With today's understanding of what a shooter is, how can you make another Doom game? Should we do it modern, arena-style or retro Doom?

Make it gorgeous, but keep the satanic/monster/carnage look in it.

Fuck story and character dialogues. Just dump hero in Hell and demonic infested planets. Have a story in mind while creating levels, but don't tell it.

Keep the monsters coming in packs, but add headshots and individual bodypart hitboxes. Make monsters get dismembered and keep fighting.

Make huge levels and let the player navigate them without forcing a pre determined path. Make claustrophobic dark sections with tough ass monsters too.

Keep gameplay fast. Give no Health auto recharge.

Boom, fixed!


Also, no kill animations, 'cause that shit gets old fast and ruins the flow.

As above posters pointed, it is just Doom with updated graphics.

If only. This is nothing like Doom, it's missing all the core elements that make Doom Doom. This is another slow popamole fps in the same vein as RAGE and Wolfenstein TNO.

I gotta say I like hit zones on enemies. It shouldn't be that hard. Maybe if you don't think in terms of demographics and make a nice game, but you need a soul for that so all the big developers are out of the game.

AlexOfSpades think that game developers have dignity and conscience, while other two forgot that you need developer with talent to do what they ask for.
And yet they still forgot that modern engines are bloatware that shit itself when it comes to bigger groups of enemies (wonder who worked that around, except Croteam?).

If I were developer I totaly would work on that project, that make some people butthurt. But didn't bother reading all that whining pre- and after release.

That's an interesting question, since we know that there will be mod support. Of course we need to know how good will be the tools provided by Id to change the game. The scene won't be so crowded as with the original Doom, since Carmack released the entire source code.

No. That little map editor they apparently love to brag about looks woefully limited.
And hell, even if this game turned out to be some sort of enormous success, and even if better tools were provided and if outsiders were able to gain better understanding of this engine, I can guarantee that you stil won't see anything in any way comparable to original games modding/mapping scene

I think DraQ already mentioned in this thread how the nuDoom editor only has slightly variable building blocks rather than allowing the builder to freely design architecture by himself.

From released vids it seems to resemble the process used to generate Daggerfall's dungeons - snap together largish blocks of predefined architecture in predefined ways, except shinier and human operated.

It seems like a case of straightforward ease of use VS actual usefulness tradeoff.

So in that video, I saw that Hell is basically in ruins somehow. How does the Hell society function then? Was it originally a highly developed civilization that got destroyed by technology and hate? Are the demons in fact simply locked in a desperate war for survival?

Hell is just some mind imagery of all things that are considered evil, and where you are supposed to be held for eternity to be tortured just because you dont follow the guidelines in a book but instead behave as you naturally are.

Of course it is going to be bleak, ruined and red.

Nah, the hardware can handle it and the software can do it.

It's just that the devs think the wetware won't be able to keep up.

Both JollyWanker and Cr1tical released video from that mod but both without final battle music. What a shame.

PS. I recently tried playing Doom3 and.... guns are awful and sounds bad. It's mindblowing how people that made Doom1&2 released something with worst gun possible.

Yes. Is that surprising for you? Forgot about duct tape for flashlight, which was faster than nude patch, and fix that make it playable on Windows 98 (yeah I tried that one but didn't worked, wonder why)
The only good mod for D3 is The Dark Mod, luckly it cut out from the rotten base and it's standalone. Beat the Thi4f without sweat.
Other mods tried to fix guns (Strelok) or hard-on graphic whores (Wulffen+sikkmod) but were meh, mostly because you still play Doom3.
Plus ton of fan made missions, like Event Horizon (levels are worse than Duck Nukem but have p.cool sounds).

I was talking about content mods. I know all about the graphical shit, none of which does anything to improve the game. Linear levels, slow movement, shit gunplay. The game was just plain terrible. I never played Rage but Doom 3 is still probably the worst shooter id soft has ever made. How the fuck they managed to fuck everything to such a degree is a mystery. Quake 2 may have been decline but it was still a real shooter, and Quake 3 was pretty great for what it was. Doom 3 felt like it was made by a completely different company.
