thing I learned the hard way: you can't "deflect" if you're overburdened.

Hi codexers. This is my fight with Lu Bu. I used the best weapon I had (+5) and the damage boost wizard spell. I had to make it quick, tried to kill him before he could get to his 12 attacks combo bullshit phase.

Very short clip, only 1 minute and a half. I hope you enjoy it.

Okay, now that I finished something around 12-15 missions, I must admit that the game is becoming quite repetitive. Not for the locations themselves, since exploring every new scenario it's being the best part of the game. The main issue I'm having is that it seems that the enemy distribution in the levels is exactly the same all the time.

It goes like:
2 - 3 alligators, 5-7 mermaid ladies, 15-20 regular soldiers, 5-10 big soldiers with heavy weapons, 1-2 monkey (the boss from the second stage) and once I faced the piggy again. It seems like there's 6 or 7 different enemies in the game and facing all of them in each and every level it's becoming a chore honestly.

And then there's the bosses. They are a cakewalk, there's no other way to describe them. Of the 12-15 bosses I faced so far, I died to only 3 of them:
The first one, the one that has 500 clones and the one that starts on a horse and them gets out and back again. Also, there was a submission where you have to face 3 bosses at once and I didn't even try it, if that counts for anything.
Every other boss was killed on the first try, something that didn't happen in any other souls, souls-like, nioh, nioh-like etc that I ever played. There's a slight possibility that since I've been playing these games for one decade now, I became a demigod on them, but really I don't think that's the case. And an important thing is that I didn't even mess with magic, boosting damage, and so on. Just pure melee without any kind of help.

I've been no-lifing this game for the past 3 days (I have 22 hours so far) but I'm gonna take a step back and start playing 1 or 2 missions per day. Otherwise, I'll definitely get burned and will eventually drop it.

Edit: Just an extra thing I remember about dying and such. Aside from the deaths for these 3 bosses, I died in ONE stage so far. One death in 15 missions. It seems like there's really something wrong with the balance here.

Interesting, I'm dying quite regularly, but I also feel like I still don't get the deflect system properly. I died to each boss, minimum 3 times, maximum 15 on the first one. Which weapon are you using? Do you consider yourself a player with great reflexes?

Well shit. This worries me about Rise of the Ronin since it appears to only feature human enemies which means even less variety.

Hold down block when you deflect, it acts as a fallback. Also look at your enemy, they telegraph their attacks well in advance.

I'm changing between two weapons: The Jade-Guarded Sword and the Pair Swords of Aspiration. The heavy weapons seems to be quite problematic because the last times I tried them, it looked like I got hit at least twice before finishing the animation for my first attack.

I wouldn't say that I have great reflexes, but I have a good memory and can learn enemy patterns quite fast. The main "issue" here is that I don't even have time to memorize that much because the boss almost dies on the first try. I even thought that something could be wrong with my game (I remember that when Dark Souls 3 came out there were some people on Xbox that were playing the "review version", which was made for journalists and was easier). I didn't read of anything similar happening in Wo Long but it crossed my mind a few times. :negative:

I remember that Nioh was awful in this department. There were enemies like the Yoki that I must have killed at least 300 times in the whole game. Didn't they fix that in Nioh 2?

The game sits on 3rd place on global top sellers list, just behind Sons of the Forest and Hogwarts Legacy. What's the point of optimizing the game, if people will buy nevertheless?

I for one, have faith in Grorious Nipponese Work Ethic and believe they'll fix everything regardless of how it impacts or does not impact sales.

:desu:
They already announced on Steam that they're working on performance and KBM fixes. Whether or not they succeed remains to be seen. I remember some people were complaining that Nioh 2 post-launch patches broke the game for them.

It seems stupid but I just learned that at the second boss after which it became relatively easy. From what I played its way easier parrying in this game than in any other of this kind I played so far. I was never good at it in the souls games but the bosses here are quite easy to parry most of the time. I also noticed theres some parry related stat on teh weapons so maybe it gets harder if thats lower.

Initiating with heavy weapons always begins with their fastest attack, the "run then press x attack", after that you can follow up with anything you want. Initiating a standing X is suicide unless you time it right. Heavy weapons are great otherwise, I started using them now.

EDIT:
I just found out you can cancel out of the standing 'X' attack. This leaves you with more options.

I watched the part about difficult and I couldn't agree more: The first boss is definitely the hardest in the game by a long shot. I remember when I played the demo and thought that not only this is the best first boss of any souls or soulslike game I've played, but that if the game had like 5 or 6 bosses at this level, it would be great. Unfortunately, so far it doesn't get everywhere near that.

Aoye was a massive pain in the ass. Not quite as bad as that stupid spider bull from Nioh 2, but close. Once again confirms my thesis that the bigger the boss, the worse it is to fight.

The difficulty has been on an upward trend for me since around that mission. Zhang Rang went down faster, but was still challenging along with the mission itself. And now I'm up to the snowy battlefield which is likely to be the longest and most arduous mission yet, by a long shot. Props to the devs, I don't feel safe for a second here.

Their mistake was choosing the three kingdoms period instead of the warring states period

The next 2 bosses after Lu Bu are so boring. I just don't want to play anymore. This is 3 kingdoms period which has 1000 interesting human characters. Give me good human fights just like Sekiro, please. What is the point of making a 3 kingdoms game but my bosses are monsters after monsters after monsters. I already have Monster Hunter for that. I know you are capable of making good human fight Team Ninja.

You didn't die on the first tiger encounter? Or first bird encounter? Or even 2 tigers so close to each other? Each of those was multiple deaths for me :/

The more I play, the more unhappy I am to be honest. The game is clearly missing something, it's hard for me to put a finger on it - some levels are way too bright, I don't feel the atmosphere I felt in Nioh 1 & 2, I miss those Yoki / Enki / Tengu encounters, multiple stances, same for Kodama. I feel the game is not polished the same way Nioh games were. At this point: Wo Long << Nioh < Nioh 2.

So much for a launch day patch to fix the pc performance issues. When you miss a deflect it's hard to tell if it's because you screwed up or because of the frametimes jumping all over the place. Also no good reason why it should take so long to load levels. This should probably only be played on a PS5.

This was actually a big positive for me. I was glad they didn't just copy-paste grimdark brooding stage #18. It offers a nice contrast to the dark fantasy that's going on in the landscape, with plenty of opportunity for darker atmospheres to show up here and there.

On another note, when I do end up getting around to playing the full game, I'll probably b-line the main quest line in order to get to new game+ and the additional difficulty ASAP, as it sounds like that's where the challenge should have been on the first playthrough. Solo all the way, of course.
