(Man you're spoiled though, whining about shit like this. Back in the day we had to write our own GPU drivers. In ink. That we prepared from the blood of our firstborn.)
I wouldn't be so irritated if it wasn't for the fact that publisher and platform-owner are shaking hands over how they are both going to shit on my head. Who benefits from the exclusivity - certainly not the customer.

Thing is, it's not the only potentially interesting game in there. There's close on a dozen in the "hmm interesting" category there.
I know, but I guess I'm just one of those clients who didn't get the memo, like Infinitron put it. I want to go through the process of getting a tip about a good game, checking it out, looking it up on stores, waiting for a discount most probably, then buying it, and having it sit in my library until I can get around to playing it.

BTW, I'm not kidding that I really don't have time to play. For the past month, I've done 26 hrs 25 mins in Witcher 1. I usually play 1-2 hours a day at most. Some days I don't even play at all.

I understand very well what's behind the subscription scheme which allows you access to a big number of games. It's done to stimulate consumption and to urge you on to make the best use of this month's subscription. But for me this is pressure that I'd rather do without even if in the end I pay more per hour played. And one more point - old fashioned as it is, I like to be able to keep games on my own storage, should I choose to.

Fun fact: Valve got a lot of hate back in the day for making Half-Life 2 exclusive to Steam. HL2 is also a big reason for why Steam is the dominant store.

And don't forget that you needed Steam to play Counter-Strike, the most popular MP game at the time. No wonder Epic took the chance when they had the same luck with Fortnite!

Jeez, and I thought I was the resident boomer.

I don't give a rat's arse about the customer. Customers are spoiled entitled brats who need to FOAD already.

I do give a shit about the people actually making the games.

I recently saw a post on gamefaqs you made about Witcher 1 in 2006. *Tips hat*

I'm something of a boomer too. When 9/11 happened, I turned around from my computer to see the TV, and I remember I was on #arcanum on IRC.

What really solidified Steam's dominance is the insane sales they started doing starting from around 2010. Faced with $5 game after $5 game, a whole generation of hardcore, oldschool "What do you mean, there's no box and manual?" PC gamers said goodbye to their CD drives forever and never looked back. (The few who missed the memo like jewboy here find the whole Epic vs Steam thing a bit incomprehensible)

Which brings us back to the original topic. As soon as it sinks in that Microsoft is offering games for $5 a month, you might see that sort of generational shift again.

I'm too old for this shift.

If only there were already a thread about the Epic Store.
Being exclusive to a chinese botnet platform is an important aspect of the game worth discussing in its own thread.
I agree, so go start a thread about it. We don't need to repeat this same pointless conversation in every single thread where a game comes out on Epic.

Where do I go if I want to discuss the actual fucking game? 7 pages of this shit and no signs of stopping.

How do you discuss a game that's not even out yet?

Summary of PAX West panel: https://www.pcgamer.com/the-outer-worlds-has-a-yes-man-and-her-name-is-ada/

The Outer Worlds has a 'yes-man' and her name is ADA
Obsidian writers talked characters at PAX West, including the ship AI who won't judge your poor choices.

At PAX West last weekend, three writers from Obsidian Entertainment sat down on a panel to discuss how they brought the characters of the upcoming The Outer Worlds to life. Senior narrative designer Carrie Patel talked about the companion she wrote for, Ellie, and explained how developing a new series requires a lot of inter-team communication and defining touchstones like Firefly or Deadwood. Narrative designer Kate Dollarhyde discussed her own companion, Parvati, the supergenius engineer. The audience Q&A, for its part, made sure not to neglect the obligatory shoutout to Fallout: New Vegas, developed by Obsidian almost a decade ago.

Megan Starks, another senior narrative designer, got into some details about the protagonist's AI ship companion. In The Outer Worlds, you'll hop around planets on a ship inauspiciously called The Unreliable with the help of an AI called the Autonomous Digital Astrogator, or ADA for short. Starks describes ADA as "this giant box that just has a little face on it," a gag that might sound familiar to fans of Obsidian's past work on Fallout: New Vegas.

Moderator Andrea Rene jumped in to ask if ADA could actually turn on the player. We already know that other companions in The Outer Worlds may disagree with your choices so strongly that they ditch you entirely. Starks explained how when it comes to writing character like ADA, her approach has changed over the course of her career.

"When I was a junior designer I thought it's really funny if characters are mean to you," Starks said. "That's not really an enjoyable experience. So usually when I write a character that I know you're going to be with for the entire game, no matter what your playstyle is they will actually like it for their own reasons. I have to come up with the motivations for why they would be okay with your choices.

"For [ADA], she needs a ship captain and a crew. If she doesn't have that then it's a type of death. She's just by herself forever alone. So whoever her captain is she's going to be loyal to them." Starks' explanation was more than either I or the moderator had expected, though a welcome insight into the considerations taken when creating game characters.

While confrontations can be amusing or interesting in short bursts, Starks is likely right that sustained, continual disagreement with a character you're stuck with for the duration of a game would begin to wear on any player. Instead, ADA will bring surprise not in the form of "ADA will remember that…" but in how she manages to approve of your potentially wicked ways.

Later on, Starks and Dollarhyde explain how the human companions will be much more opinionated. Felix, Ellie, and Parvati, The Outer Worlds' other companions, will approve or disapprove of how you choose to handle quests or which faction you align yourself with. ADA, by contrast, is the metaphorical "yes-man" if ever there were one, finding a way to agree with whatever choices you decide to make.

To hear the rest of the panel and audience Q&A, you can watch the Twitch highlight above. During the panel, Obsidian also released a new propaganda trailer from the corporate overlords at Halcyon advertising all the great jobs and entertainment on-world. The Outer Worlds will release on October 25th on the Epic Games Store.

Lauren loves long books and even longer RPGs. She got a game design degree and then, stupidly, refused to move to California. She plays indie games you haven't heard of and will never pass on a story about players breaking games or playing them wrong.

When 9/11 happened kids in my elementary school were signing cheerful songs about Osama Bin Laden :)

Zombra Completely serious, I even somehow remember the words. Sadly it's in Polish.

This is pretty random, but this quote reminds me of a story that my father told me. He was in elementary school during the German occupation of Norway from 1940-1945. Above the blackboard they had one of those maps of Europe that you could roll down. During recess the kids in class would sometimes roll down the map and throw darts at it and try to hit Germany. By the end of the war the entirety of Germany was just a big hole.

Actually Megan, your younger self had a point. A decade after playing Oblivion, the characters that stand out for me are the Arena master who continously mocks you, and the Dark Brotherhood vendor who hates your guts. They were both memorable due to their unfriendliness.
HK-47 also memorably mocks the player in KotOR 2 when discussing the HK-50's, insinuating that the Exile's most noteworthy trait is being a failed Jedi who up to recently couldn't even use the Force.

Having someone thinking lowly of you and then have you winning their respect can be a great experience.
