Was this fun at all? I remember being hyped when it was announced way back but never grabbed it, and it is suspicious to me that the gameplay clips are super succinct and cut-short when they show actual combat.

Not on solo. I played some of it on co-op when it was on gamepass and it was more fun but that's normal for beat'em ups. But there is no local co-op and the servers will be turned off so I don't know if you could even play it using remote play together or something like that. Effectively dead.
