I only use Discord because some communities i like have moved there, but i never use the standalone client - only the web-based interface from my browser. But i'd rather have people use tech they actually have control over instead of relying on some centralized service - there are other free and open source chat apps and protocols like IRC or Matrix, you can get a cheapass $3/month VPS, dump some server on it have your community there under your own control (and if the VPS bans you or something just get another one, there are hundreds of them). It isn't like text communication needs any bandwidth.

But no, what people do is go to Discord or Twitter or Youtube or other centralized service, get banned for whatever reason, go cry and then they move to *another centralized service* because this time will be better.

I mean, sure, not everyone wants or knows or cares about setting up their own servers but if you are going to use someone else's service and have control over that decision (ie. it is you making it) then at least use something that has an open protocol so you can switch to something else if something goes wrong. Especially for transient stuff like chatting, etc.
