This game looked like my wet dream. Imagine my surprise when it turned out the battles are solved automaticaly, without player control. I mean, what the fuck is this?

It is a spritual successor to Ogre Battle, so I don't know what you were expecting.

I guess I had wrong expectations, watching the trailers I thought it's somewhat like Fire Emblem, but in 2D. What's an apeal of such a games? This is real, non-judgmental question.

Isn't Fire emblem pretty much the same? You just order an unit to attack another and what weapon to use, if they learned an active skill, the characters use them in battle by themselves, I think only more modern Fire Embles like Engage had actually any "skill" for the player to use. If anything, Unicorn Overlord offers you more control, as you can customize unit more, with weapons, armor and accessories, aswell as allowing you to set up condition for skill usage, target priority, skll priority or if they will use any skill at all, as well as having Valor skills that are used outside of combat that ranges from attacks and healing spells to utility stuff like stealing money or summoning mercenaries.

Is pretty good.

ps: Forgot to mention probably the most significant difference, but squad formation is very important and fun to experiment with. In one early quest, I had to defeat a bunch of bandits that had taken over a church. Most of the enemies were archers, many of them positioned on towers to assist their forces from afar. First time I didn't adjust any of my squads and actually lost because I ran out of time, as my squads kept getting too hurt, which forced them to rest. Second time I decided to hire a Figther mercenary, a unit that uses sword and shield and whose skill allows him to block a ranged attack to protect a friendly unit, aswell as a leader skill that reduces the damage of long range assists. He was level 3 in a level 5 quest, so I didn't have much hope. Turns out that Fighter Squad pretty much beat the whole map by himself despite being underleved, only because both his skills were an amazing counter to the enemies' archers.

What, uh... what do you think happens in Fire Emblem?

I've played only 3 Houses, you got control over your squad during battles there.
You're misunderstanding what goes on in this game. You control the individual characters on the map, including having them deploy special moves and items and such. Each of those is just an entire squad rather than an individual as they are in FE.

Setting up your units, and finding the most effective way to vanquish the enemy. Slowly taking over enemy territory, and defeating previously insurmountable obstacles.

You're clearly new to this whole emulation thing. If nintendo could stop people from making/distributing/using emulators and roms there wouldn't be sites kicking around with games from the first 6 generations of consoles. At worst this is going to mean some part of the software gets split off into a separate download, like the BIOS files for playstation emulators.
