Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
Thief 2 is the best in the series, with Dark Project right behind.
And both games are way ahead of any other stealth games the game industry has ever produced, and they're some of the best games ever made regardless of genre, so who cares which one is better. Thi4f isn't even going to reach a fraction of their quality.

Oh btw guyses, there's one more thing in there, but hidden.

Hover your mouse over the pretty picture of a bending guard and Garrett whacking him or whatever:

This is a third-person 'takedown cam'. Somebody working at Eidos Montreal realised I was an old man who adored the first two Thief games and immediately suspected that I'd think that 'takedown cams are rubbish'. I nodded in agreement.

Careful, JC. Maybe you should introduce your lethal takedown :troll:

God, RPS is really weird these days. I'm doing a PhD in the humanities and we'd throw this out any day as a hopelessly confused mess that clearly never got an edit.

Also, I don't even know why you'd get rid of taffer. It's one thing to plug in iconic aspects of the old games everywhere and dilute it in the process, it's another thing to just drop it for no reason whatsoever. What, it costs more money if actors have to say strange words?

What JarlFrank said. I do prefer Thief 1 over Thief 2 but they're both masterpieces.
Meh, that preview was okay, but their reason for third-person is AGAIN ridiculous and lame.

No mention of how the sounds design is, though.
As for sound, I spoke about that a little in the
interview. It’s possible to use noises to distract
guards but Garrett’s found some soft soles this
time around and doesn’t start stomping around
and making noise when he’s on a hard floor.
That aspect may change apparently.
LOL; good job ruining the only thing that could make the game hard (but thief veterans know exactly what they can get away with and run by default anyway).

?

I haven't bothered with RPS since they wrote a glowing review of Skyrim claiming it was better than Morrowind in every way. :smug:

Clearly they've decided sucking corporate cock is the way of the future for themselves.

It would actually be interesting to replace the tap-dancing shoes with less noisy ones, but still have surface affect sound - including some surfaces that always make a sound no matter how slow you go (like dry fallen leaves or something).

They're probably going to remove sound when walking completely though so you're SUPER-SILENT even when running over a creaky wooden floor.

More articles coming out now:

Thief is played from a first-person perspective, although the game will shift to third-person when Garrett scales walls or goes into combat.

To this end, Garrett has been equipped with some impressive abilities, including being able to peek around corners or objects without being spotted, and slow down hand-to-hand combat in order to pick specific parts of your enemy's body to target.

Garrett has Lara Croft's annoying habit of talking about what he's doing in such a way that it spoils moments of discovery in favour of making sure you know exactly what to do.

Garrett also digs out his old blackjack, useful for clobbering guards (either in the face during fights or on the back of the head to avoid them) and this time it's going to be upgradeable, as will your Focus abilities

How the fuck do you upgrade a fucking blackjack? What the fuck is this shit?

The new Thief makes obvious concessions to players who have been brought up on gaming in the nine years since Deadly Shadows - for instance, when you're navigating narrow beams you will be guided along them automatically and dismounting will require you to press a button.

There's probably going to be an upgrade where your footsteps make no noise.

If you can peak around corners without being spotted, it's pretty much the same as going into third person cover.

It our interpretation of what is Thief. The original Thief had more of a magical feel. This is more mystical.

But it appears Eidos Montreal is definitely trying to cater to old-school Thief fans, and that's only a good thing.

This article is based on a press trip to Eidos Montreal's offices in Canada. Square Enix paid for travel and accommodation.
And to think I was starting to lose faith in game journalism...

Thief 2 is the best in the series, with Dark Project right behind.

You know, I'm doing a full series playthrough currently, which means replaying Thief Gold and going through Thief 2 (played few missions before, never finished) and Thief 3 (just started this, never touched before). By the middle of Thief 2 I was thinking it's unquestionably better than 1. But then by the end I was exhausted by it in the way I wasn't exhausted by 1 ever, to the point of not having any fun at all with last mission. So now I'm not so sure. What I do know is that I'll definitely be replaying Thief Gold yet again eventually, but I might not do the same with Thief 2 (will have to reinstall it to try those FM's though). Also, I'm quite liking Thief 3 so far, even though controls are somewhat clunkier.

The thing is, Casing the Joint and Masks are very redundant, and they're both big missions with lots to do. The fact that they're 90% identical really emphasizes that boredom feel, at least for me. Kidnap is also a very badly designed mission, in my opinion. I love Soulforge but it's a beast and it takes hours to finish.

Thief 2 has way more FMs than the other games, so you should definitely keep it.

I enjoyed TG more than T2, but Thief Gold has the Thieve's Guild mission, which was one of the most frustrating missions in the series. I still can't say whether I enjoyed it or not, but at the end of it I felt exhausted and I really can't say I was sad it ended. I probably spent twice the time I should have on it, simply because navigating that labyrinth was such a nightmare. When I finally got to the safe, I realised I didn't have the key and had to go back into that labyrinth to find it.

FMs are the reason ThiefG and Thief2 are *always* installed on my machine. Always.
When I recently had to reinstall my system due to some error on my system partition, those two games (and DarkLoader) were actually the first things I installed right after all the system drivers. :P

Anyone that redirects his hate torwards Thief 2 because of stupid correlations taken out of his ass should just die in a fire. For fucks sake, you're as retarded as THI4F devs and have tastes as shitty as them if you really think T2 ruined anything. The game had a different take on the supernatural side of that universe, it didn't removed it. Thief as a series is based on the balance of powers in the City, like a cycle. First game was pagan's ascension, second was hammerite's (or their more fanatic brothers, mechanists), third was Keeper's. Hence their designs based around each game's premise.

Also, notice that whenever one of these forces becomes big, it collapses soon after and balance is somewhat restored. If this isn't a brilliantly thought series, I don't know what you'd praise. CoD maybe.

I don't care that much about Thief lore. Level design and atmosphere is what draw me in in these games, where story is just flavor. So i put Thief gold above T2 because the levels in TG was more pleasant and atmospheric on average than the levels in T2.

Ah, here is where things go to hell. Eidos Montreal is basing their design decisions on the 'general consensus' that Thief 2 is better than Thief 1. I'll agree that Thief 2 is better than Thief 1
I only played Thief Gold but i don't think this is true. If you take all the extra levels in TG and the level improvements, Thief 1 is still better overall.

(although you said it yourself)

How is this an improvement?

I prefer the Dark Project version over Gold. The additional missions are IMO still more or less an afterthought and drag the storyline of perfect pacing and length. Plus Lost City atmosphere was ruined.

Is this Mage tower level(Edit: nope its Lost city)? I liked that level. My favorite is Song of the caverns, and i like Thief's guild too. Though i hated Lost City, both in TG and T2.
