Not in comparison with 6 or 7 but it's still nice to know beforehand that weapon crafting is a thing.

I always played with a standard party. I think I only once tried bishop and I don't recall when I class changed on that particular run. All these years, maybe I should go back and give either of those two classes a look (it is a relatively short game). I was probably being bigoted. Didn't want some assassin nor goody goody snob in my party. Bishop was pushing it (i think i sent him solo to convert mobs and he was slain). My regular party walked past his corpse and never retrieved him. I prolly RP'd too much those days. I also randomly rolled how far I would go then return back up. I know I numbered the rooms per level but I can't find those notes.

The shit you do when you only have a few games.

The stat loss thing in early Wiz was supposed to be not such a big deal, because programmatically a stat was only supposed to drop 16.7% of the time or something. Something about the DOS port was never quite right and that version features constant stat losses. Playing the original Apple ][ version on an emulator should avoid this.

Gilgamesh is known to be the worst cook, with many regulars nicknaming his mutton stew the ‘daily poison’.

Is there a way to reorganize the character roster? Look at the fucked up list I have to traverse every time I need to form a party. I reimported the thief from Wiz2 and now she's at the top of the list, then I imported an evil party from Wiz1 and the whole fucking thing is all out of whack. Before I could just hit ABCDEF for Serling, Serena, Antos, Pepper, Augustine, and Penumbra, but now look at it.

No. The only way to reorganize them is to delete some characters. Hex editing should help as well.
All I know when I finally get around to playing Wizardry I will definitely get advice and tips from people on this thread
I dont want to play a game for hours and realize I selected the "wrong " class and the game becomes unnecessarily hard and frustrating
There is no wrong classes or races in Wizardry 1.
Just take a dozen sheets of graph paper and a pencil. That's all.

I remember having to deal with that. The way I handled it was to write down my different party formations on a note so I could quickly just type the letters without having to think about it every time I wanted to resume my game

I did the same thing to memorize key combinations for mixing reagents in Ultima. Not a bad idea at all.

Wizardry 3 is rough. The grind at the beginning of the game is insane, and my fighters keep missing all their attacks. First fighter has 9 agility, the other 14. And it could get worse depending on my luck. I might have to use an editor depending on how bad it gets. How tough is this game's final boss? Wiz2 didn't even have a final boss.

No final boss in this one either if I remember right.. just a puzzle that can really fuck you if you mess up making you go through a good portion of the game again. Best of luck to you.

My thief's agility and luck is so low that simply inspecting chests often triggers alarms and gas bombs. Seriously considering cheating with a character editor at this point.

Can the wisemen of the Codex clarify the one question for me: what was the degree of D.W.Bradley's participation in Wizardry 8 initial design? Is there any info left about this?

I would assume he had no participation at all. He left Sir-Tech even before the Stones of Arnhem debacle.

I'm reading the thread about that right now. I don't know how much of it's true but it's fucking hilarious. I'm gonna save all of Cleve's posts as reference for writing; the dude's prose is incredible, he can really paint a picture.

I got an Apple II emulator working for Nox Archaist, and now I'm kicking myself for not just playing the Apple II versions of Wizardry 1-3. I've heard that those versions are slow. Are the DOS versions really that much faster?

I think the only major speed difference would be due to emulated disk access speed, which IIRC you can adjust.

What you would have to deal with, though:
--Old school interface with maze only showing in top quarter of the screen, no auto-complete for spell names, IIRC if you make a typo the game tells you nothing and just doesn't cast it.
--In this version, anyone can cast spells in the surprise round. Works great if it's you doing the surprising, otherwise way better chance of a party wipe on the lower levels.
--The stat increases/decreases at level-ups actually fucking work like they're supposed to, which is good.

That's that. Word to the wise: do not be a retard like me, and do not play the DOS versions of the Llylgamyn Trilogy. Horrific, painful fucking experience, and the only game I genuinely enjoyed was the first one.

Onwards to Wizardry 4. I really think there's no possible way Wiz4 can be as painful as Wiz3, despite its infamy, but I guess I'll find out...

Good luck with Wiz4, it's obviously very different and frustrating in new and exciting ways compared to the others.

You don't really have to worry about versions with Wiz4 at least in regards to the stupid stat bug, since you don't follow the usual mechanics for levelups and attribute changes as the other games (and honestly I'm not sure if they even count in this game for anything other than window dressing).
