that doesnt even make any sense for me to get triggered =/
RPG = you control your dude
strategy game = you control your guys
DMs that control multiple characters aren't playing RPGs.
Which is why each one is controlled by an individual virtual friend.
So D&D is an RPG while I'm creating my character but when the first thing I do in gameplay is cast find familiar it's now a strategy game

Check the PHB.
creature acting as a familiar can benefit a wizard, conveying its sensory powers to its master, conversing with him, and serving as a guard/scout/spy as well.
You don't control the familiar, you give orders to it(in character, not out of character) and its "sensory powers" are conveyed to you.

This is further implied with this line:
The wizard has an empathic link with the familiar and can issue it mental commands at
a distance of up to 1 mile.

What's the difference between me ordering my character to do something and me ordering my character to telepathically (free action) order my familiar to do something?

All this means is that the PHB is written in first person.

The difference between someone telling you to do something and an omnipotent, omnipresent voice from the heavens telling you to do something.

So, for example, would it be considered an RPG if the game established that you are giving orders to your companions in battle while you only control your character outside of combat?

Most probably a tactics game like X-COM depending on other factors.

Strap Yourselves In Serpent in the Staglands Shadorwun: Hong Kong Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag. Pathfinder: Wrath I'm very into cock and ball torture I helped put crap in Monomyth
Compared to what?

:hmmm:

I wasn't making a comparison but, for one, I like the PoE portraits more. The way they are cropped makes them applicable to a wider variety of characters. You see only the face so, for instance, if you have a dwarf character, most of the pictures could be portraying a dwarf and it still makes sense. ID portraits reveal too much of the characters body, you can tell whether it's a human or a halfling, etc. and they would not be appropriate for other characters.
It has THE BEST chick portraits, not even a contest.

What if I have multiple personality disorder?

In this case, you can play DOS as lonewolf in multiplayer with your imaginary friend living in your head and still think you're only controlling one character, which is perfectly fine with Rusty's RPG fantasy.

rusty_shackleford Instead of trying to define things beyond your comprehension like RPGs, why don't you try to lick your own arse, with some time and application, i'm sure you could succeed.

If the ARCHOLOS thread doesn't have more activity than the WRATH OF THE CRINGEFINDER thread by the end of 2022, then the existence of the RPG CODEX can no longer be justified. Good mechanics are all well and good, but no excuse to shame and degrade yourselves with degenerate Owlbear filth. :argh:

if a game has full party control it isn't an rpg it's a strategy game/wargame

This is a good idea, both sides would benefit from a formal split between single character RPGs and party based squad based RPGs.

But you guys have to take action RPGs like Fallout 3 into the single character camp.

single character camp gets:
Fallout
Fallout 2
Arcanum
VTMB
Deus Ex
FNV
Gothic
Morrowind

full party control gets:
PST
BG
BG2

Seems like a fair split.
