Why do modern RPGs have 0% soul?

On topic: I believe that many modern games have no soul because their development is characterised by compromises.
In the past, games were made by smaller teams or even individuals, so only one person was responsible for the creative version. Because of this, the creative vision of that one person came through more clearly and unfiltered. The creative vision was also more cohesive and consistent.

Nowadays, teamwork is the mantra above all else, everything has to be discussed. As a result, more unusual ideas are gradually filtered out during development and you end up with standard stuff because you constantly have to compromise within the team to avoid upsetting anyone and to find something that everyone can accept. But something solid for everyone has less soul than the unfiltered idea of one or a few people.
I therefore believe that game development needs to become more hierarchical and author-orientated again. Instead of creative teams where everyone can express their opinion, there should be a boss and lots of helpers who simply fulfil orders based on the boss.

It's another matter that indie games from individual developers often have no soul too. I think that simply has to do with the fact that many of these developers aren't really creative and are simply inspired by what they like and what already exists by the dozen.

People tend to see developers as machines, or as abstract beings that work on a game for X amount of years, and it suddenly pops out, and whether it's good or bad is due to factors outside of anyone's control. The truth is that games suck because the company's got too big, the amount of people working on games got too big and too incompetent, and the souls of those people are benign and uncaring. Skyrim, to me, is one of the greatest games of all time not because the gameplay is sophisticated, but because it marries beautiful scenery with Godly music. To me the artistry of Skyrim is similar to that of The Lord of the Rings, it speaks to an inborn truth that every Man carries in his soul. Oblivion is similar.

Neither of them are good "games", but they have art and they have soul. They have what 90% of games lack.

so you are saying codexers are rejects from other sites?
Wasn't it obvious for a while now? :)
Unfortunately most of them weren't rejected for their superior taste or uncompromising love for turn-based combat, but for dumb political views they were too stupid to shut up about on fucking rpg forums :)

Please keep the political discussions out of this prestigious rpg forum, we're here to talk about our uncompromising love of turn based combat. TIA brotato.
I'd happily discuss the topic of this thread but of 3 modern rpgs I recently played (Heads Will Roll: Reforged, Felvidek, Robocop: Rogue City) all had a ton of soul.

So the premise of this thread seems kind of retarded to me. OP just need to stop being such a graphic whore and leave AAA behind. There's gold to be found in indie and AA sectors.

I have no opinion of Felvidek yet, but Robocop was shoddy shovelware trash that doesn't deserve any discussion. I looked up Heads will roll and not only does it look like a phone game, one of the screenshots has some chick with her disgusting feet on the table, pointing right at your face. It almost made me hurl, what is wrong with you? This is what happens when you're always discussing politics instead of video games, you start to decline in taste and sanity.

How about not judging the game by the screenshots? If you don't want to play it, there's a thread discussing the game here in rpgcodex: https://rpgcodex.net/forums/threads/heads-will-roll-authentic-medieval-dating-rpg.143346/

It's basically a knight simulator akin to Legionary's Life, only with more choices and life paths. Depending on what you do and how much success you achieve you can fight and die in the Hundred Years War, become a mercenary for life, uncover several Satanic plots around Europe, become a confidante of several rulers, take part in a Crusade, a civil war, fight a plague, become a powerful landowner etc. Fair ladies you meet on the way merely add to the rich story and are optional (unless you want to achieve certain endings).

Here I discuss some possible story variations (spoiler warning, ofc): https://rpgcodex.net/forums/threads...entic-medieval-dating-rpg.143346/post-8874039

The game is also tough as nails, with tons of challenging combat, difficult choices and skill checks, especially if you don't abuse the save system.

These have always been problems even for old games. E.g. Last Half of Darkness lacks a coherent plot despite being made by one guy, Starcraft was written by a hack and subject to studio interference, etc.

If the screenshots suck, the game sucks. Screenshots are supposed to grab me and make me imagine all the good times the game will bring me, not repulse me and make me queasy. If they can't even get simple artistic presentation right, then they're not worthy of my attention. We deserve better for our money.

Tim Cain did a video addressing this issue.

tl;dw Developers all follow a formula rather than trying to make something original and fun. Their games might as well be AI-generated at this point.

That's a take worthy of a graphic whore.

If these make you queasy, I don't know what to tell you:

Okay, keep having fun with AAA games then.
