GOG/Steam have official patches.

AI, thinker: https://github.com/induktio/thinker
( on top of AI it also has Scient 2.0 and pracx patches integrated and some features of Ytzi's patch, plus few additional bugfixes, UI improvement and gameplay balance mods of it's own, you don't need any other patches when you install it )

For unofficial patches, if you want to play with vanilla AI:
Bugfixes, Scient 2.1: https://github.com/DrazharLn/scient-unofficial-smacx-patch
UI and rendering, pracx: https://github.com/drazharln/pracx

AI / gameplay, SMACX - The will to Power: https://github.com/tnevolin/thinker-doer
( extensive gameplay mod built on top of older thinker release )

No mentioning me? Why, I feel positively insulted! Neglected! Unbeloved! Ungiven respect for my seniority in the TURN! community, even.

Any opinions on bug fixes or mods to play? Rules and regulations? Banned SPs and whatnot. A map we're not all overly familiar with would be nice, and if so a house rule to not playtest it
We usually play Huge Map of Planet, through after some of the newest mods have showed an even bigger map size, I wish we had an even bigger Map of Planet.

There's a lot of cool old maps, we could use these too.

Kalin once told me you are unreliable with the TURN...

An even bigger map of planet would be cool (with more rock and lots more fungus!). But also a bit mad in terms of dragging the game out, emphasizing base sprawl and debuffing some factions.
The only other map I really like was one called Glorious Map

I tried emailing troy and kalin on the addresses from last game, they should also have a bit of seniority.
In times long ago Kalin was interested in playing a normal or even small size map of planet with standard tech tree.

I have a player that should be very familiar with the game who is interested in playing University. He's in the US so maybe that's good for the TURN schedule as well. He has made an account and his post is awaiting moderator confirmation.

So that's maybe 6 players so far.

Thoughts on crawlers? Banned? ~Unlocked from the start?~
If we play on a big map I think I'd rather play without them

Well I was unreliable for a while due to reasons, and that was only occasional. Things are a lot different nowadays.

I don't consider Huge Map of Planet very large, through it's usually better in that regard than most randomly-generated maps. Depending on spawns, you can get 2120 wars easily.

I've started playing Alien Crossfire and I don't quite understand how to use the resonance laser. Is it only effective against mind worms, or can I make units do psychic attacks with it?
Only against psychic units, IIRC. It gives the unit a 25% bonus to attack, so it just makes the unit more versatile.

How do I fight needlejet spam? I'm playing as Usurpers and the Caretakers have a lot of them. They just are killing my forces and AAA doesn't work that well because they are too passive but they are killing my air superiority jets and choppers. The enemy jets only have 1 armour, so should I just give the choppers and air sup jets lasers and not bother with giving them the best gun? Or does it work differently for air combat?

If they already have the numbers on you, then you won't be able to to the attack attrition strategy.

Armour definitely helps, but put them on defensive jets (i.e., 1 attack jets) to bring the cost down. However, armour always lags attack, so you are always at a disadvantage. On the ground, you get defensive bonuses that helps a lot. In the air, you receive less bonuses, so it could be a losing proposition.

Both of these are dependent on you being on tech parity. If the enemy has a higher tech than you, aim for psi armour and attack. That will being things back to relative parity.

So I'm running Police and I have Longevity vaccine built and I make it a point to put children's creche everywhere. If I go Planned will my economy just die? Drones from bureaucracy probably won't matter because the vaccine takes care of that, but my efficiency score is going to suck horribly.

I don't believe I have ever run Police, so I can tell you that you will survive without it. Planned is the one I usually go for early-mid game. However, I would be in a Democracy by then, so that offsets the efficiency hit.

Planned, Democracy, Knowledge are my default policies.

In your case, you might want to think about Green for the +2 Planet (and maybe Power for the +2 Morale) and pump out Locusts and Mindworms to help with the needlejet spam.

That's the weird thing, they all vanished. I think the pirates are at war them too so they are all dead or something. I just started hitting his cities with cruise missles and deployed jump troops with interceptor, chopper and AA rover support.

Choppers are one attack per turn, right? It has been years since I played it, but I don't recall leaning on choppers heavily. When you are swarmed with 1 armour squishies, units that can attack multiple times a round is a good counter.

Choppers can do multiple attacks, it's needlejets that can't.

You can do it to see the effects then switch back the same turn at no cost.
