About an hour in to System Shock 2, so far, not impressed

I finished SS2 last year and it is, hands down, along Half-Life 2, the best shooter (with RPG elements) I've played in a long while. I think it is just so surprising how well the design of the ship aged. The square corridors and gloomy, lightmapped rooms of the Von Braun look acceptable, even today. The gameplay also held up surpringly well, only becoming dull and a bit repetive after leaving the Von Braun through the umbilical .

Enjoy the Revolution! Another revolution around the sun that is.
SS2 is a great, wonderfuly unstreamlined game and I had a blast playing the GOG version after all those years. But tbh I still remember I was a bit disappointed with the game when I bought it on launch. It's a slightly declined sequel to the SS1 which is gorgeousness and gorgeousity made flesh and one of the best games ever made.

I loved the game when I played it at the age of 13. frankly my instincts tell me there is no point in replaying it now and that is clamorously overrated. But whatever

Roguey, is that more Sawyer wisdom? Is Silent Hill 2 a bad game because the combat is clunky?
No, because Silent Hill 2 is an adventure game with combat elements.

System Schlock 2 was never a good shooter.

"Wahhh weapons are not REALISTIC! I'm doing banal things like fixing elevators instead of saving the world by pressing awesome buttons! Atmospheric terror-like game doesn't pause or do cutscenes to let me hear the audio logs! It also breaks my resources, so I don't feel like a badass marine with 10 weapons!"

That's some review...
Perhaps you might also be interested in Dead Space a game where you literally are an engineer whose job is to repair things.

You mean all those "OMG OMG SS2 best game ever wheeeee"? Yeah, this is overrated :)

But saying SS2 is a fantastic survival with great mood and story is just about right.

Roguey actually scores a major own goal ITT.

System Shock 2 is a great example of a game that avoids "binary win/lose scenarios" of the kind that Josh Sawyer et al dislike. Individual enemies and encounters in SS2 are weak, and once you've activated the level's resurrection chamber you can't even die. Instead, your performance in the game is measured by your preservation of strategic resources over the long term.

In other words, in SS2, instead of failing a saving throw and instantly dying, or failing to upgrade the correct stat or skill and suddenly running into an impassable brick wall, your situation slowly degrades, giving you plenty of time and opportunity to turn things around and make a comeback.

Yeah, so? Playing it as a shooter is fail anyways. Would like to inform me that RE2 sucks as an action game too?

The only bad part is when it becomes Quake 2 near the end.
Yep, from Rickenbacker onward the game gives a distinct "Where has all the money gone?" feeling, culminating in the horrible "Body of Many" clusterfuck.

Edgies gonna edgy. TVTropes can be good for a laugh, as long as you don't get too obsessed with it or take it too seriously.

One thing that always irked me about SS2 was the Fusion Cannon being such a weak-ass weapon. One of the most terrible BFGs ever.

Great review, let me do a tl;dr of it:

1. Immersion, immersion, immersion, immersion, 8===o, immersion, immersion.
2. OMG, there is a game here, manifested by the abhorrent gameplay mechanics, that ruins my immersion.
3. Shitfuckcunt, with loads of "ironic" "humor", cause I'm witty like that.
4. This sucks, you should obviously play some Japanese games on Playstation.

No, it's totally shit all the way through. Hardly any crate ducking, no SHOOTAN at streams of 100000 enemies pouring down a corridor, no health regen and worst of all no IRON SITES. Not even any ridonkulously shiny faces thanks to lack of bloom. Just quit now, install CoD XVIII and enjoy like a true connoisseur of monocle gaming.

What's the issue with TVTropes, anyway?

It can be an entertaining website if, like Infinitron says, you don't take it too seriously. The main problem is when retards use it for research to try to make themselves look clever or when they quote it like any annoying meme. They don't take into account that sometimes the examples used on these tropes are either a) missing the point or b) vague in what the actual context is. Take a look at some of the entries for crowning moment of awesome or nightmare fuel pages and I swear it's filled with the most emotionally manipulated people.

What I don't get is why people get so upset over RPGs from the first person perspective. People like that reviewer will literally write the equivalent of "character skill based combat is fine in third person perspective but like anal stitches & rotavirus in first person perspectives." I get that between a traditional FPS and a traditional RPG, there's a perform action vs. order action to be performed distinction. But you don't hear tards whining about Diablo's action gamey click = attack having skill dependent CtH and damage. I really think it's the perspective that breaks people.

Also, it really bothers me that people think FPP means FPS. What about we call System Shock 2 a FPP RPG with FPS elements?
