I've got the itch to try again on a vanilla or tbc. I'll get 350 ms in Oz so PVP servers are out of the question most likely. Is Nostalrius PVE the way to go, I hear lots of problems with chinese players (Russians and Chinese, are always ruining online games)?

100% blizzlike doesn't bother me, but no 12x servers or p2w. Adjusted levelness rates aren't a huge deal if its 2x or changes or special occasions.

PvE is never the way to go, just play a faceroll class and git gud

Play on PvE, PvP server is literally unplayable in locations such as barrens or westfall because of population and there is less lag on the PvE one from what I've been reading.

You can still turn on your PvP flag and q BGs even on the PvE server so it should be fine overall imo

Lot of Ozzies and Kiwis play on the PvP server but if you are allergic to lag, then the PvE server is the way to go. PvP server suffers from additional server lag due to the crazy amount of players, though this largely depends on the time of day you play. Server time 00:00-04:00 is the "quiet" time, because it's mostly NA playing, before that Europeans are still online and after that the Chinese come online. You could look into Ping Zapper or similar, I've heard most Oceanics use them.

As for the Russkies and Chinks, well, the problem is largely overexaggerated on the forums. I still level alts on both Alliance and Horde and while I do run across them, not in any numbers that would bother me. Sure, you see empty chat boxes every now and then but that's it. As for overpopulation, I love it. It does mean you have to forget the usual, modern style of playing an MMO: meaning that you play it largely like a single-player game and join a party just for the occasional instance/flashpoint/whatever. Especially on the PvP server, it's a good idea to either run in a party 24/7 or at least invite people you see at each quest location so you can share kills.

And obviously STVietnam is not a place to go if you get easily butthurt because the ganking is insane in the jungle.

The PVE has a blizzlike population (although it is growing). Leveling up, it doesn't take that long to find a group for instances, especially if you're a tank, and the population isn't so high that you usually have to compete for mobs. At 60, finding groups is a bit harder because I think most tanks are already geared up, but it's doable if you're patient. There are numerous raiding guilds on both sides and many of them are actively recruiting, and at peak times the queue for BGs is pretty short. We're expecting the AV patch any week now.

Thinking of being the most disliked and boring char, a human dps warrior
Also considering rogue but that's what I was in retail, and mage/lock have even easier rotations iirc, with mage literally one button 95% of the time.

But then again, warriors are fucking awful to level, while mage and warlock are two of the best..i expect this decision to prevent me from rolling any char at all.

Started playing so I can see what all the fuss is about without paying. Pretty relaxing but man is the beginning boring.

Yea, the main thing keeping me from trying out one of these vanilla servers is the insane time investment required. I could no-life with the best of them back in '04 when I was still in university, but I have a fraction of that free time available now... not to mention that anything requiring a strict schedule like raiding is right out.

I guess just levelling a character leisurely could work -- though let's be honest, a lot of the vanilla content was pretty damn bad (BC was a huge jump in quality, imo), so that's not particularly inspiring either.

Wut. BC was a drop in quality, at least lore wise with the space goats and blood elves and the silly Outlands. They did introduce a new quest mechanic but that was only utilized by a handful of quests, rest were the same as in vanilla.

As for time investment, playing a few hours a week will get you to 60 eventually. The journey is fun too. Or if you don't find it fun, then obviously don't play. Raiding takes one night a week in a good guild, so it's not that time consuming either.

Warrior isn't that bad as long as you keep up with cooking and first aid, so you have plenty of +stamina food to eat and bandages to wrap yourself into. Plus do all instances as soon as you can tank them to get good gear. Warrior is probably the most gear-dependent class. Mage and warlock are certainly easier, that's for sure.

How close are the combat, xp, drop rate, etc. formulas on these private servers to what vanilla used to be like?

Last time I played Nostalrius, I think they were identical. Usually the problems would be things like odd pathfinding that you wouldn't notice unless you were e.g. aoe frost grinding, but the server downtime, lag, and general player lameness are 100% blizzlike. :smug:

EDIT: Now that I think about it, resource node placement (ie. herbs, ore) isn't blizzlike. Mob placement and spawn rates are often somewhat different (they may have changed all of these things due to the realities of having more players on the server than Blizzard would have).

Most of those mechanics were very well understood even back when vanilla was out 10+ years ago. The only areas where it isn't exact are things like stealth detection, the exact distance where a mob aggros or drops combat, etc, where the exact mechanics aren't well known but just based off of observation and testing on retail over the years.

Alright, this got me curious enough to install WOW1.12 and see what the fuss is all about... and man, it's definitely tugging at my nostalgia strings. Playing WOW where you can actually die doing newbie quests if you aren't careful?! What is this vile sorcery.

Which side are people playing on? Nostalrius PVE server, because I'm too much of a scrub old for this shit...

e: going to play a gnome arms warrior because go gnome or go home.

Herbs and mobs have a dynamic spawnrate on PvP, to accommodate the larger player base. On PvE, they are identical to what was on vanilla back then. Mob placement is a neverending story because so few videos exist of vanilla and because Blizzard reworked lot of the leveling experience in path 2.2 to make it easier for new TBC players to reach Outlands.

I'm on alliance PVE, although lately I've pretty much only been on for raids because I have pretty much all my BIS gear outside ony/MC, and fucking Baron never drops his goddamn AP cloak anyway.

Does anyone have recommendations for a server (Horde preferably) that would fit with a 9pm-midnight EST availability? I have been playing retail WoW but need to take a break. Guild is basically mothballed until Legion and I can't stomach any more logging in just to run garrison missions. I want to say Rebirth is the one I rolled a toon on but it seemed everyone was EU and so when I was able to actually log in there were very few people online :(

Nostalrius has 13k players online atm. I guess with that amount playtime doesnt really matter - there should be plenty of ppl to group with. And the server was quite nice last time i played.

Blizzard just shut down Nostalrius , they must be getting really desperate because of sub drops.

Well, Nostalrius is shutting down on 10th April, as you can read on the official site. I find it really funny that people think "this time it will be different" when a private server is created. Heh.

edit: Oh and while we're at it, don't forget to buy those 200$ Blizzcon tickets, god knows this company is poor and will put this money to a good use!

It's groundbreaking because this is first time that a EU server was targeted and first time that a server which accepted no donations and had no cash shop was targeted. Previously only US servers making money have been shut down by Blizz lawyers. This means that every private server in Europe is in danger.

I was under the impression that the EU servers were pretty well sheltered from this sort of thing.
