I think it does a lot of things better then thief. Smarter ai, better sound design, less frustrating rope climbing, better lighting thinks to the doom engine. It also has better keyboard controls.
The voice actor imitates Stephen Russell's inflections pretty well.

I want to point out that you won't play this character for most missions. Most fm authors don't use corbin despite what gaming past-time says.

The Dark Mod 2.11 has been Released!

The Dark Mod 2.11 is primarily a bug-fix release. The majority of development time was dedicated to fixing or improving long-standing bugs or problem areas with the project rather than focusing on new features.
That said, some of the improvements that were introduced to address these issues could very well be classified as new features in terms of the amount of changes required to bring them to life.

A full changelog can be viewed here, but some highlights include:

Major gameplay improvements!

For players, Stealth Score and AI alert behavior has been improved to better detect tactile contact with AI and proximity.
An older TDM release introduced a grace period feature that was overly broad and made some AI ignore players that were right in front of them. This has been substantially improved so stealth scoring and AI reactions should be a lot more consistent and logical.
Players will also have a new Blackjack experience with better cues about whether a blackjack attack will succeed and improvements to the way that the blackjack attack is executed.
Players can more smoothly transition from climbing as the player is now permitted to be crouched during the climb.
There is a new multi-loot feature which allows you to pickup multiple loot pieces by holding down the frob button!

Performance Improvements!

The new volumetric light feature has been improved via a new blur phase. This means that you no longer need to increase the samples to reduce or remove banding and performance should be substantially improved.
Before ( 2.10 with dither and low sample artifacts, click to view):

After ( 2.11 with the new blur algorithm, click to view ):

Soft Shadows now utilize scissors and tile-based evaluation in stencil mode so that Anti-Aliasing no longer need be applied to the entire shadow buffer.
Shadow Maps have improved mipmap, LOD and texel utilization. There should be fewer artifacts and better performance.
Large models are now evaluated via a BVH structure so that they can be split for lighting and culling optimizations.
AI think cycles have been optimized and perform less work per-frame.
GLSL programs have been rewritten to have better performance on AMD graphic cards.

Included mission improvements!

Mission 1: A New Job now features subtitles!
Mission 2: Tears of Saint Lucia has been improved with EFX reverb and a few bug fixes!

Asset fixes and additions!

B.jpeg

Dragofer has fixed hundreds of assets that were missing setup definitions or other components that would cause the console to flood with errors on TDM launch or on the launch of missions. In addition, he has added hundreds of new and old assets from both TDM team members and members of the TDM community.

Improvements for Mappers!

The Engine now supports Obj model format
Material Shaders no longer require you to add frob stages. Frob is now auto-generated. You can still add custom frob effects to materials if preferred
Missions can now include decls that override those in the core TDM without using an override file to replace the entire core file.
GUI scripting has been overhauled with better syntax and error reporting
Dmap precision has been increased and Dmap T-junction performance has been optimized

To UPDATE, simply run the tdm_installer.exe file in your darkmod folder. Note that tdm_update.exe is no longer supported,

but you can download the new installer from the Downloads page if you don’t have it yet.
Please be aware that old saved games will not be compatible with 2.11, so finish any missions you might be in the middle of first!

Nice, updating now. Anyone know if they are bothering to fix their OpenAL for Linux? I guess it uses an old version or something as it does not pick up Bluetooth devices at all and it also fails to use any device beside whatever ALSA is setting as the system default (ALSA usually picks HDMI audio as default which is a pain in the ass if you use onboard or USB). Could also be that it's not playing nice with Pipewire. Dhewm3 uses OpenAL too and it has none of these issues.

Codex 2016 - The Age of Grimoire
The blackjack improvement is very nice since it was a pain in the ass to knock anyone out in earlier versions, and I'm not seeing it in the changelog, but there was a frob crosshair that would pop up when directly hovering over an item and would go away during general sneaking gameplay.

Anyone knows if the have a campaign planned for TDM? Something like T2X?
Nope. There have been small campaigns (like 3 FMs), but nothing big.
That's a shame. I just reinstalled TDM because of this update and it's almost perfect besides this small flaw. There's something to be said for making the missions feel connected and to actually have the loot you collect count for something. I read other posters complained that there were no good reviews around on youtube for this but it's very hard to review it since it's an enhanced FM launcher Deadly Shadows and the terrible hub instead of clearly separated missions. Even the Thi4f reboot did this mistake but made it even worse with loot locked behind upgrades. It's kinda a big part of the original two games that got lost, the whole buying what you thought you would need part of the missions as well as the story that made them more memorable.

That's is only real flaw. But this is a community thing. You get it as is. One can't really fault it for this.

It's not just a community thing but also free, so I can't complain. Does anyone know if mappers would get into trouble if they used the new voice AI thing to give the player new and original Garrett quips or mission introductions? It seems like it is kinda unexplored legal territory. Especially if it's just something someone uploaded to the internet for free and not a commercial product.

The dev community around TDM tends to be risk averse in legal areas, so probably not. There's some discussion about it on the forums and somebody had the idea of making an AI voice based not on the Garret VA but on some existing VA who's able to imitate him well, which I found pretty interesting. But another thing is that there are several talented voice actors in the community who enjoy doing it and produce good results, and it makes no sense to not use them just so somebody could get lines spoken by an artificial and ultimately worse sounding Garret.

Imo the best use case for this particular game is for development - a voice AI allows a mapper to iterate over several different versions quickly until he finds the lines that sound the best, and only have the final version voiced by real actors before release.

The main team has largely given-up on something like this. The original attempt lead to many arguments and talented people leaving the project.

The second attempt was the "Crucible of Omens" campaign but the participants burned out on the amount of work.
It was meant to take some of the largest WIP missions and string them together into a mega campaign.
( I still think a plan like that might work someday.
If someone were clever enough they could pick through the missions list and find a bunch of missions that
might gel with each other and figure out how to connect their stories. )

The 3rd attempt was not as devastating as the first two but was never completed. ( Only two of the 3 missions were done ).

The final hope was that Grayman's 8 mission "William Steele" series would become the official campaign but he passed away before it was complete.
( So close, missions 6 and 7 were in beta and mission 8 was starting production. )
I think Grayman was pretty productive because he was retired.
Maybe once all the old taffers age out of their jobs we'll have a renaissance of fan missions?

That said, several mission authors have made series of missions that can be played in sequence:

https://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php?title=Fan_Mission_Series

Sotha's 7 mission "Thomas Porter" series is the largest one and is complete.

I think most folks are hoping that Goldwell or Kingsal flesh out their series since they are the most consistent authors with the best "production value"
( voice acting, scripted sequences, new AI categories, new animations, etc ).
But both seem to have succumb to the malady of the "not enough time to work on hobbies" that afflicts mission authors
as they get older and burdened with responsibilities.

Right now the hope is that a new crop of authors like the amazing Wellingtoncrab ( check out Iris !!! )
will arrive take the mantle over from those who no longer have time to pump out missions.

All this, or someone could arrive out-of-the-blue and just show up with a multi-mission campaign.
We would probably accept any reasonably long and high production value campaign made by anyone as the "official campaign"
at this point just to have an answer to this request.

I played about 4 or 5 FMs about 5 years ago. Impressive but man was it pods-to-the-wall difficult compared to Thief 1 or 2. Half the time black jacking wouldn't work (or I didn't get the hang of it; maybe you had to hit exactly a certain way) and the AI seemed 10 times more alert than TDP/TG FMs and many a time I lay paralyzed with fear cowering in crouch (probably as it should be, because, well, you're a fucking thief!). But this was a few updates ago so maybe it's more accessible now. It ran smooth for me with the exception of when multiple monsters teleported or spawned because you stole a crypt jewel or something, then there was stutter for a few seconds. It now has analog support for controllers, and the control scheme I use for Thief would be ideal for it, I think. Need to check out what's been done since I last played.

Good news! If I recall correctly, blackjacking has been both finetuned and reworked to include an indicator that you're in the zone to successfully blackjack an NPC by raising your hand similarly to Thief 3.

I think the enemy difficulty has been slightly tuned as well since then, in any case both hearing and vision of NPCs can be tuned in the options menu if the defaults are not fun for you.

Some absurdly good FMs came out in the last 5 years, new high quality assets, graphics engine features and other nice things. Go for it and enjoy!

While I normally caution against going into the best levels early (nothing else can measure up) - if you're on the fence about the game my two favorite levels by a wide margin:

Volta II - Cauldron of the Gods
Iris

If you play those levels and you aren't feeling it - i feel pretty confident in saying TDM is not your cup of tea.

Are there any incompatibility issues between early TDM FMs and the recent updates (2.11?) or are they all patched for that now? Was thinking about playing a few of the William Steele missions. Also wanted to mention that AngelLoader (the successor to NewDarkLoader) now supports all the classic looking glass games + TDM in a single instance and interface. I have an obscene number of Thief TDP/TG FMs collected over the years. It has a new dark theme too though I wish it was customizable since white on grey is bland... very very bland.

Most things should be compatible. Popular mods (like the William Steele series) certainly are.

I'm pretty sure if there are any incompatibilities the in-game mod downloader would mention it - don't know anything about AngelLoader. I use FMSel for thief stuff and the in-browser system for TDM.

Adding to that, if you want to be sure, just search for the mission in the TDM forums, sometimes for older missions you'll find people complaining in the mission thread in the last few years and mentioning what specifically is broken, if anything. But from what I noticed it's usually missions from earlier than 2015.

Specifically with William Steele, I played through those using I think 2.10 or possibly 2.09 and there were no issues.

I liked the concept that the unofficial TFixes/patches for the first two Thief games included all the fixes for early FMs, or at least the classic ones. If you use AngelLoader, and click on the Mods tab in the right pane, it even shows a "patches" box that's been ticked if it's an old mod that used to be troublesome under NewDark. Very clever, these boys 'n' girls in our community.

The Dark Mod 2.12 is out:

https://www.moddb.com/mods/the-dark-mod/news/the-dark-mod-212-is-here

With the new culling optimization, the last really heavy mission "Scroll of Remembrance" seems to be pretty tamed and should over over 30FPS for even the lowest-end players now ( at least in CPU bound scenarios, don't try to run it at 4K with High Quality Soft Shadows and 16xMSAA on an integrated GPU ).

Controls are smoother too with the new contextual frob to interact changes.

I plan on updating the article over the new few days.

If you have never played or haven't recently played "No Honor Among Thieves", "Alberic's Curse", or "Sir Talbot's Collateral" these have all been updated and polished during the 2.12 beta cycle so they are worth another play. Especially "No Honor Among Thieves" which now has Volumetric Light effects and has additional performance optimizations and LOD setting changes.. and subtitles too.

I wonder if they can get more performance or at least access to better effects if they move to Vulkan? Currently running the game with Zink (OpenGL to Vulkan layer) and it runs smoother and does not seem to choke at +120fps.

Ye, Dark Mod desperately needs a quality campgain to attract people

Volta II - Cauldron of the Gods
The first mission is also pretty good and should not be skipped as Volta 2 is a direct continuation
