Yu-Gi-Oh: Duel Monsters has been translated

https://www.romhacking.net/translations/6337/

It's the first game in the *Duel Monsters* series for the various Game Boy Systems. You might have come across the series before (I did), like for example: Dark Duel Stories on GBC as well as The Sacred Cards and Reshef of Destruction on GBA.

Anyone tried it? How does it compare with the SNES version of that game? And MMX3 for the DS? That's the second remake of MMX2 so far.
I didn't play the SNES version, but did read that they added a bunch of wanted monsters (and 4 new tanks) for the remake. I played the remake earlier this year with a combination of retroarch's auto translate thing and consulting metalmaniax.com and it was extremely similar mechanically to 3, with all of the QoL changes added in.

A whole bunch of auto-translated differences between SNES and DS versions from https://metalmaniax.com/index.php?MM2R/FAQ#n3753ea5 :

What is the difference from the SFC version?
  • Since the basic engine is the same as MM3, many of them have the same dots.
However, the image quality, sound quality, and effects are all more advanced than 3.
    • Other systems are also inherited from MM3. (Nuka's bar, etc.)
      • Since it became possible to make characters, the main character could be a profession other than a hunter.
A three-person party is also possible when entering the Bay Bridge.
In addition, with the newly added lap play privilege, change the main character and that lap it is possible to adjust the difficulty level in .
    • "Licking movement", which was unpopular with MM3, is now possible.
      • Due to the influence of MM3, Maria's relics have been changed to "BS controller → i goggles".
  • The map has become one size larger, and various products sold in stores have changed.
Various facilities have been added or relocated around Delta Rio and Isla Porto.
However, due to a specific quest order
The next destination is also shown in the MAP unexplored area, so it is hard to get lost.
    • The most significant impact is the relocation of the Batou Research Institute, which has moved significantly from [Deskles West → Wind Power Plant West].
(The point that you will be able to go after getting the ship remains the same)
      • In addition, [completion of the world map], which was not possible with the old work, is now possible, and there are titles associated with it.
  • Buggy and tanks (except for some) can now be used by multiple people and can be operated by multiple people.
When riding a large number of people, only the driving level of the character closer to the beginning is reflected.
    • Also, because it is MM3 compliant, the number of holes for mounting weapons has been increased to [3 → 5].
However, the hole 1 of the tank system is basically two choices of [free cannon type or unique armament] except for the zero of the first implementation this time.
  • Four cars such as a motorcycle (specifications are the same as MM3) have been added.
In addition, the purchase of rental tanks will be lifted by clearing the event.
(Because it is registered in the No. 11 frame of owned car, only one car can be changed.)
  • A both human and tank weapons large number of rapid fire weapons have been added to .
Since the rush characteristics added in MM3 are still alive, the battle balance has changed drastically to the extent that it is completely different.
Also, for this reason, the enemy side has also been considerably strengthened.
In other sober places, in the the attributes of each weapon, which were unclear old work, are now clearly stated.
    • [Super remodeling] and [Communication trading of items] added in MM3 will also be continued. With a slight specification change, it is even easier to use.
In addition to them, the new system [Tachyon Teleporter] can be linked with MM3.
On the other hand, [Communication Battle] has been deleted.
(Do you mean that you can substitute the speedrun play with the glittering by the LOVE machine?)
  • "Monster picture book", "Human equipment picture book", "Car equipment picture book" have been added.
It seems that the monster pictorial book is enthusiastic that you can also see battle animation.
(However, there are many mask data that are not displayed here either.
The battle animation also contains the death data as it is, and on the contrary, there are some that are not recorded, so it is a little rough.)
In addition, the MM3 equipment transferred by the above-mentioned TACHYON teleporter is also registered in a separate frame.
  • A subjob system has been added.
In terms of time, at the end of the beginning of the game, you can talk to the old man on the 2nd floor of the bar Thirsty.
The ban will be lifted if you use "potential headphones".
(Since this is not confiscated during the lap, once it is used, the ban has been lifted from the beginning after the second lap)
    • Equipment is only items derived from the main job, and sub-jobs use only that special skill.
(In addition, although it is limited to moving, it is you can also use the acquisition skills of sub-jobs that are not currently specified a kind design that )
Sub-jobs can be freely changed anywhere on the move, so make fine adjustments according to your preference.
      • With the hunter's new skill "Decoy", it is now possible to select enemies that appear to some extent.
(Including random encounter type bounty neck)
However, be careful as it cannot be used on the water.
  • The 4th person has 3 types of dogs + 3 types of gold-eating insects.
Dogs have the appearance of [Mameshiba, Doberman, White Akita Inu], and gold-eating insects have the appearance of [drums, refrigerators, chests of drawers].
  • Due to a change in the way landmine detectors are obtained, the time to obtain them has been significantly advanced.
Depending on how you do it, you can get it within 5 minutes from the start of the game (a new camp near Mad).
    (And for free)
  • What a swan is added to the ship for water movement.
You can involve the inhabitants to fight the water bounty or follow the dog system and transfer.
If you use a transfer machine, you can also perform a pseudo-drifting play called [Clear the game by leaving it on the shore of Bizarre Island].
    • Even if you perform "Dog System → Swan" after operation, the transfer destination will not change and you will be moved to the original sandy beach.
      • If it is wiped out while sailing, it is necessary to salvage like the Nemesis, but after that ...
  • The specification change makes it easier to achieve the "target of the week".
On the other hand, for some reason, you may be presented with a bounty neck that should have only one.
    (Of course not possible)
    • Most of the designations are "monsters that appear near the hunter's office", but there are some exceptions.
Also, because the number of subjugation is roughly specified by the current level and the strength of the specified monster.
When trying to subdue a weak monster with a high level character
Please note that you will be required to subdue an extraordinary number such as 100 or 200.
(Example: If you talk to Mad's hunter office with a Lv999 character, you may be asked for 999 baby mellows)
  • The specifications of the title system have also changed.
If you have already acquired it, you can give it your favorite title.
(As before, there is no production when learning the title, so be careful)
  • The bounty head now breaks in during the battle with Zako (and the music changes).
Be careful in the habitat as not only random encounter type but also symbol type bounty necks may invade.
    • Also, some MM3 bounties have been added as Zako enemies.
Basically, it is stronger than other spawning enemies, but it has a unique drop item.
  • By using the consumable in-vehicle tool "Camp Kit", it is possible to save anywhere.
The ban on purchases will be lifted after the middle stage, but it is very easy to examine the prize money drop items.
  • It ’s a “LOVE machine” whose performance changes by exchanging parts.
that the list of effects is displayed, it is Now very easy to use.
The breakdown has also changed slightly.
    • In addition, the item "Quantum Doll" of the same type that appeared in MM3 is being continuously thrown in another form.
  • About two more lover candidates, which were only Irit and Marilyn in the old work, have been added.
(Maybe it's a retrofit, but it doesn't seem to fit the world view a little)
You need to clear the lovers event, but you can also give interior goods to their homes.
    • In addition, "Marilyn's mode switching", which was not possible in the previous work, has been changed to an optional formula.
With this, you can flirt even after a certain event.
  • The reconstruction stage of the town of Mad has changed.
In addition, the version upgrade of Dr. Minchi Research Institute has been abolished, the specifications of the gum shop have been changed, and the late shop has been deleted.
    • On the other hand, the water quality deterioration related to Melttown remains unchanged without being picked up.
Is that okay, that town ...
  • Due to a change in the repair-related specifications , I can no longer receive repair instructions from Grandpa Nile.
On the other hand, free repairs are continuing.
  • Since the SE specifications are now MM3 compliant, the usability is completely different.
Also, a large number of tank weapons with an infinite number of bullets have been added.
    • In detail, the specifications of the interception SE have also changed.
As with conventional weapons, it can now be replenished with a full tank service, making it easier to handle.
  • The race breakdown of defeated monsters can no longer be confirmed.
In addition, "Unidentifiable", which was a very small number in the old work, has been deleted, and "UMA" (applicable to walls, limestone bullets, night stalker, etc.) has been added.
In addition, the number of "motorcycles" added from MM3 has decreased sharply, and only zombie riders are available.
    • By the way, the skateboard zombie has been changed to [Unidentifiable → Bio-based].
While BGM was added, the old BGM "Daddy is a tool shop" was deleted for some reason.
For this reason, the atmosphere of "Sorrowful Man's House" and "Philosophy Pond" has changed considerably.
(Changed to "Ernino" and "Ayakashi" respectively.
The latter is a new song that has not been recorded in the jukebox during the game, and the song title can be confirmed only on the soundtrack CD.)
  • Also, the old "Ending" and "Staff Roll" have been changed to completely different new songs.
Other songs have been renamed, such as "Battle with the Inquirer → WANTED!" And "Animal Parade → Bang Bang with Tanks!".
(The "Animal Parade" in this work is a special song for the Gekogeko Daisakusen, and is completely different from the old one.)
    • Other BGMs also have strangely faster tempos due to sound source changes and modern arrangements.
In some cases, the sound has lost its depth and the atmosphere has become completely different.
(Example: "Incoming" at the start of battle is changed from 4 beats to 3 beats)
  • Also, because the specifications of the jukebox have changed, the "matching hand function" has been deleted.

I wouldn't call the GBA version of Metal Max 2 a *remake*. It's a port with some goodies and wrong colors as so often with gba games.

I wasn't aware it had a GBA version. I was talking about the NDS one. The SNES remake was unplayable for me due the insane encounter rate. Is it still a thing here?

The SNES one was the original. I think that's where our confusion came from.

Metal Max 1 got a SNES remake, Metal Max 2 came out originally on the SNES. So, there's only one remake of Metal Max 2.

Edit: On that note, you're not confusing Metal Max Returns (Remake of 1) with Metal Max 2, right?

Largely because it's really, really bad. Like the first run was compiled without the optimization flag on so it runs really slowly. If it were more famous it would be on every worst ports of all time list.

Today, I would like to talk about something different, translations that makes you ask "but why?", which I found amusing.
https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/6416/

EarthBound 2
Hack of Mother 3
this is the complete Mother 3 translation but “westernized” as all instances of “Mother 3″ have been changed to “EarthBound 2″ like the title screen and end screen as well as some names being changed to more western common names such as Hinawa is now Amber and so on, basically the game has been modded to feel as though it got a proper western release

Note how the description lacks capital letters and a period sign. If it has bad Engrish to make more fitting like Earthbound, then I would consider it.

https://www.romhacking.net/translations/6379/

A non-serious and fun translation hack of Dinowars: Kyouryuu Oukoku e no Daibouken! The game was released in North America as Dino City, but some alterations made it different from the original Japanese release. Including some graphical changes. That just didn’t cut it, so here’s a different spin, with all of the original graphics intact. Minus the title screen of course.

Although the translation does take some liberties, it does try to stay close to the original script, in a hackneyed kind of way. Enjoy!

Don't know that one so I dunno what to say.

Party suggestions? I'm thinking Hunter, Merchanic, Soldier but not sure.

Having played through most of this game: Female Hunter as protag is great and Soldier is very useful. The passive information on what an enemy is weak given by hunter is huge, and the ability to force specific random fights helps a lot in many places. Hero hunter also avoids a bug that makes any other hunter have worse skills when taking wrestler as a subclass. Soldier gets an attack buff power and a lot of potent exclusive weapons. I would not take a mechanic though. Their driver level isn't appreciably higher (it's only tied for second best and not much higher than soldier), and they're primarily useful for their skills, which are easily poached with subclassing, but have half the attack power of a soldier. I'd probably take a wrestler since they're reportedly stupidly powerful and less gear based.

Subclass wise, you 100% want a nurse. Healing items are trivial to get 99 of, but they're the only way to heal more than one character at once reliably. Hunter and (mid-late game) Artist gets the ability to attack multiple times in a vehicle which is really, really good. Third would likely be Mechanic, since enough enemies . How those should distributed between the three, I have no idea.

There is somebody working on Wachenröder for the Saturn. They have released a rough early version of the translation (alignment issue's with text boxes and most of the game is still in Japanese). It seems Mednafen Saturn is the only emulator that mostly works with the current patch. You can find the patch on the discord of SEGA SATURN, SHIRO!.
