That's not really how it works.
I pirated Bioshock: Infinite, got sick of it after 2 hours and told all my friends that the game was utter shit and anyone who even mentioned in anything other than a negative light is a total fag. That surely resulted in a few lost sales.

This is not how it works either. This game sold millions. I bet a lot of other people that pirated it praised it. And maybe even bought themselves. Maybe a friend of your just to prove he is not a total fag, buys the game just to mention it in a negative light, but legally.

Too many assumptions for a coherent argument, hence you basically don't know how it works either.

Yes I don't know. Never intended to give the impression I know.

Daniel Windfeld Schmidt: Today's gamers are a lot less patient. They expect a lot more from the developers in terms of features and so on. Even for menus that are easy to use. For a lot of things that weren't as extensively developed back in the day. For example: control inputs.

It took a while to learn the complex controls. Numbers 1,2,3,4... There were different types of peeking: peeking forward, peeking sideways, peeking upside down... They had all these things that were very complex and it worked for the hardcore gamers, but a lot of people backed off early on because it was very difficult [to learn]. So our focus has been to say, "we want the same amount of challenge, but within the game and not within the inputs." I don't personally have the patience to learn the super, super old games and all their fidelities and hard-learned lessons. I want it to be more streamlined.

And I'm a pretty hardcore player. But I want the challenge to be in the game and this is something that with today's technology we can do. What we don't want to lose is the hardcore fans. We don't want to alienate; the fact is you can play our game (on really high) difficultly.

This is standard PR speak, but cracks me up every time:

It worked for the hardcore gamers...
I don't personally have the patience....
And I'm a pretty hardcore player.

In other words, he's only 'hardcore' insofar as he gets to get rid of everything they like.

The new visual fidelity was key in nudging the team towards Garrett’s buckled leather. “With the new power of the platform today, we can really go deep with the shaders,” explains Cantin. “We can almost say ‘what type of leather do we want?’ and it will be exactly that.” If that gives anyone else flashbacks to mixing seven subtle varieties of brown while painting a Warhammer army, Cantin’s team took meticulousness even further. “We made real costumes,” he says, “then lit them to see how [the leather] would react to the lighting.”

AAA development, folks.

Except they shouldn't be focusing on such bullshit. They should be focusing on making the actual gameplay the best it can be.

Not that that's technically possible, with the shitty gameplay they're talking about, but it just shows where their focus for the entire game lies.

This is what happens when you contract fashion designers to make games. I knew that the gamming industry was full of "I wannabe a movie director but Hollywood don't want me" types but frustrated fashion designers, that is new...

“As far as Eidos Montreal are concerned, this is the same Garrett as before.”

Yeah, at least the commenters aren't on their knees.

Focus is a temporary abilities boost that, for a few seconds, makes Garrett better at everything. He can see things others can’t – switches for secret passages, chandeliers that might crush guards – take down several attackers in a few seconds, and swiftly snatch loot. Activating Focus drains a nonrecharging resource with the aim of limiting players to tactical, essential uses, but it’s still a move away from the stern old formula of patience and perfection – a get-out-of-jail-for-a-chunk- of-this-blue-bar card.

And so it will be again, the only changes to this particular pillar being an idiomatic refresh of the arrow types (it’s now dry ice, rather than water, that extinguishes torches) and, servicing one of the development team’s wider concerns, stress-testing the ammo types for plausibility. “We worked really hard on the credibility of those things,” says Cantin, “especially that layer of magic and mysticism. We still have some of those [ammo types], like fire for example, but now balanced so we’ll believe in it a little more.”

Always a good sign when you're implementing mechanics based on two diametrically opposed philosophies. One the one hand they are spending large amounts of resources on reworking the bow and arrows to be whatever they say is more realistic, and experimenting with real leather outfits to get the lighting right; and on the other, they give the player magical investigation vision so they don't get frustrated when they actually have to stop for a second and look for things.

Hi Eidos Montreal. Can you please justify both to your fans and shareholders why you are wasting thousands of dollars contracting companies to produce custom-made leather outfits so you can observe what shaders to use, instead of using that money to actually make the gameplay better? Can you also please explain how this is supposed to amount to more sales, instead of just being a blatant waste of time and money by your art department?

As far as Eidos Montreal is concerned it is a good investment
