The essence of Gothic, especially the first. No one did it better. It's why it's my #1 GOAT.

I know, but I guess I'm just one of those clients who didn't get the memo, like Infinitron put it. I want to go through the process of getting a tip about a good game, checking it out, looking it up on stores, waiting for a discount most probably, then buying it, and having it sit in my library until I can get around to playing it.

Jeez, and I thought I was the resident boomer.

I wouldn't be so irritated if it wasn't for the fact that publisher and platform-owner are shaking hands over how they are both going to shit on my head. Who benefits from the exclusivity - certainly not the customer.

I don't give a rat's arse about the customer. Customers are spoiled entitled brats who need to FOAD already.

I do give a shit about the people actually making the games.
I recently saw a post on gamefaqs you made about Witcher 1 in 2006. *Tips hat*

I'm something of a boomer too. When 9/11 happened, I turned around from my computer to see the TV, and I remember I was on #arcanum on IRC.

I was dealing with being laid off as a result of the dot com crash. Now I'm retired and cranky. Time grinds us all into dust.

There's nothing wrong with a charachter that tries to find ways to compliment the player regardless of what he does. Its even mentioned afterwards in the panel that there are other charachters like companions that can act as foils.

Also how is that like Edi? Edi's role was like 90% creepy flirting with joker.

"When I was a junior designer I thought it's really funny if characters are mean to you," Starks said. "That's not really an enjoyable experience.
Actually Megan, your younger self had a point. A decade after playing Oblivion, the characters that stand out for me are the Arena master who continously mocks you, and the Dark Brotherhood vendor who hates your guts. They were both memorable due to their unfriendliness.
HK-47 also memorably mocks the player in KotOR 2 when discussing the HK-50's, insinuating that the Exile's most noteworthy trait is being a failed Jedi who up to recently couldn't even use the Force.

Having someone thinking lowly of you and then have you winning their respect can be a great experience.

Ok, but this isn’t her overall philosophy, it’s just her approach to a single non-companion NPC that you can’t get rid of because she’s your spaceship. I watched that whole panel and this quote is being taken out of context. There will be tons of NPCs in The Outer Worlds who are mean to you.

Edit: also, it helps to be fluent in valley girl if you’re gonna listen to a Megan Starks interview.

ADA sounds a lot like EDI. Going for that Mass Effect audience, eh.

Eh, they’re definitely going for the Mass Effect audience, but the semi-sentient spaceship trope is a lot older than BioWare. It sounds like they’re trying to make their AI feel really weird, which might be an interesting spin on it. Or maybe not. I think the execution will matter a lot more than the originality of the ideas (or lack thereof).

5$ a month is waaaay different than 5$ for a game. You are at the mercy of Microsoft to offer the games you want to play.

Also AFAIK they are not permanent, most games are eventually delisted and you can't play them after that even if they are installed.

Still, I might be playing with danger, but I just decided to buy a subscription since they have a sale where you get two month's of the "ultimate" package (whatever that means) for $2 (or 2 euros in my case). By the time the game is out, i'll only have a few days to play it (I do not plan on subscribing, I disabled the auto-renew - which was at ~16 euros, an amount i'd never pay, though I guess that was for two months again - the moment I got the subscription). But then again my computer is a weak potato, it'll only be for trying it out to see if I like it enough to buy it (at some other store, preferably GOG).

I also noticed how huge games have become. Almost every game I wanted to try out (e.g. the new Wolfenstein, the Gears shooters, Metro Exodus, etc) needs a crapton of disk space I do not have - I have ~32GB free at the moment and that was after temporarily squeezing everything I can out to my external hard disk. Gears 4 (and most likely Gears 5 too) needs more space than my SSD can even contain (133GB, my SSD is 128GB) :-P.

Not all games are so bloated, but I wonder how the hell does a game become 133GB? And how do you even download that on slow connections like 10mbps that many places have (not even taking into account that some places do not even have unlimited downloads)?

Gears 5's preload only take 60 GB, how on earth does Gears 4 take 133?

Probably 4k textures that only .1% of the people playing will use but everyone has to suffer for

133GB is the on-disk requirement, so perhaps Gears 5 is compressed? I took a look but didn't mention any space requirements at all (it is still in preorder mode here though, it may mention the disk requirements once it becomes available).

I tried to install Wolfenstein II on the external hard disk drive (it'd be *very* slow but at least i can check out the game) but since it is exFAT instead of NTFS (so i can use it without issues via other OSes and PCs) and exFAT doesn't support the permission stuff Microsoft's DRM wants, it didn't work. Sadly the "didn't work" part was something i had to figure out after the fact (no relevant errors, just "something went wrong") and now i'm trying to delete the mess of folders that Windows created when i chose to allow installing applications there (i reverted that choice, but the mess remained) - but apparently there *is* enough permission functionality on exFAT to not allow me to delete the folders.

So now i'm making a Linux USB disk to reboot and delete the folders from there because according to Microsoft i should not be able to have access to all files on my own computer. What a shitshow...

Oh I know she was talking about the ship AI who, as a permanent character, would make players quit the game if it was super annoying. That's why I calmly made a remark instead of frothing at the mouth in a fit of rage like I normally would have.
The quote can however pessimistically be interpreted as "make sure companions aren't assholes to the player" which would be a shame. Take a character like Jaime Lannister, guy's a douche but I would love to go adventuring with him.
In a game where you can kill anyone and choose your own path, I would be very supportive of a couple of mean assholes to choose from that stand out against the friendly and diplomatic characters.

my SSD is 128GB

It's fucking 2019. I'm pretty sure my buddy threw a 256gb SSD in the trash a few months ago

I built this computer around November 2018, but i'm almost certain that even nowadays new ~128GB SSDs can still be bought :-P.

I managed to work around the filesystem issue by creating an 128GB virtual disk image in my external hard disk drive, formatting that with NTFS and installing Wolfenstein II there. The writing is garbage and a huge step down from the previous game, but the gameplay it still good - at least so far. I might buy it properly in a sale around Christmas. The engine is also beautifully optimized, despite my potato PC with the 2400G APU I manage to get 60+ FPS all the time and the loading times despite going through a virtual disk *and* an external hard disk drive connected through USB are very fast (it did complain that I do not have enough VRAM and might be unstable, but so far I had no issues).

Then again the game is two years old and id Tech 6 is silky smooth. Still I hope The Outer Worlds will be optimized enough to be playable even if at lowest settings.
