned to dribble and shoot with either hand, despite of my habit of using only my right hand for those actions, as that did improve my performance.

Gamepad IS an inherently inferior control scheme FOR ME in the case of Dark Souls. I don't want to become "familiar enough with it to feel comfortable using it". It's a waste of time and effort.

But this has nothing to do with gamepad controls, it has all to do with LACK OF proper K+M controls. I'm not bitching about PS3 version having shitty K+M controls. This is a PC game and I expect the option of playing it like a PC game. You can play it with a gamepad, I don't give a shit how you play your games. Wear mittens. Use your tongue! Go nuts! I just want to play like civilized people do, with K+M.

I see you really are that stupid, Matt. Good to have it confirmed :salute:

I can't turn the camera while sprinting. And when I want to select spells or items I have to stand still, which is not pretty in the heat of battle. Both are common situations. While not huge issues, they do detract from the enjoyment of the game and are a consequence of gamepad's flaws.

I suffer the crappy pad controls because the game is good, but there's no denying that it would be better with working K&M controls. Precise mouse aim in particular, instead of constantly having to switch lock on/off or pray your dodge goes into the direction you want to instead of getting you stuck on some object and consequently killed.

Ah, so you were complaining that playing with a gamepad was impossible (I haven't actually referred to, let alone said anything about, the shitty K+M controls), I pointed out it was your fault for being subhuman, and now you're left without an argument because you never actually had one. Hey, your momma's fat (BOOM! there, are we done?).

I can't turn the camera while sprinting.

Just do this with your controller, Einstein. FFS, 8-year-old Paintmaster consolekiddie figured it out.

rofl, you have to be trolling. That hand position would not only be uncomfortable as hell for anyone with non-deformed hands but almost impossible to press any button except Y with that finger too.

I'll quote this, so you don't edit it.

Firstly, lrn 2 read:

I just played it for a half an hour. Bros, it's painful. Playing with a gamepad is like playing with my left hand on the mouse. I last used a gamepad when I played NBA2k and PES a couple of years ago. I have to constantly think which button does what (shoulder buttons being attack/defense doesn't help), so any flow and dodging in combat is really hard to pull off..

I'll quote this, so you don't edit it.

And what do I care what your hands look like? Mine are pretty and dexterous, and my brain can handle using more than two fingers per hand when playing a game.

X/Y were no problem. B was a little uncomfortable without shifting my grip, I couldn't reach A without shifting the grip or straining my finger. One-handed grip 'cause camera had to be held somehow

ViRbr.jpg

[edit]

Loosening my right hand grip allows me to rotate my hand 20-30 degrees CCW (as left hand can hold onto the controller when I'm not using a camera. This allowed XYAB buttons to be reached easily we well as the shoulder button, but prevents my middle finger from interacting with right trigger.

If gamepads weren't designed for retards who can only use 2 fingers at a time maybe they would be actually usable.

Normal grip is middle fingers on the triggers, index fingers on the shoulder buttons, thumbs on the sticks/dpad/keys. That's 6 fingers. Playing the computer you'd probably use 3-4 fingers on the kb and 2-3 fingers on the mouse. So about the same. :P

Ulminati Are you seriously saying you can play holding a controller like that?

I can easily reach and operate all right side buttons and triggers (I have long fingers), but holding a controller that way would cause my hands to cramp in a matter of minutes.

Marsal, SerratedBiz. you can stop arguing now. I just posted photos of how it's possible with normal hands. Admittedly I have pianists fingers, but my main problem in the ergonomics of the whole thing was that my index finger was too long, not too short.

Marsal Yes, I can play holding the controller like that no problem. My left hand supports the weight of the thing just fine, allowing me to shift my right hand slightly to get all the buttons in easy reach. Give it an afternoon and it all feels pretty natural.

I'd also like to add, that you don't necessarily have to hold the controller that way all the time, so you don't hurt your pretty hands.

I'm not arguing with him, I'm laughing at him. No one holds a controller that way, regardless of finger length and hand size (I could palm a basketball in 8th grade, so I doubt you have longer fingers or bigger hands than me).

Why don't you play that way if it's so natural? It would obviously allow you better control of the game.
