It's like they looked at Brutal Doom and said "We have to copy that shit!" which isn't what Doom is all about.

No, it's not even like Brutal Doom because Brutal Doom has shitloads of enemies and is fast as fuck, it's basically just Doom turned up to 11.

This is... eh, Doom turned down to 1.

When I say like Brutal Doom I mainly mean the rip and tear stuff. They took the melee concept and ran with it. The one thing I dislike about Brutal Doom is how tearing the demons up slows down the combat. At least Brutal Doom still throws hordes of demons at you. As you said.

Yeah, so basically they're not only not getting Doom right... they're not even getting Brutal Doom right because they only looked at one single feature of the mod, decided it's awesome and put it into the game. Nevermind that most players won't use these melee finishers very often, and that one of the other main features of BD is to make the game even more ridiculously challenging (some levels on the "normal" Ultraviolence difficulty are fucking hell, esepcially in Doom 2 I died a lot more often than in vanilla) and add even more weapons... what does Bethesda do? Put in LESS weapons and LESS enemies, which is exactly the opposite and completely misses the point of both BD and the original Doom.

Now that I think about it, this isn't all too different to what they did with Fallout 3. "Fallout had hilarious gory fatalities and the bloody mess feat, let's add gore hahaha!", and they pretty much failed at everything else.
Actually, they even failed at the gore.

Not saying much really. The enemy design looks the same which is not good. The action is slowed down by dumbass kill animations and a weapon wheel of all things. It's like they looked at Brutal Doom and said "We have to copy that shit!" which isn't what Doom is all about. I'm willing to bet we can count on more boring ass corridors like in Doom 3, as opposed to the open level design of the originals.

You missed the point, in Doom 4 you can actually see something.

Just checked out the E3 video - all I can say is that they seem to have managed to update the "no more than 2 enemies on screen at one time because our engine can't handle more" issue from Doom3 to 3 and even 4 at once in places! Unleash the hordes of Hell!

So in that video, I saw that Hell is basically in ruins somehow. How does the Hell society function then? Was it originally a highly developed civilization that got destroyed by technology and hate? Are the demons in fact simply locked in a desperate war for survival?

Hell is still recovering from the asswhoop it got from the original Doomguy. The increasing economic crisis forces it to invade mankind again in search of Lebensraum.

Doomguy is the 13% of the population that nobody wants to admit is committing 90% of the crime.

That explains why there are so few demons to fight, their population is still recovering from original Doomguy's genocide.

Meanwhile it has been said that campaign coop will not exist. A poor design decision given how linear and repetitive the gameplay was in the preview (and that was only 2 levels and it started to get boring). What does the game offer compared to same old Doom3? Takedowns? Piss filter? Whatever... another title to skip.

Doom 4 brings the gore of Brutal Doom to a modern graphics engine for people who find the original Doom's visuals to be too archaic.

Just like Fallout 3 and the bloody mess perk. That's what Bethesda is all about.

In all honesty, DooM is one of those games where I'd never touch if I were a developer.

Its undeniable that the gaming industry changed a lot since back in the days. Shooters have changed, and according to few, to worse. The Codex showed me how the original Doom didn't have headshots or weakpoints on enemies and that was a good thing, for it meant that combat was against hordes of enemies (and managing to dodge projectiles while mowing down the mass) while Arena shooters focus more on duels (avoiding an enemy's attack, doing precise headshots). This can be seen even in good shooters - in UT for example, every fight was a duel, even a 8x8 fight was a series of miniduels between people. Shooters changed.

Since then, Halo happened, which introduced regenerating shields. Gears of War, with its cover system, and CoD or whatever brought that ironsight mechanic. Contemporary shooters are a blend of these mechanics (ironsight, regenerating health, cover system) as well as cutscene-styled takedowns. These changes reduced the skills involved in a game: movement (strafing) was simplified into cover, exploration (finding medkits) was simplified into regen, and mowing down hordes of enemies (managing groups rather than individuals) became series of simplified duels (headshot one, duck, headshot another, duck).

With today's understanding of what a shooter is, how can you make another Doom game? Should we do it modern, arena-style or retro Doom?

Should we keep the art style or should we make it more realistic? More cartoony? More gritty and edgy?

Should we reboot the story again, make a Doom2 sequel or a Doom3 (reboot) sequel?

Should we change what Doom is (and lose all the fans) or keep it the same, but with better graphics (and have console kiddies hate it and lose profit)?

Truth is, the hardcore Doom fans will play Doom, not NuDoom. Nobody asked for better graphics or takedowns, the game was good as it was. And with its reputation as the "first shooter ever", many console kiddies will be too intimidated to try it out.

Its a developer's nightmare. Nobody should've accepted this.

You needed an RPG Board to tell you how good Doom 1 & 2 is?

Also, if you're a dev who doesn't give a fuck about brands and shit (Re: Bethesda), making a new Doom game is easy-money. Just slap a generic modern shooter onto whatever you find on google when searching "classic Doom". Bam, 1 mil sales, guaranteed.

However good this turns out to be, I fail to see how relevant this game is.

As above posters pointed, it is just Doom with updated graphics. If you want to (slightly) update visuals and gameplay of Doom, get Brutal Doom. Enough of doing the same levels and the same monsters, get a wad.
What is this game bringing to the table, gameplay wise, that Doom cannot ? Are we to pretend that Brutal Doom doesn't exist ? Are we to pretend Doom 4 is going to be moddable the same way the original game is ?

I really don't get it. Even if it's good, it will remain forgotten while people still turn to the original Doom, because of how functional and simple it is. Updating Doom feels pretty much like trying to update Chess for a modern audience while claiming loud that the core game rules are not going to be changed, but it's going to look prettier.

Why ?

Wanna make a fast paced FPS ? It's easy, make it it's own thing. Calling it "Doom" just hoping it to replace the classic isn't going to cut it.
