The *capacity* to nuke is important since above level foes will resist your control spells and make the fighter party whiff, especially with the to hit malus from Berserk.

Nukes still do *some* damage even if resisted so a whole party that can stack them when necessary will be more resilient than one that can't. Likewise a party that can see which resist is low can attack that more effectvely than one flying blind. If I'm fighting disabled mobs I'm getting double damage from that with higher to hit and less danger of getting hit than a Berserking Fighter party. Both get double damage, one is just more reliable/resilient. And I end up getting more hit/pens per fight so more skill ups.

Reach is great no doubt, but I don't mind getting some ranged practice in if nothing remains to hit in melee. If that's the case I'm usually winning. T&S level-ups unlock Bombs and Powders, with the special arrows and quarrels for Bow Skill.

They’re putting my kid back in the regular classroom. He’s really doing great making friends and everything. I think some of the autism stuff is overblown.

I’m just older than you faggots. Started gaming before even usenet and listservs were widely used where players were forced to try a lot of shit and learn as you go. So not only is that fun for me it was once just normal and many of the designers of the great games started out in the same boat.

Once we *did* get connected there were a lot of poasts like @sqeecoo’s and mine. Putting it in spoilers is kind of sad in a thread (and forum) that’s struggling for life. Learned so much from Haplo and Daidre in Owlcat games and PoEs etc…

It’s fun to discover ways of playing the game one had never considered before and figuring out how to make it work within your own style.

Tiers and that shit get in the way of that, as does shitting on people who actually use the forums when you’re struggling to keep them alive.

Finally figured out what the Beanie is for.

Faerie Monk can wear it (but not Skullcap). Uncovered body parts take double damage. Likewise with Silken Gloves IIRC.

INT doesn’t actually do anything aside from acting as a controlling attribute and bonuses from items don’t affect skill-ups, so the -10 INT on Beanie doesn’t matter.

Welp, got to Trynnie Tree at lvl 8 (Umpani out of Monastery) and now computer is in the shop.

Design goals and how they did:

(1) Maximizing benefit of Priest

Solution: Gnome INT/PIE to support team and get Powercast ASAP

Bless from lvl one (+2 to hit and AC) made all of Monastery smooth carrying 4 hybrids and a Gadge, even surprise Gregor at lvl three.

Web made Arnika a breeze. By lvl 8 Make Wounds and Paralyze all green and Whirlwind 2 green. Soul Shield up for when Saxx leaves for Mine Tunnels.

Downside: low DEX/STR for weapon skills, nobody developing Mace in party, too much duplication with Lord.

(2) Maxxing Mythology for lvl 10 run to Bela for Ring of Beasts

Solution: DEX/SEN Rawulf Ranger with 3 pts in Myth every lvl

Spell schools progressing reasonably well despite not raising INT due to Rawulf starting Piety. Fighting well with mix of melee and Ranged (first time I’ve tried training AXE). Alch in mid 30s so money situation in hand. Myth at 56 already.

Downside: no Powercast, will take forever to unlock any elite skills

(3) Samurai that gets up to speed on casting ASAP

Solution: Hobbit INT/DEX Mage1/Sam

Already has Powercast unlocked at lvl 8 (!) with four buffs to train it up. Hits hard with No-Dachi. Wizardry well over 30 and schools in ok shape from Mage lvl.

Downside: neither Dual Wielding or Shield trained much at all. Locked into 2-handers. Ranged/Bow skills still pretty low. The usual Piety dump issues.

(4) Getting most out of Monk since not planning to run kill-stealing Robot much.

Solution: Faerie INT/DEX Psi1/Monk
hits often if only hard when fighting disabled mobs, which is pretty often in this party, so MA already approaching 60, which is gradually upping damage. Powercast unlocks soon which will free up points for STR. Pts into Stealth at lvl up making her unhittable.

Downside: neglected Fire and Water schools. Probably should have gotten Light Spellbook over Priest. Miss the Slow spell if only for pulls. Great trainer for Stealth and Shield level-ups when it lands.

(5) Tanky Gadge since all relevant skills already want DEX and Omnigun takes off later.

Solution: DEX/SEN Mook (60 starting STR) with pts in Shield and Eng on lvl after initial boost to L & T. Shield headed to 50 with Heater equipped, Diamond Epee getting Sword and Close Combat going, Omnigun with Impaling Stones solid.

Downside:

None. This is the Gadge I like best. Plenty of time for weapon skills to take off once Haste is up. Lvl 10 Bela run will provide plenty of Strength/Stam.

(6) Tank for front box vs tough foes to take rear out of even extended range.

Solution: Dorf PIE/DEX Lord, pts into DW/T&S on lvl up. Handles Bombs/Powders*, Dam Resist + high Vit + starting equipment = effective damage sponge, casting really took off with high PIE.

* - trains DW and T&S simultaneous with Throwing Knives

Downside: too much duplication with Priest/Vi, starts at zero with Mace. Low INT/SEN means CC/RC slow to skill up.

Party made short work of Monastery but was reliant on consumables on road/northern wilderness/Umpani. Coming into its own at lvl 8 with some long-term issues.

I also started a new game. I am still not decided which mod to play on top of the 1.28 fanpatch. Expanded, Gameplay Overhaul or just simple RandomPasserbys item mod. I welcome suggestions.

Updated, Lord and Ninja duplicate too much. Just Dual Mace the Priest instead of Powercast.

The re-roll:

Issue 1: Priest/Lord duplication, lack of Mace skill

Solution: Priest gives up Powercast to go PIE/DEX DW Maces freeing up slot for Fighter with full Shield/Bow package and allowing Ranger replacement.

Issue 2: Rawulf Ranger going in too many directions, none all that well. Want Powercast on all the hybrids I can to make up for lower caster lvl. Still need max Mythology ASAP from somewhere.

Solution: INT/DEX Felpurr Alch/Ninja gets starting pts in Mythology from Alch, has to dump PIE anyway (only NIN dump stat), but throwing is main action econ due to auto-hit/pen so less of a problem. Can wear Ring of Beasts to top out Mythology skill.

Can spam Itching Skin before transition to Ninja to get good foundation for casting when spells turn back on, while making money from Burz due to high initial Alchemy and smoothing fights. Alch starting game with Itching Skin similar effect to Priest with Bless.

Faerie also option but that fits better for Psi/Monk. Nin requires more STR and doesn’t need Faerie AC bonus as much. Monk wants to train MA instead of Throwing so needs AC to stay in melee range. MA makes up for low Fae STR.

Issue 3: Sam needs more PIE for green circles. SEN is only viable dump stat so could go Dracon, but probably Human or Elf. Will depend how fast Elf can qualify for Sam while also unlocking Powercast by lvl 10 or so.

Issue 4: Psi/Monk lack of Water/Fire development

Solution: Fire is a problem due to no Fire spells before lvl 9. For Water hold off on Monk transition until lvl 4 to spam Slow during lvl 3. Water has no high end but Slow stays useful into midgame (Paralyze book from Anna) and ranks up Psionics skill, eventually Cure Light Cnd is good all game. Can also lvl up Psionics, Mental, Divine, and Air with Mind Stab, Heal, and Sleep. MA will skill up fast under Haste from Saxx eventually.

Fire will eventually be needed for Haste when Saxx leaves during Rift/Bayjin.

Issue 5: Lack of Bow users with no Ranger, lack of Heavy Shield user, general early weakness due to hybrids.

Solution: DEX/SEN Hobbit Fighter. Don’t want to dump PIE on casters (can’t avoid on Ninja), but fine for Fighter. DEX/SEN covers all skill prereqs, unlocks Reflextion/Eagle Eye then STR can go up. SEN controlling attribute for Artifacts (can use Icicle Stix) since Bow means no T&S (NIN can handle Bombs) along with CC and RC.

Line-up:

(1) Rawulf PIE/DEX Priest with starting pts in Divinity, Water, Divine and DW, spell picks Paralyze and Make Wounds, fighting with Mace (from Burz if necessary) and Sling. DW starts training once mobs are reliably disabled/Haste is up. Put pts in it on lvl. PIE will supercharge casting development, DEX will keep Mace progression solid. Will eventually need Reflextion AC boost (no Shield or Stealth). Get all stats to 41 min on creation (floating pt glitch).

Dual-wielding Maces pretty good mid/late.

(2) Human INT/DEX Mag1/Sam. Mage 1 gets spell schools started/allows faster Powercast unlock but additional Mage lvls hurts weapon proc chances too much. Psi/Monk can get away with waiting since MA has no weapon proc (outside crit strike that I don’t care about and small KO chance).

Initial pts in Wizardry, Fire, and Mental. Spell picks Energy Blast and Terror. Fear debuffs AC to help rest of team to hit/pen/skill up. Terror unlocks Mental School. Frost book available in N. Wilderness.

(3) Mook DEX/SEN Gadge with 60 STR. Starting pts in Shield, L&T, and Artifacts to get them started. Once Sparkle Stix are identified they can be used to train at which point start lvling up Eng for Duct Tape/Lightning Rod. Once Heater is obtained Shield will start lvling on its own too.

(4) Felpurr INT/DEX Alch1/NIN pts in Mythology, Alchemy, and Earth. Spells Itching Skin and Heal Wounds, Light from Book (to train for Blinding Flash available to cast at lvl 7, purchased from Kunar).

Hold off on Ninja transition at lvl 2 until money can be made (and Alchemy lvled up) from Burz potion-mixing. Need a character at 15 Artifacts to Identify Heavy Heals. Alchemy turns back on at character lvl 6 in time for Kunar. Can use Thrown autopenetrate for reliable damage vs Gregor.

(5) Faerie INT/DEX Psi3/Monk starting pts in Psionics, Air, and Communications, spells Mind Stab and Sleep. Divine and Heal at lvl 2, Water and Slow at lvl 3.

Would love to put (Ring of Beasts eligible) Felpurr here where Mythology will naturally progress faster, but ability to dump STR and VIT makes Monk too good of a fit for Faerie.

Faerie Ninja more of a solo thing.

(6) Hobbit DEX/SEN Fighter using Sword/Axe, Shield and Bow. Pts in Shield, CC, and Artifacts initially. Weapons will go up naturally.

This line-up will give Vi more to do. Saxx will be around in every area he goes to, and Myles will need to be trained up for Pickpocketing and Rift/Sea Caves.

Hoping to avoid Robot if possible.

Unpopular opinion: Wiz 8 dungeons are bad/meh compared to Wiz 7 dungeons.
Why unpopular, I think it's pretty common take, especially that beside monastery Wiz8 doesn't really have any other proper dungeons. And the ones that can be considered as dungeons (retro ones, mt gigas caves etc) are utter shit.

its a good jagged alliance clone with the dynamic encounters ambushing enemies with items and spells. Jagged alliance games had ton of spiritual sequels it be nice if wizardry 8 had 1. Hybrids and character builds can be annoying till ankhs are found.
