I think this was actually it. I didn't realise it wasn't an RPG. I installed it and it didn't work. So mystery likely solved. Thanks Randir.

Looking at the isometric games thread really made me want to play Desperadoes, but it also didn't work.

Did you try the GOG versions? Might also need to use DXWND or dgVoodoo. I know I've played both of them within the past 5 years using the GOG releases. Don't remember if I had to do anything specific to get them working, but if I did it was almost certainly by using either DXWND or dgVoodoo.
