About resizing: the height is certainly more critical than width, since everyone will start whining when some button sticks out of its row "reee, this looks awful", ya know, like that.

Zizka you'll have trouble getting people to approve of the informative button change because it's a somewhat standardized button. It would be like trying to get people to remove the floppy from the save button.

A button I always thought was a bit strange is the 'interesting' button, maybe give that one a whack

I quite like the version I've made, I think it's better so I am submitting it as I said I would. Since I'm not getting feedback on what to improve about it I'll move on to the next one.

I'm working on the troll face next. There are quite a few possibilities here. I'm talkinga about the 'funny' button. I started on the left and I'm progressing towards the version on the right. It's 22 pixels high.

At the moment it looks more like a devil than a troll. From what I can tell, the troll mascott has horns so I tried to replicate that. They might be ears however. My plan is to make the jaw larger (sort of orc-like). Once that's done, I'll animate it.

If you'd like it to look differently let me know and I'll do my best to make the requested changes.

Those troll faces are gorgeous ....... but they're too good. Like replacing classic hand puppets with slick CGI. Nobody wants the CGI.

What Zombra said, and I'd say the most important thing is button differentiation. You have to be able to tell at a glance which button is which. Right now your WIP trolls all blend together, like the Trump buttons.

One difficulty is probably that face expressions in black against red are less clear than black against yellow.

It’s all the same smiley. I started on the one in the left and improved it to the one on the right. They’re not meant to be individual smileys. That’s why the ones on the left look rough.

Right now it uses about the same amount of colors as the book. What I’d be going for is using the same palette as much as possible so that everything looks homogenous.

The thing is that, as it stands, there’s no homogeneity with the buttons. They’re all different sizes and resolutions. The goal would be buttons who have the same resolution as well as the same size. It’s usually the case with smileys.

I could use less colors and make it simpler. But then it won’t match the same style as the book.

Anyway, I’ll try to make it simpler and post a new version.

The style should be probably the one of the existing Codex trolls. It is a difficult task in any case to get the same style as the Codex trolls as well as the same clear expressions as the yellow smileys. I would try to do the "monocled", "laughing", "roll eyes", "sad" and "saluting" first. If you get those right, you can try the more difficult troll faces. Or you can do just five or six.

That's probably true as well. Though replacing a few of the generic yellow smileys with well done trolls may be worthwhile.
