I didn't understand the appeal of the Dark Angels for the longest time, but when I finally got it, they clicked as an interesting Chapter. It's the same with some of the other themes; the Codex doesn't always get across their essence. It's not like say Star Trek, where it's very obvious what the Klingon Empire's appeal is, or the Romulan Star Empire's appeal and character. Rather a dry Codex description sometimes leaves one scratching their head...

Finally someone explained it like this:

First remember that not all traitor Chapters are Chaos worshippers, some are just "renegades".

The Cult Imperialis (Imperial Creed) and the Lex Imperialis (Imperial Law) say that: 1). Traitors cannot be forgiven, under any circumstances. To forgive a traitor is Heresy. 2). Heretics can be forgiven, but it requires the heretic's death and confession. This is an important distinction in Imperial dogma. The Dark Angels offer forgiveness to The Fallen (seeing them as having been misled), torturing them to death to extract confession (The Fallen are traitors but ones that are seen as having comitted Treason separately to Horus due to misinformation). The Dark Angels are thus forgiving Treason, comitting themselves the slightly lesser crime of Heresy in the process. Thus the Dark Angels are guilty of the crime of 'Heresy', and if known it would require the entire Dark Angels Chapter's confession and death. They feel it is their duty to offer redemption to The Fallen. Thus the Dark Angels must keep their Heresy secret, killing anyone who finds out, or be legally destroyed by the Imperium.

BTW, I dunno if this has been asked way back, but to all the thread's bros:

Q: What is your favourite Space Marine chapter personally, or if you have miniature, what Space Marine chapter do you play?

(Maybe the two are different?)

I like the Dark Angels, rampant secrecy to the point of paranoia, the knightly aesthetic. Salamanders come close from the lore of them being as noble as an SM can be usually, stuff like their keeping in touch with their families and living among their people
See the Dark Angel stuff is retarded lore still, all legions had traitors but they act like if they are found out its game over. Half the entire White Scar legion were going to pledge for Horus for instance and you do not see modern 40k white scars letting it live over them. However, I guess I am shortening things since the White Scar traitors were pretty much forgiven if they became suicide warriors for the loyalists and they died as loyalists in the end.

Their fear of being seen as traitors making it more likely they are ones is sort of funny in a grimdark way. I should get the new books on the Lion's return. Although I guess how he deals with the legion (because they are really are one still) will be later.

Favorite sm chapter: Blood Angels or Imperial Fists. Marines Malevolent as a surprise 3rd choice.

I'm going to second that there was a time when it was Blood Angels being pushed as the poster boys more then ultramarines, it sure was the case when i got into 40k at least.
I preferred the blue and yellow color scheme of the ultras but after reading through the lore books, blood angels had a lot more going on for them then anyone else at the time.
Hell they would actually end up giving some of their selling points to other chapters (notably the being nicest chapter schtick) and no one even noticed because blood angels have so many themes in them to begin with (whereas if you took away wolf wolf wolf from space wolves or the roman vibe from the ultras, wtf do you have left?).
Blood Angels could ditch the vampire stuff completely and still have lots to fallback on.

Then throw in what was for me the best special characters (tycho and his phantom of the opera mask, corbulo brandishing the grail, mephiston being edgy vamp or dante with his D:< golden face) and it wasn't even close compared to what other chapters at the time got.

Over the years though, popular perception and memes have warmed me to the Imperial Fists as the most autistic of mainstream sm chapters. And tbh i do prefer defensive actions over the blood angels close combat centric approach. Had the Imperial Fists been more fleshed out in 2nd edition it's likely i'd have gone for them instead of BA, but well, such is life. But yeah i like the idea of autistic builder sm who beef with iron warriors over who can build things better.

Marines Malevolent as I like them as an antidote to the trend of seemingly every sm chapter being nice guys now so it's no longer special anymore.
It's also a counter effect of so many normies getting into 40k and now getting into arguments about "good guys" in 40k and then they will inevitably clutch their pearls about marines malevolent. This makes me like them, they are like Rogue Trader marines that got lost in 40k and newbies hate them for it.

They got an underdog appeal to them too because everyone roots for them to go heretical or suffer an ignoble fate because wow those guys are such meanies!
Yet fact is they are a 2nd founding chapter who despite many inquisitorial investigations, never been been found guilty of any wrong doing and that is quite a feat, even most first founding chapters would not survive that kind of sustained close scrutiny.
I'm sure this will inevitably end when some tard writer decides to give the "fans" what they want and reveal the MM were traitors all along or some bs, but until then, i like these asshole space marines who dont give a damn how many civvies is in the path of their whirlwind barrage.

I highly doubt they would kill a chapter, they were confirmed with primaris marines and rarely do anything too crazy. Salamander/Lamenter fellating is reaching reddit levels of annoyance.

The Lamenters SHOULDNT be allowed to always be on the brink of destruction and still some how come back. I want to remind you they didnt show up at Baal to help during the Devastation. While everyone under the sun showed up even an old school chapter thought to have been lost the Flesh Eaters were able to show up. The Salamanders care for humans but even they wouldn't waste their lives in such useless martyr complex last stands. Just once id like a pragmatic chapter like the Mentors or Raptors call their attitude out why would you waste marines in trying to save already dying refugees? How much boys died in the process to even BECOME a marine? The minimum is at least 100 per marine and the Lamenters waste their numbers to willingly. It is also not like they are special the Raven Guard are known to specifically save slaves and cause slave revolts agasint xenos/chaos. They are not fellated over it that much compared to the Lamenters.
