Tried this but it looks like devs overdosed on grim medieval aesthetics pills. I will start with complains.
> customize your characters - great but its so dark that you can't see shit
> zooming levels are not existent so you can't zoom to see shit - give me ZOOM IN devs FFS
> over sized 2 handed weapons - like they are taken straight from some MMO style fantasy game
> crafting system with gathering random shit on the map
> crafting professions with leveling and shit
> class restrictions, can't use this weapon or armor because - well - YOU CAN'T
> limited starting options - sure BB have limited starting options too but your troops are quite flexible in what they can use, not here
> enemy drooping loot in minimal amounts
> game take its time to load shit
> writing is really dry and quite bad
> all brown, gray and dark - give me some colors
Now good points
> combat is quite fast and serviceable, nothing great(well as far as i can see) but nothing terrible(like in banner saga or bedlam)
> its quite nice to explore the game world but its not randomly generated so i guess it have limited replay ability
I guess its not that bad as I expected but not great either. Also hard to see shit because no zoom.

I decided to keep playing it. Apparently the saves have been compatible through all updates and will remain so until final version(I.e: "early access" done right). Another point for this.

It is a legit good and fun game. It is not "great" because of some silly design flaws that will likely remain.

Apparently the devs have the bad habit of listening to fan suggestions. Problem is that many of these suggestions come from redditors. That is why they implemented silly things such as "war ponies" and taming wild animals.

Don't mind the bad writing, intention is what counts:

- kill rapefugees
- law and order!

Still playing this, it's amazing.
Especially the random interactions between all game elements. Feels like somebody was paying attention to details.
I don't remember the last time I was so excited about a game. Definitely more fun than homosexual dungeon of nauehlbeuk or expeditions Rome.

I'm still undecided if I keep playing it. Game is certainly a lot of fun, but then again I might get tired and sick of it when there is a final release(which seems due to come in about 6 months).

Yes, you might wanna wait to play it with all the stuff the release version has to offer. Even though it's pretty replayable, not Battle Brothers replayable but still. Then again i don't think you can do all the regions in one playthrough at a normal pace without getting tired of the game. For example some regions are more tedious than others, like Ludern. The swamp boar fights in particular are sloggish as fuck and the navigation of the region is a waste of time and resources. Might wanna visit it for warpaints only and do the rest of the regions first. You can play for 100 hours and only complete like 2-3 regions at best due to grindy nature of the game. Or maybe you have more patience idk.

Thats one of the few problems i have with the game. Wish they nerfed the gold rush a notch to curb the tedium.

So id decided to play it more and tbh game get better after fairly harsh begging. Completed 1st region twice - one on region locked static difficulty and one in free scaling one to see the difference.
So far I liked it on both. Scaling one don't really push to to expand your rooster as enemy size and lv scale to your company. Overall didn't have much problem unless I was short on tools to fix armor or wanted to do it cheap(blacksmith city repair). Region locked offered more options both to grind easier encounters and fight stronger enemies and definitely pushed me to hire new guys to field more bodies.
Battle system get better as you get more skills on troops and so enemy. Its quite fun to engage and pretty solid.
As soon as I learned how economy and crafting work I was starting rich pretty fast. Overall at the moment i don't feel that money are a big problem(but there are harder difficulties both for combat and campaign elements). Finding new armors and weapons and collecting them is also quite fun. Tho lv restrictions are quite unnecessary(or at last feel like they are but probably they are in because of late game balance).
Customization of your troops is quite minimal but exist, limits on weapons and armors is quite annoying but overall troops classes exist to fulfill specific niche and do it pretty well. There are also company ranks(cpt, ltn) that grant ability to give orders(buffs or valor(combat currency) recovery. its pretty solid and feel good to use.
So combat and economy are quite good and its fun to play.
World is kind of meh, writing is dry. engine have some problems(loadings, NO ZOOM, fullscreen switch to 8bit color pallet for me(yeah really). Very limited starting options - and they are all very similar so they are quite boring.

much better than i expected. Not great but good enough. Maybe it will even get better. just don't expect much and you will probably be positively surprised.

Look, it's called the Dark Ages for a reason: Because it was DARK. There were NO LIGHTS, as those wouldn't be invented for ages.

Major Update #3 | Co-op
Attention mercenaries!

The highly anticipated and much requested Wartales co-op update is available now!

Traverse the vast open world of Wartales with up to 4 players, lay out your tactics and devise a strategy before you face off with some of the many hostile inhabitants of this harsh world and defeat them side by side.

Work together to explore and unravel the mysteries of these strange, unwelcoming lands, while sharing your money, loot and resources before ending the day with a delicious meal sat around a roaring campfire alongside your loyal companions.

Read on to find out more about the Co-op Update…

Choose your characters, classes, roles in your troop, and most importantly, decide who should take care of the pony.

Customize the way your characters look to ensure that your in game counterparts are the most accurate representations of morally questionable, mercenary versions of you.

Wartales is a hostile world, so your troop will be sticking together throughout your adventure.

Each player is free to lead the whole troop without constraints, just make sure you discuss your plans with your teammates, as a well informed team is a happy and alive team.

As a team, you must decide together with who or what to interact with. Communication is key, and never more so than when deciding on decisions or actions that might impact the rest of your group…

If you wish to engage in some side jobs or activities, your companions will be there to offer some words of encouragement (or disparagement, in which case, find better friends)

Your camp is one of the few places where you’re free to let your hair down and relax in between being attacked by bandits and dodging plague ridden bloodthirsty locals, so of course, everyone is free to do whatever they wish with their spare time here.

Assign your companions to carry out different tasks or professions, but make sure you run this by your teammates as only one of you can use any of the available equipment at any one time…
And obviously, nothing gets a mercenary ready for a new day of doing mercenary stuff than rest, relaxation, a well fed troop and good night's sleep the night before. So put your feet up, fill your bellies and regale eachother with some funny stories of murder and kidnapping before turning in for a good night's sleep before your next adventure.

You work together, so you share the rewards. Therefore all of your money you accrue from your missions is split between your team.

So, if you want to keep morale high and avoid any mutinies or unfortunate sleep stabbings, it’s highly recommended you consult your teammates before spending or using any of your hard earned spoils.

You do have your own inventory to manage though, so if hypothetically, you found something precious or valuable and didn’t feel like sharing that day, well, what your teammates don’t know won’t hurt them, right…?

It goes without saying, but when potential death is staring you in the face, you’re going to need to be as in tune and communicative with your teammates as possible.

So plan accordingly, strategise, decide who strikes who, and when.

You have full control over your characters, so make sure your decisions are made with the best interests of your teammates in mind, as stepping on each other's toes could very well result in some mortal errors…

Also, a big thank you to everyone who took part in the Co-op Open Beta, your feedback was instrumental in helping us improve and refine the co-op experience and of course in making sure that the update was able to meet the expectations of our players upon release!

Enjoy the update and don’t hesitate to let us know if you experience any issues following its release.

Was anything actually added to the base game? Or just the coop feature 1% of players will use?

Fucking decline bros.

I noticed that now you can repair your armor partially or fully with Ctrl pressed.
Other than that I don't know. I reached Gosenberg and Im starting to get sick of the slow-ass combat tbh.

Been playing this on and off for a while now. It's pretty good imo.
The strategic layer is ok, but nothing really groundbreaking. You can run to avoid encounters but it depletes a "run" stamina bar so you need to take a little bit of care on when to use it lest you get jumped when it's low, but that's pretty much it.
The tactical layer I like much better. You and the enemy will take turns moving units but the catch is, you can choose what unit you're moving and you can preposition your unites before the battle on certain spots but the AI can't, therefore giving you a lot of freedom on how to exploit the battlefield. Overall a pretty fun experience. And as someone already said, it starts rough and you can loose a unit fast at the beginning. It gets a lot more forgiving later on while still requiring you to pay attention, or a bigger battle might turn sour on you.

Get Cheatengine and enable Speedhack. I play with x1.5 speed on the map and x3 on the battles.

I hate level scaling, but wonder if free exploration is really better than region lock. Seem some players complaining that after a couple of regions your party would steamroll everything.

Off course I have also read that eventually enemies scaling to your uber bros would lead to endless battles against hordes of enemies(Battle Brothers had the same problem).

Hopefully they balance it out until release.

So how does it compare to Battlebros? Is it at least half as much fun?

It does not have the same depth or complexity, or even the same low fantasy feel. It is more of a politically correct battle brothers ; a battle brothers that could have appeal to the masses.

I'll give it a try once it comes out.
I've only played a very early build from the start of the early access period and I think my primary point of concern is that the gameplay felt very... basic.
The core gameplay loop is about managing your food and finances while traversing the world in which you'll do various mercenary missions and fight hostile groups of wildlife or bandits. The battles didn't feel like anything special when I played the game since most classes only had 1 or 2 abilities that often felt like they basically did the same thing.

With that being siad, it does seem that over the course of the past one or two years they've added more stuff, talents and various gameplay systems for the player to interact with - primarily in what I assume is the mid and late game. It'll be interesting to see how it actually plays out though.
