http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/mind-games/201207/scarcity-and-the-steam-summer-sale

Consider a simple 1975 experiment by psychologist Stephen Worchel to provide an illustration of this concept involving baked goods. Posing as a consumer products survey, the experimenters offered each subject a chocolate chip cookie from one of two jars. One of the jars had many cookies in it. The other had only a few. Of course, people reported the cookies from the mostly empty jars as more delicious, more desirable, and more expensive. This despite that the cookies in both jars WERE THE SAME COOKIES.

But Steam and similar download services sell digital games, right? They’re not cookies that are about to disappear, there is literally an UNLIMITED SUPPLY of the 1s and 0s that comprise these digitally distributed games. True, but the scarcity effect still applies, because it’s not so much the scarcity of the physical product that we react to, but the opportunity to buy it.

The Steam Summer Sale invokes the scarcity effect by being a limited time event that only runs July 12 through July 22. On top of that, many of the items on sale change every day, so if you see a game you want, you'd better act now. But on top of THAT, Steam is TRIPLING down by offering "Flash Sales" that only stick around for a paltry 8 hours or less with the text "Short Deals. Get 'em while they last!" Then it really turn the screws by posting a countdown timer next to each deal.

It's a very well established fact that humans hate losing choices once we perceive having them. Any other day you might not buy Super Street Fighter IV even for ten bucks, but threaten to raise the price on you in six more hours and suddenly people are considering it for a lot more because we're simply averse to losing the chance to get it for cheap.
What? You're saying that Valve, a business, is trying to actually manipulate us into spending more money than we normally would rather than selflessly saving us money for no gain of their own?

I never buy anything from a sale that isn't on my 'list' which is pretty well defined. All a sale does is bring forward the purchase date.

And I get a better buzz not buying something than buying... dunno why... I don't think I have any hebrew dna...

Pretty cool list, Kris P.

Also this steam sale is shit so far. Absolutely nothing I want to get now that I have this RPG classic.
Decline of Steam - only arcades and shooters on sale.

Should be good to stay that way too. You're not going to find something better for the PC.

I wouldn't call it a better buzz myself but I take slight satisfaction in being stoically unmoved by these paltry 75% bargains

give me ludicrous savings mr newell, it shall take no less to move me into purchasing from your digital stock

I was a beta tester for that. Only thing I remembered liking was the remix of the One Must Fall theme. And even that wasn't as good as the original.

Fuck, that and 4D Boxing. All PC fighting games need campaign modes where you improve your fighter.

Heh, here we have boxed copies of KOTOR for the same price...old skool BRO!

Sniff...you've just gone up 100 notches in my estimation MHC. To this day there hasn't been a better boxing game for the PC that really had the tactics and the whole feeling of being clobbered down. Fuck, it even had a first person mode! With all of the technology available today why has there never been a serious attempt at a decent PC boxing game for 22 years?

Jack, you are the biggest poser on earth. Now why would one join the Steam summer camp group, I wonder?

Chris Taylor from Total Annihilation/Supreme Commander worked on design and programming for that :salute:

the secret robot special move upgrades and tournament opponents are just the icing on the cake.

also for the longest time before getting the internet I was puzzled by how you couldn't duplicate the world champ's color scheme but then after finding the messageboards I discovered that it was because they gave him manually hex-edited colors

Yeah I'm fucking in buyer's remorse regarding a lot of games. I bought anno 2070 at full price, and I guess I enjoyed it but I just never play the damn game. Portal 2 is 5 dollars? I spent 120 dollars on it, one for myself and one as a birthday present for someone else. FIVE DOLLARS????

I've just been burned too many times by paying full price. A few months ago I just decided to pirate until a game goes on sale because I'm tired of feeling regret. There are some games I don't regret paying full price for, but they are exclusively games that didn't start out at 60 dollars.

The problem is one of design not optimization.
No, it's not a problem of design. It's a problem of you just don't like that type of game. Assuming that because you don't like that whole genre then it is bad design is skyway level retardation.

Any reason to want Steam badges? Do I get a free game of my choice out of a it, or a hooker delivered to my door for whoring myself out in their little community game?

Anyway, Wrath of the Lamb for less than 1 brouzouf. Good deal, I guess. Probably end of sale for me.

Edit: MHC, I don't mind stealing lods of emone with people.

My bad, I forgot pop-a-mole became mainstream here.

Not sure if the high-res patches work on the Steam version of KOTOR. The boxed copy is worth having for the cover art anyway, they did a great job with that (and KOTOR 2 too).

Reconstructed HD version by the original composer:

There seems to be little point otherwise. Never know with these Nintendo kids though.
