Have they had enough time to develop or even license a new engine? There's no way they're using Gamebryo again, right?

Nothing officials, but they've made comments they're using GameBryo again. "Significantly upgraded".

EDIT: here
Eurogamer: Is it fair to say then that it's based on existing technology?

Todd Howard: The technology is ours and it is inspired by the technology we have. We have a lot of it. But that's our starting point - the Fallout 3 tech. It started with Morrowind, we went to Oblivion, we did a lot between Oblivion and Fallout 3 because now we had final hardware - with Oblivion we had six months on final hardware, so Fallout 3 technically does a lot more than Oblivion. The new stuff is an even bigger jump from that.

I can say it is on the existing platforms, which we're really happy with. You almost feel like you have a new console when you see the game.

Jeez, I wonder which demographic this game will be aimed at.

That said, I thought the trailer looked kind of cool. No D3/DA2-like omgaction scenes, no anime inspired shit either. I know the codex is full of lit/film students but if it hadn't been bethesda but rather some random company I think you had agreed.

What's the chance they'll ditch the old ES dialogue system for actual dialogue trees?

There is no difference, really. Just compare BaK's writing (keywords) with DA's (derp dialogue trees). In the end, it's all about writer's talent.

Oh god fucking dammit.. not the fucking DRAGONS AGAIN!!

OK, so here's the thing with Dragons in RPG's. Developers think they are cool (esp. for those next-gen platform audience I bet) and I have yet to play a single fucking game except for Drakan, that has made them look and sound exciting in any way possible.

I think a perfect example is Dragon Age. In Divinity 2 at least it was cool to jump off a cliff and transform into a dragon.. where, of course, the designers managed to kill the fun in one blow by not letting the player target ground units (though I managed to find bugs where I could target ground units with dragon breath every now and then.. it was fun for a few seconds).
It was still somewhat cool despite how massively they fucked everything up with inability to samshrendscorchdestroy ground units.

Good example of well implemented dragon pwnage (and sucky most everything else) would be The I of The Dragon.

I like that trailer. The music is p. cool, and it's about Nords which I like, but it's still Bethesda doing it which means there'll be inevitable lore-rape and inanity. I do at least hope it'll be an improvement over FO3, like FO3 was an improvement over Oblivion.

Well, they did ditch the dialogue system in Oblivious, so they are almost half-way there.

Not really. Here are some Arena shots from Imp. City area.
Arena had no real lore to speak of. That started to get established in Daggerfall. Battlespire established most of the daedric lore, the Redguard established most Tamrielic lore (the game being one big history lesson for the setting, and the Pocket Guide being the lore of the various provinces, including establishing the Imperial Province as half-jungle)
This.

Obivion was essentially Arena 2 in this regard.

This will be a return to Morrowind I'm sure of it. The environments will be much better than the generic plains found in Oblivion, and I'm sure everything won't be so awkward and stilted.

Yeah, coz Bethesda has so many motivations to fix that stuff no one complained about for their multi-million selling title.

They did change things for Fallout 3, and it was very well received. Oblivion Oscuro's Overhaul was very successful too, enough for Obsidian to hire the guy to help with NV.

A trailer comprised entirely of "THE EVIL ONES ARE RETURNING AS PER THE ANCIENT PROPHECY, THE CHOSEN ONE MUST DEFEAT THEM" is pretty bile-worthy tbh

Yes. And I hope they'll take some stuff on board like more interesting quests and a better RPG system, but I'm not going to assume they do.

Oscuro did a shitty job on New Vegas btw. He did the world map design, I think. It's poop.

I can't even understand half of what the voice-over narration is saying.

Except for the brilliant one-liner:

When the truth finally dawned, it dawns in fire!

Jesus Christ, the writing is so terrible.

its a swede who is talking, Max von Sydow, maybe they wanted to make it truly nordic by using him as the narrator or something.

hopefully they didnt blow all their cash on celebrity voices and had to cut back on the rest of the game again.

You almost feel like you have a new console when you see the game.

IMO f3 was a huge improvement over oblivion.

That's like saying having Down's is a huge improvement over having autism.

Wait what? Don't you mean the other way around?

With Autism at least you get something out of it.

That whole trailer looked more like a whole bunch of multi-headed dicks hitting ass and leg than anything leg.

Good, good.

Now what do you see in this one?

but remember Dragons in TES are almost extinct, and those who survive does it thanks to the Empire, working as heavy weapons for them in conquests (as exampled in Redguard.) and is said to live among the general populace transformed as normal humans, and now they supposedly rise up against humanity?

nice by them to show lore rape in the first trailer.

It's probably referring to the Akavir snake-bros and their King, to be fair. I think Skyrim's where they attacked before, so it would make sense - not that they're not going to make it as painfully generic as they can, but so far there's no real lore-rape.

You'll be doing the first LP of this game, right?

It's supposedly in the distant future (that will likely still be at the same tech level...) after the fall of the empire. I can buy "the dragons have been fucking a lot while men and mer were too busy going to shit with the fall of the empire", though I doubt Bethesda would use a semi-reasonable explanation.

If they were like this
DaggerfallDragonling.gif

instead of fully grown, I would also be more inclined to accept it.

This.

Unless there are some massive plot twists, they autofailed before even showing anything that would be part of their game.

I want to believe this will turn out ok but, after Oblivion, I'll adopt a wait-and-see approach.

The Codex: where we know that new Bethesda games suck so bad and have no redeeming features whatsoever, so much that we're only going to play through the game 2 times instead of 4.
