Five years from now Valve flip-flops and Cow commits suicide.

Is that the full complete set of Myst-like games?

Only of those developed by Cyan, the original Myst devs. There is no Myst III: Exile there, for example. Still it's worth a purchase if you don't already own realMYST, Riven or Uru and/or feel like supporting Cyan.

Not a sale, but the God-Gaben of Mankind talking about sales. And Russians.

Russian localizing companies (1C, Softprom, Akella) don't sell boxed versions of PC games. Instead, you can buy a jewel case CD with the game and activation code for the ruble/hryvnia equivalent of 15 or 25$, depending on the game's publisher. Many of these games come with Steam, and you are required to activate the game through Steam before you can play it, as the activation code given with the CD only works there.

I wonder how that factors into their research, because I know Russians and let me tell you - they really do pirate everything they can. They also don't give a shit about promotions and DLC - most just finish a game once and forget about it, then pirate the GOTY edition when it's out. In fact, the only time your average Russian gamer would buy a game is if it had coop or multiplayer functionality, and not the Bioshock/Dead Space 2 type multiplayer, either - I'm talking about CoD-level multiplayer community or Borderlands-type coop.

So in a way, Newell is right - it is about the service rather than the price. But I seriously doubt the kind of conclusions a publisher reading this might draw are necessarily (or at all) the right ones.

Orcs Must Die DLC is just a bunch of items. Really hate it when tower defense games do that. At least Defense Grid made new maps.

So... The First Templar is on sale today. Is it any good? Combat, story, level design -- anything good at all?

Not a deal, but apparently Vic Davis of Cryptic Comet fame tried to get Armageddon Empires on Steam and was rejected.
WHY GABEN, WHY. I ONLY WANTED TO BUY HIS GAMES ON STEAM. PROBABLY WITH A GOOD DISCOUNT.

He is consoling everyone with a 50% discount on all his games however.
Over the years I’ve gotten quite a few emails asking if or when my games will be on Steam. I have to admit that I have felt very ambivalent about the whole thing because on the one hand I really like selling direct and cutting out the middle man but on the other hand I know a lot of devs who have had the mon$y hat put on their heads via selling on Steam. The only thing Steam has ever given me so far is that empty feeling in the gut as I have watched them deflate indie software prices almost single handed. But today I got the ubiquitous “Not a good fit” rejection letter that I so richly deserved for my moment of weakness last week when I submitted Armageddon Empires for consideration on Steam thinking that I too might look good in a money hat. Oh Well.

But it inspired me to try and make something out of this and burn my ships just like Cortez did and set off for the interior and fortune and glory. So I am going to fight fire with fire and launch a preemptive strike on Steam’s Xmas sale and do a 50% off all my games NEVER GOING TO BE ON STEAM sale. You can get the discount by entering this code when you check out

NEVERONSTEAM

The Sale is going to last 2 weeks. Please spread this news around on any board or watering hole that you frequent that might have a musty old turn based grog hanging out in close proximity.

NOTE: The 50% discount only applies to the individual games and not the already discounted bundle of SI & AE.

You cannot fight the Gay Ben! In other news, Trine 2 is available for preorder and this time they've priced it at a reasonable $15 (versus the $40 or so Trine 1 started out at). No discount but you do get access to the beta.

Nice move from Vic Davis. I had bought Solium Infernum at full price but I may buy it for someone else who is on the fence and likes boardgames.

Hm, if other Codexers pick up that game, we may try to start a Codex Newbie game :D
