Listening to the OMF 2097 themes brought tears to my eye (ive had a few). When I was little it was all about Raptor: Call of the Shadows and OMF 2097 (and Sonic and Mortal Kombat 2). I fucking adore those games. It's great because it's a nostalgia kick, but they're still good games

I played with some CDS bros once or twice and had a good time in Payday, but since I don't hang out in CDS chat much I generally don't think about it.

That, and I mainly play singleplayer shit anyway. Might have to pop my head in to CDS when we're doing some games to see if any Codexers wanna join in the emone.

I haven't checked the CDS in a couple of months since little of value happened there. I'm always happy to play Payday or other stuff though.

Football Manager on flash sale. Fuck fuck fuck. This is too quick... Buy or no buy?
You know it will be superseded in a few months...

Yeah that's always the problem with sports management or simulation games. By the time they finally fix the bugs and update the rosters, the next season has arrived. That's why I prefer the rare games in historical settings like Grand Prix Legends or F1 99-02. They never get 'old'.

(OMF 2097) This is a remix of the Power Plant theme. It's pretty old, but it's one of the few techno songs I've ever liked. I think this guy did a good job.

Speaking of technotracks in games. What the fuck happened with them? Command & Conquer, Red Alert, Fury3, Hellbender, Terminal Velocity, all the FPS of the era etc. all fucking tore the speakers from the walls and created earthquakes and got you so fucking pumped! Now everything has to have a flaccid orchestral score to provide some pseudo gravitas. Even fucking soundtracks declined to provide a safe casual experience...

But at more than 6 times the price. I think the purchase was justified.

Yeah, you got to buy it sometime. Although, in your place, I would feel entitled to a free copy of the next version when it comes out. (available at your favorite free software site)

Yeah, it's ok. In such games it's 95% incremental changes year on year anyway. Big changes like CM4 and the new switch to 3D in recent years are the ones to really look out for. I used to love FM in it's earlier CM guise but I just can't get into it anymore. Too complicated and too many tedious things, not to mention that if you play with a few major leagues it takes forever to number crunch a season. I prefer the EA FIFA manager series now. Simpler, a lot slicker and now almost as accurate as FM for the most part.

Heathen! I also actually preferred the CM days. I'm not a big fan of the FM tactics complications, I prefer just throwing one of the defaults in there. I even had fun with the first EA manager, was released around 2000 or so. Same time I think as the F1 manager, which was also loads of fun.

F1 manager was ridiculously easy and didn't even have weather changes! says a lot about the potential that even with these crippling faults I enjoyed it. Shame that EA let the license lapse soon after and didn't bother with such games anymore. A lot better was the Microprose version from the mid 90's. F1 seems perfect for a proper licensed manager game but no-one bothers apart from the odd Kraut dev with fake rosters and shitty AI. You should give the new EA managers a 'demo'. They actually simulate results now rather than randomly pulling scores like back then. The whole presentation and experience is also more fun than the dour numbers game of FM.

CM 00/01 was the best

That was the sweetspot between functionality, depth and gameplay.(CM3 was/is god)

F1 manager was ridiculously easy. If you couldn't take Minardi to the top in your second year, you are doing something wrong. Still fun though.

I might try one of the Fifa ones again. I tried one some time ago, probably around 09, and it had some nice automation options - allowing you to focus on what you want.

Yeah F1...the only way to have any sort of challenge at least for one season was to pick a minnow. The problem was that there was no great vehicle development system. Everything worked on the 'level' principle where each subsequent part that cost more was automatically better the previous and would add to the car. No real problems of integration or the reality that changing one thing for the better can actually ruin the balance or aerodynamics of the car and make it worse.

As for FIFA Man, yeah you should...'demo' it first of course to see if it floats your boat. Automation is good in it as well, a lot easier to get going and interfere with than FM. I was actually really surprised at the lack of too many 'WTF?' moments. Feedback is also pretty good about the effects of training and tactics unlike in the past or with FM at times.

Football Manager is a game that baffles me. I have a double disadvantage:
1) I'm American, so I can recognize that soccer is boring
2) I'm a nerd, so I think sports in general are not that interesting

Yet this game secures the #1 spot on Steam's list of games being played on most days. I don't really know what to think, besides that Europlebs and HuheuhePlebs are the biggest part of the lowest common denominator.

Isn't that the one that was made freeware?
That one, or 01/02, not sure

CM01/02 It's the same thing basically.

Here it is:

Edit: Motherfucker! That version is still getting roster updates! 2012 season and more here:

Time to dust off the P4! YEEAHH!!!

Finally I can get my CM fix and not wait half a day for the preseason to finish.

Any reason to want Steam badges? Do I get a free game of my choice out of a it, or a hooker delivered to my door for whoring myself out in their little community game?

Well one is when you put your real name so you get a free Identify Theft (real name plus CC information, AWESOME) and maybe a mass murder stalker.

You don't have to put a real name, any string will do. Same as with facebook.
