Firaxis really did a piss poor job with the optimization.

Wtf lol.

It's 2016
Shitty Optimization is Vogue atm, haven't you heard?
Seriously, wtf if with modern developers optimizing their shit? Do they really think no one would notice their laziness?

You make it sound like it's an afterthought.

"Hi Brian,
remember that optimisation thing we talked about briefly on a scrum three months ago?"

"Hi Matt,
LOL no. Writing code to support facebook integration"

"hah cool, optimise the game if you have a few mins, no biggie if you can't. drinks tonight?
-matt"

"yeah, i'll throw in some optimisation friday night most probs"

This really isn't how it looks like you know.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
Well Witcher 3, GTAV and MGSV had good enough optimization at release. But other than those its opt.hell nowadays.
On the other hand these games without optimization and smooth running, they have almost nothing to offer mechanics-wise. They're simplistic, really pretty games. They would die without optimization

One thing I'm not digging completely is how many damn free turns the aliens get. I do ambush, kill a squad. No more stealth. Then I discover a new gang, and they get to move. Then after that initial move they get to move again, but this time they can attack. I mean, what the hell? They have double free move, I don't know how to avoid getting slaughtered. Maybe I'm not understanding the mechanics yet.

And yeah... Zombra was my first causality hehe. But I'm thinking of restarting.

It's because games are way, way more complex to optimise nowadays than they were a decade ago. They are way more complex in general.

I get the complaints and I'd like to see a patch coming out sooner rather than later too, but talking about dev 'laziness' or stupidity is just ridiculous.

"Optimisation" is far from a straightforward process. Sometimes you can improve performance by using parlor tricks such as freeing up memory/resources such as removing excess objects in certain scenes where you feel fairly confident the player won't be able to look. Then you do things like tweak when do things appear, which often requires surgical precision. THEN you might even reach a point where performance is still shit regardless of what you do, and 'optimisation' means reworking through significant parts of the codebase or doing a full review of assets. Sometimes you need to involve a third party to do some stuff for you as fe. you have no control over the speedtree tech, over Nvidia's drivers, over how DirectX handles things etc etc.

Regardless of what you do, it involves considerable dev&QA time and effort. And now consider that plenty of these things are literally impossible to do until your game is both code and content complete (which usually means you've got maybe 3-4 months before release) as if you start tweaking things while they're still subject to change, you run the risk of wasting hours much better spent elsewhere.

I can whinge about performance as much as the next guy but I won't be calling the devs lazy or stupid because their game doesn't run as smooth as I'd like it to. It's not like putting fucking ketchup on your burger where you need to be an idiot to get it wrong.

All these fucking slowdowns/pauses all the fucking time are driving me bloody insane.

On the map the ship moves so fucking slow and you can't skip it and you have fucking pop-ups all the fucking time. In missions nearly all commands, actions and reactions have slight delays where nobody does fuck all, completely removing any flow in the game. Thought previewers were just their usual self being retarded fucks and just letting things run and whatnot but no, that's just how it is and you can't prevent it.
I keep loading the game up, start playing and just go ballistic with all this shit and ALT-F4. Not even sure I'll be able to actually do a vanilla play this time around damnit.

As an aside, anyone found how to change the male/female ratio for rookies or have default values for armor props/colors?

Just try to use your first guy on your turn to do your exploring. Ideally with only a half move. So if he discovers doods he can still move back into cover and the rest of your team can still go.

If your whole team moves and your very last guy discovers them, then yes, they get a free move into cover and then get to take their normal turn. You get used to it.

Make sure to get a ranger with Phantom, and don't break their concealment in the initial ambush. Then the ranger can act as an almost risk-free scout/spotter for at least the next encounter... and potentially the rest of the map if you don't attack with him/her. If there's no time pressure, you can also abuse this to learn enemy patrol routes and set up overwatch traps with your non-concealed team members, though I haven't had to do this yet. Or just have your squadsight sniper open with a deadeye shot on the highest-priority target with your phantom spotting for them (the target should be out in the open / flanked, so 100+% hit chance if the sniper has a scope / is on high ground). Etc.

I figured out something about "random" rookie promotions: the game "wants" you to have equal numbers of every class. If you have 3 Grenadiers, 3 Sharpshooters, 3 Rangers, and 2 Specialists, your next Squaddie promotion WILL become a Specialist. If you have 3/3/2/2 then it will flip a coin between the last two. Tested on Veteran difficulty only.

The optimization seems to be good for me,the only settings that seems to affect my performance is AA and... that's all, everything seems to be running smooth at 60fp with max settings.

That's on a Xeon E3 1231 and gtx 970.

How's the goddamn loading between mission and after mission?

If you don't like the gender of the random mook you got for some kind of theme, just change it through where you can change their name as well.

They really did not fuck around with difficulties. Commander attempt no 2 ended in another party wipe. Motherfuckers dropped reinforcements almost right on unactivated pod behind the corner.
Hilarity ensues.

Thinking of starting normal ironman to see what's what, cause I get pasted despite the fact I ended the first one on ironman classic :D

As for performance: TURN OFF THE FUCKING ACTION CAMERA. I'm serious. Also drop to FXAA or off the damn thing, because that sure as hell is taxing.

Yeah, I'm really surprised how much FXAA drags down the FPS. Isn't FXAA the "budget" alternative to AA?

If I found the reason of the shitty long loading is due to the retarded coders at Fireaxis code the randomization of the battlefield by computing the actual hi-def megabytes tiles and not by computing through a simple few bytes datafile and only calling the required assets after computation is finished, I going to ram my digital cock down their throats.

Because it goddamn feels like XCOM2 is coded by programmers not native to game development. The speed of everything, and the taxation of the GPU for everything sounds like those clowns tie data computations of everything directly to the models themselves and not through a separate data storage. Which is still fine is your model is a few kb sprite but 3d AAA models aren't known for being small in size.

Ha! Over 98,000 concurrent plays on Steam ATM. I guess this game is quite popular.

V-sync is a huge fps killer in this game, same (if not more) as Msaa. Changing to Adaptive on Nvidia panel and playing in windowed without boards mode, helped a lot

Is it me or the enemies seem to have a much higher chance to hit you even when you are in a cover? And I mean it gets pretty annoying when my twerps barely have a 40-50% chance to hit when the enemy is in front of them, but the enemy seems to hit me from the other part of the map..
