This game is a lot better than I thought it would be. It's still just mediocre (but that makes it a cut above pretty much every other game), but there's more than meets the eye.

I made a new squad after completing Highpool and Ag center to make a 10 charm character with kiss ass, smart ass, barter (total waste, along with the leadership skill that I sunk 4 ticks into each) and drop the premade sniper and not put any in hard ass since you get a sniper and a hardy womyn of action at the beginning of the game that overlapped with my characters, and then

On my first go round I was thinking how stupid it was that the Injuns reverted to their pre-Columbus stone age beliefs.

So that's cool! Still stupid how many petite super rugged bikini models there are that are super badasses and tough as fuck, stronger than fit men twice their size, but whatevs. Dishonored is like the only video game to have a realistic depiction of the biological sexes, and you know they took a lot of shit for that from tumblr slags and the ever so smart and enlightened male SJWs

Why is that anyway? You don't see it so much in film or TV except in the dumbest Hollywood productions and less commonly in some mindless European crap, but in RPGs wonder women are everywhere even in low tech feudal states.

It's just...
JXBYIHJ.jpg

One thing that was dumb was I did visit the Rail Nomad Camp while mucking about (but reverted to a different save and went to the prison instead) and I think it's quite inexplicable that none of the 6 in my party could swim, that that girl didn't look for anyone else, that all my people could only just stare when he's barely out there, and you have to do some stupid thing where you push the column with brute force in order to save the kid, there is no other solution. Again, see picture above ^

what exactly is the use of shotguns?
most of them are very costly in AP, and they have super-shitty range, with a mostly useless cone attack.
single-shot shotguns might be the worst gun in the game. turn 1 = move closer to enemy, turn 2 = shoot, turn 3 = reload or unjam, turn 4 = shoot or reload (if jammed).
meanwhile a rifle can with 10 AP get 6 shots in one turn with no need for reloads. my two dudes with FAMAS are killing everything.
the only pros so far is that you can easily support one character with shell ammo.
but even pistols are a thousand times better in terms of tactics and damage.

I didn't initially make a shotgun character and I had a lot of unused ammo sitting around, and low to none ammo on my other characters so when I remade my squad I made a character with shotgun and basically I agree with you. The shotgun guy is less valuable than my talker character since the talker can waste heavy armored dudes (the RSM heavy gunners) with his energy weapon.

I got a good laugh out of how terribly designed the Ag Center ending turned out to be:

So there's the Doctor surrounded by dead bodies. My perception was high enough to recognize he was the one who had killed them. Cool, so I can call him out on it and get the upper hand, right? Apparently not. No, he still gets the first initiative. What was the fucking point of the perception check if it serves to actually do nothing? And why does a guy who is covered in blood, admittedly torn to shreds by the bugs, have 100HP and enough initiative to - and I counted here - fire TEN SHOTS TO START THE BATTLE. Why does he fire so many shots, reloads, and fires more shots, while my people just fucking sit there? And he does this with a revovler. Is this Doctor a fat, bloodied piece of shit or Neo breaking the Matrix while my guys just stand around being wowed? BTW, the battle consists of shooting him while he just stands there. I hope somebody, somebody else out there also saw how retarded and shit banal that was.

I was pretty frustrated as well. And that wasn't the last time i was frustrated with combat/encounters.

Got a rather serious glitch in Titan Temple

Killed the Enola guy in the silo, used the militia thingamajig on the computer and left the silo via the exit behind to courtain where the priest guy stands. I kill all hostile monks and when they die, Sadler shouts "Inside", the games goes into a cutscene as the militias run past the gate, and I can't do anything else, the game is just stuck in combat(or cutscene mode, IDK). There are other hostiles on the map, raiders outside and such - could that be it?

Extremly bad game. I gave it up before even completing the first "quest". You have to kill a Large Toad which proves impossible on Normal difficulty. Amazing.
It's quite easy even on ranger difficulty, he must be functionally retarded. It can basically be said that he was outsmarted by a toad, hell, real toads probably have better intelligence than the toad AI.

These reviewers are Literrary fucking retarded.

It's pretty easy even in supreme jerk, even though my rangers shot their squad mates instead of the toad most of the time.

metacritic scores seem remarkably stable. surprisingly, average critic score is higher than the average user score.

Probably because the average metacritic user only bought the game because they seen it mentioned alongside "Fallout", which they assumed meant it must be similar to their favourite game "Fallout 3".

what exactly is the use of shotguns?

The AoE is the main draw. Using a different ammo type is nice too. It would've been much better if there was some type of party formation mechanic, at the moment unless you spend a lot of time preparing before each battle using shotguns is pretty awkward. Late game it can be nice to throw some extra points into shotguns as a secondary skill (if you started with high INT you end up rolling in extra points). Having a secondary weapon you can switch to for clearing out AoE trash is convenient, most things run up into your face anyways so the range fall-off doesn't matter much and you're penalized for using other weapons like AR/Sniper.

Jesus those turrets at the Prison seem ridiculously powerful, I'm going to assume that I'm simply not levelled high enough because at level 9 fighting 2 turrets with 4096 HP seems well out of my league.

Also none of the rangers at Citadel seem to respond to 'Rick Baychowski' despite Red saying he'd be at Citadel, am I missing a trigger or is Red taking me for a ride?

I'm just going to go to Rail Nomads find out more about Ace's death for the time being, hopefully that'll give me enough levelling to finish off the RSM.

EDIT: nvm I just realised Rick's cell was in a section of Citadel I'd never noticed before

That's funny when you obtain two rad suit sets you can't get rid of the other one. Can't sell it, can't drop it. So that's +10 lb perma-dead weight.

Did I say funny? I meant fucking annoying.
Store it in your container?

I'm guessing the mine with honey badgers isn't for under level 10 parties that are only going with 4 characters? L0LZ

so uhhh am I just not supposed to be fighting those rabbits as soon as I get to the Ag Center? Five of them Zerg-rushing my squad and doing 10-15 damage a hit is a bit too much to handle. I don't have many tactical options here really.

Anyone try out the Southwestern Folklore backer skill? I just found out I can easily add the skill to my save file even though I wasn't a backer :D. It only gives bonus lore/text so I don't consider it cheating ;).

You can snipe the exploding fungus things from a distance when the rabbits are near them. If you're far enough away it wont initate combat and you can wait till they walk near the other one and repeat. I managed the fight on max difficulty with only 1 Ranger +Angela/Rose.

I found the rabbits easy. They only have like 15 hit points so one hit my powerful weapon or two hits by a weak weapon is enough, I never had to face 5 at once though so I don't think I've actually been bitten by one. :P

Yeah there's a team of five on the right-hand path when you enter the Ag area. Shooting one from a distance starts all five of them running at you with their absurd amount of AP and doing a horrifying jumping attack from two squares away that does 10-15 damage. I think I'll come back when I have some grenades.

Wasteland 2 Review Roundup #2
A large amount of reviews in various languages came in over the weekend and today. Find them rounded up after the break.

games.on.net.

I’m feeling pretty good about my party, so I start the game proper.

I’m probably going to stop writing this in the present tense now because, honestly, the next few days are kind of a blur and I can’t really recount everything that happened. Suffice to say, despite all my misgivings, I had a great time. I had a great time.

You see, it turns out that Wasteland 2 is exactly the sort of choice-driven RPG I love. You make choices and those choices have a direct result in the game. People will talk to you about those choices. Sometimes they’ll give you a hard time about your choice because they are rarely black and white, and sometimes the only reason you save one settlement over another is because you cannot for the life of you figure out how to get over to the other one.

GameReactor UK, 8.

Wasteland 2’s finer elements are most manifest in the strength of the setting, in some of the character work, and in the sense of humour that veins throughout the whole game. From NPCs with daft names, to obscure references that will draw knowing smiles, a lot of effort has gone into pleasing the audience. The humour starts from the title screen and can be found in nearly every facet of the game thereafter. Indeed, the story that pins it together is interesting enough, but it’s in the sub-plots and side-quests you encounter on the journey that really capture the imagination.

Some of the voice-over work is really good, and the dialogue is, on the whole, well written. Carry characters with appropriate skills in your team and you unlock new dialogue options. Character portraits are reused time and time again, especially on the minor NPCs, but there’s enough personality in the writing for this to be a non-issue. We really warmed to the tone, and there’s a playful sense of humour in amongst all the barbarity and violence.

Shacknews, 8.

Wasteland 2 features a distinctive and unique dialogue system. Players have to pay attention to what’s being said in the text and move with the flow of conversation. Special talk options are available to characters with skills such as Kiss-Ass (charm), Smart-Ass (logic), and Hard-Ass (intimidation), but knowing when to use them is as important as having them. Bringing up a logical point at the wrong time could end just anger the person you’re talking to. In addition to the scripted dialogue opens, players can choose type keywords, pulled from observing the conversation, into the dialogue box to bring up hidden options. This is where the game can sort of become a contest between the player and developer. There are some practical solutions that can only be activated by using manual keywords. Although players can often make an educated guess based on the dialogue, it can take a while to figure out what to say and who to say it to first.

The dialogue skill system doesn’t use a success/failure percentage as it does with the recent Fallout games. If you don’t have enough points in a specific area of ass-pertise, then the option is shown but locked out. I wanted to help a vengeful merchant get his wife back from raiders, but I couldn’t because I didn’t have enough hard-ass points. I also couldn’t stop people from committing suicide, or catch someone in an obvious lie, because I didn’t have enough points in other areas. Having choices that you can’t execute is pretty much the same as having no choice at all, so it can often feel like I was forced into a particular outcome.

GamingBolt, 7.

The game certainly succeeds on giving the player choice and really making them think in order to stay one step ahead and deliver the element and immersion of survival. Keeping track of each person within the player’s team is simplified through the game’s on-screen menu.

Mouse n Joypad, 88%.

And oh how easy it is to get sucked into the wastes once more. Not from the get-go, mind you. It takes a while for this title to get its claws into you due to one reason and one reason only. In the beginning, you’re not really up to speed with how the systems work and how things happen. These things don’t really set in until you spend a couple of hours with the game. Learning, reading and clicking – only by being dedicated will you fully immerse yourself into the finer workings of Wasteland 2. And it definitely is worth it. Once you figure out how to position your team in combat, which weapons work the best for which situation – and maybe even how to win people over via dialogue – that’s when you’ll start having fun. Sadly, the fact that this process takes a while will probably put some people off. The good news is, those of you who have had experience with old RPG titles will feel at home in Wasteland 2, so knock yourself out, gaming veterans.

Booby traps, hidden enemies, raiders playing dead… the wastes are filled to the brim with dangerous things just waiting to get a jump on your crew of rangers, and you’ll quickly learn how to carefully explore your surroundings, which skill to use on what object and how to trade most efficiently. There’s a system to everything, again, and learning how to have things your way is just one of the many challenges you’ll face playing this game. However, regardless of how good you are, something will always go wrong. Maybe you’ll damage an object that you had no business firing wildly at. Maybe you’ll fail to protect an important NPC. Great thing about failing in Wasteland 2 is that doing so rarely locks you into a path to the infamous “game over” screen. It just sets a different path for your men to tread, and you’d better prepare for consequences further down the road.

Dialogues are almost as engaging as combat, which we will discuss a bit later. You can select which subject you want to talk about, but you can also manually type in ‘keywords’ that might turn the NPC to see things from your point of view or unlock different interactions later on. Also important are the skills that you can use during discussions to charm, intimidate or scare people into submission. Don’t forget that you can switch between your characters at any time to maximize the chances of you going out of the conversation as a “winner”. Sadly, most of the text has no voice-over, so you’ll have to read your way through a hefty part of the story.

The devs already *strongly hinted* that they expect most players to just edit the skill in.

Guys, I can't go on like this.

Navigate to the Rewards section of your account on the Ranger Center website, and you'll be given instructions on how to access Southwestern Lore and the exclusive portraits.

What always cracked me up was when our president Matthew Findley would send me some saves for testing purposes. No matter how far he was in the game, ABERFORTH WAS ALWAYS THERE. He just wouldn't let that goat die.
