POWER STRUGGLE IN NORTH-KOREA?

Conflicting reports arriving from the isolated country seem to indicate that the country is in turmoil. The recently promoted General Secretary of the Workers Party, the de facto leader, Kim Jong-un, has not been seen in public for the last month, spurring on rumours of a possible coup. Meanwhile, there has apparently been some sort of violent clashes on the streets of Pyongyang, the capital. Experts speculate that the young Kim Jong-un never managed to consolidate his power and now infighting between the military and the Party, or at least factions amongst them, has spilled to the streets. Naturally, all these reports are unconfirmed at this moment.

AMERICAN MASS DRIVER OFFICIALLY IN BUSINESS

Delegations from several foreign states were witnessing as the President of the United States pushed, for the very first time, the launch button and "shot" a small scientific satellite to space today. While the European Union won the prestige race for the very first operational mass driver, the race for a fully functional space port is still on as feverish construction takes place in both Europe and America.

One Child Policy No More

Administrator Xiao Qiao Shi today announced that China's controversial One Child Policy is to be abolished, "Now that the stars shall become open to us thanks to the discovery of trans-newtonian materials, China is no longer bound by the resources of this Earth, and our people shall populate the stars." She said in an official statement today. China's population is expected to experience a significant increase in growth during the coming decades.

There have been quite a few questions about these so I decided to write a short description of each tech currently available for players.

EXPLANATION OF THE TECH TREE.

Biology:
  • Genome Sequence Research - 5000 RP - Unlocks DNA altering research, possibility to modify humans into new species.
  • Terraforming Module - 5000 RP - ship module for terraforming.
  • Terraforming Rate 0.0012 atm - 3000 RP - Increases the atmosphere rate of each terraforming installation and module.
Construction & Production
  • Asteroid Mining Module - 5000 RP - Required for ships to begin mining asteroids/comets. Not every asteroid has minerals.
  • Construction Rate 12 BP - 3000 RP - Increases the build rate of each Construction Factory from 10 -> 12 build points.
  • Fighter Production Rate 12 BP - 3000 RP - Same for Fighter Factories.
  • Fuel Production 24,000 litres - 3000 RP - Same for Fuel Refineries.
  • Mining Production 12 tons - 3000 RP - Same for mines/auto-mines.
  • Research Rate 240 RP - 5000 RP - Improves the annual output of each Research Lab from 200 -> 240.
  • Shipbuilding Rate 560 BP - 5000 RP - Same for shipyards (both military & commercial)
  • Shipyard Operations: 5% Time/Cost Saving - 2500 RP - Speeds up all SY operations by 5%
  • Sorium Harvester - 5000 RP - ship module for harvesting gas giants for sorium and turn it into fuel. Not every gas giant has sorium.
  • Expand Civilian Economy by 20% - 5000 RP - Increases the size and efficiency of the civilian sector, bringing in more wealth.
Defensive Systems
  • Alpha Shields - 1000 RP - First version of shields. Protects against all weapons except mesons. Weak against microwaves. Shields must be turned on to be useful and consume fuel and shine brightly in every EM sensor.
  • Cloaking Theory - 10,000 RP - Unlocks all cloak technology.
  • Damage Control - 5000 RP - ship module for repairing battledamage in hours instead of days. Gives 10 repair points whereas engineering space gives only 1. Battlefield repairs require 2x maintenance supplies.
  • Duranium Armour - 500 RP - First TN-hull for ships. You can build ships with conventional hulls but they are heavier. Thus each generation of armour makes the protective belt lighter, so you can have have more armour for the same Weight/Thrust ratio than before.
  • Shield Regeneration Rate 1 - 1000 RP - How fast shields recover.
  • Thermal Reduction: Signature 75% Normal - 1500 RP - Reduces engine signature so that thermal sensor won't pick them up as easily.
Energy Weapons
  • 10cm Laser Focal Size - 1000 RP - Smallest "calibre" of lasers. Defines the damage output and power requirement of a weapon.
  • 10cm Meson Focal Size - 1000 RP - Same for mesons.
  • 10cm Microwave Focal Size - 1000 RP - Same for HPM.
  • 15cm Carronade - 1000 RP - Same for plasma.
  • Infrared Laser - 500 RP - First generation laser type. Defines the range and power requirement of a weapon.
  • Meson Focusing Technology 1 - 1000 RP - Same for mesons.
  • Microwave Focusing Technology 1 - 1000 RP - Same for HPM.
  • Particle Beam Range 60,000 km - 1000 RP - Self-explanatory.
  • Particle Beam Strength 2 - 1000 RP - Defines the damage output.
  • Reduced Size Laser 0.75 Size/4x Recharge - 5000 RP - Miniaturization of lasers, 75% of original size but due to smaller capacitors, quadruples the recharging time.
  • Turret Tracking Speed (10% Gear) 2000 km/sec - 1000 RP - How efficient the turning gear is in turrets. With this tech, if 10% of turret size is gear, it's tracking speed is 2000 km/sec.
Logistics & Ground Combat
  • Additional Maintenance Storage - 1000 RP - Storage methods that'll allow ships to store extra MSP without penalties.
  • Boat Bay - 1000 RP - Ship module that allows a vessel to carry smaller vessels inside.
  • Cargo Handling System - 1000 RP - Helps loading and unloading of both cargo, passengers and troops. There can be several on board a single ship if extreme turnover speed is required.
  • Colonization Cost Reduction 5% - 10,000 RP - Improves the habitability index of planets by 5%, meaning that they require less infrastructure for colonies.
  • Combat Drop Module, Battalion - 3000 RP - Ship module that allows a battalion to insert into a combat zone ready for battle. No facilities mean that troops won't like being in these for long periods of time.
  • Combat Drop Module, Company - 6000 RP - Ship module that allows a Marine company to commit boardings or enter combat zones ready for battle. No facilities either.
  • Command Module - 2000 RP - For fighters and other small ships, has room for 20 crew. Basically smallest version of crew quarters.
  • Crew Quarters, Small - 1000 RP - for small craft, has room for 50 crew. Smaller version of the standard crew quarters (room for 250).
  • Cryogenic Transport - 1000 RP - Allows the transportation of 10,000 civilians in frozen sleep.
  • Engineer Brigade - 5000 RP - Special unit that can explore alien ruins, fight and operate as a Construction Factory.
  • Engineering Section, Small - 2000 RP - Smaller version of standard Engineering Section for smaller ships.
  • Flag Bridge - 1000 RP - Ship module that has room and communications for TF staff. In game-terms, allows the TF Commander & staff to accompany their ships into other systems, bringing their bonuses with them.
  • Fuel Storage, Small - 1000 RP - Smaller version of standard Fuel Storage for smaller ships.
  • Garrison Battalion - 1000 RP - Military unit. Lightly equipped and armoured. Cheap.
  • Ground Unit Strength 12 - 1000 RP - Improves basic GU strength from 10 -> 12. Essentially new weapons, vehicles, equipment, etc. All military units have basic strength that is then multiplied by their own TO&E.
  • Improved Command and Control - 5000 RP - Creates a necessary extra layer of bureaucracy above the planetary level, bringing sectors into play.
  • Maintenance Module - 5000 RP - ship module that allows routine maintenance of other ships, like maintenance facilities in colonies.
  • Mobile Infantry Battalion - 2500 RP - Basic Military unit. Can dig-in quickly, meaning it's better on defence than on offence but can perform both tasks. Fairly cheap.
  • Orbital Habitat Module - 5000 RP - ship module. Has room for 50,000 civilians and brings artificial gravity. Ships that have OH-modules in them can be built by Construction Factories in addition to Shipyards.
  • Replacement Battalion - 500 RP - Military unit. These soldiers have gone through basic training but no more. Can replace the losses of other, more valuable units, quickly.
  • Salvage Module 500 - 5000 RP - ship module that allows salvaging of wrecks.
  • Small Troop Transport Bay - 2000 RP - ship module that has room for a Marine company, enabling them to travel in relative comfort.
  • Troop Transport Bay - 2000 RP - ship module that has room for an entire battalion, enabling them to travel in relative comfort.
Missiles & Kinetic Weapons
  • 10cm Railgun - 1000 RP - Smallest calibre of railguns. Determines damage output and power consumption of a weapon.
  • Railgun Launch Velocity 1 - 1000 RP - Determines range of a weapon.
  • Enhanced Radiation Warhead (50% Yield, 2x Rad) - 1000 RP - Missiles with this warhead cause less physical damage and more radiation damage. Basically, saves the industry while killing the population.
  • Gauss Cannon Launch Velocity 1 - 1000 RP - Determines range of GC.
  • Gauss Cannon Rate of Fire 1 - 1000 RP - Determines how many shots GC fires every 5 seconds.
  • Implosion Fission Warhead: Strength: 3xMSP - 2000 RP - Missiles with this warhead cause three times their size in damage. Meaning that size 3 warhead would be counted as size 9 for damage, penetrating 3 layers of armour with a damage profile of 5-3-1. Size 4.3 warhead would be counted as size 13 for damage, penetrating also 3 layers of armour with a damage profile of 7-4-2.
  • Magazine Ejection System, 70% Chance - 500 RP - The probability of a magazine safely ejecting its content into space in case of catastrophic damage. If this roll fails, the magazine explodes inside the ship.
  • Magazine Feed System Efficiency, 75% - 1000 RP - How much of magazine space is available for missiles. Higher percentage means that the feeding system is smaller, leaving more room for ordnance.
  • Missile Agility 32 per MSP - 2000 RP - Determines how agile missile are per single Missile Size Point. Agility is the ability of a missile to avoid point-defence fire and anti-missile missiles.
  • Missile Launcher Reload Rate 2 - 2000 RP - The size of a launcher that can be reloaded in 30 seconds. Smaller launchers can be reloaded faster, whereas larger ones take more time.
  • Ordnance Production 12 BP - 3000 RP - Improves the building rate of Ordnance Factories from 10 -> 12.
  • Reduced-size Launcher 0.75 Size / 2x Reload - 1000 RP - Miniaturization of missile launchers. Miniaturized launchers can launch normal-sized missiles, just taking longer to reload.
Power & Propulsion
  • Capacitor Recharge Rate 2 - 2000 RP - The amount of power an weapon can recharge in 5 seconds.
  • Fuel Consumption: 0.9 litres per Engine Power hour - 1000 RP - Save on fuel consumption. Affects both engines and shields.
  • Hyper Drive Size Multiplier 2.0 - 2000 RP - Hyper Drives are special engines that can only operate outside the "hyper-zone" of a star. They allow vastly increased movement rates but are also larger and consume more fuel. In Sol, the "hyper-zone" stops just outside the orbit of Neptune.
  • Maximum Engine Power Modifier x1.25 - 1000 RP - Engines can be boosted, though fuel efficiency will suffer.
  • Minimum Engine Power Modifier x0.4 - 1000 RP - Engine power can be reduced, improving fuel efficiency.
  • Jump Point Theory - 5000 RP - An idea that postulates that its possible to "jump" between star systems due to gravitational anomalies.
  • Reactor Power Boost 5%, Explosion 7% - 1000 RP - Provides power increase for reactors but also increases risk of reactor explosion if damaged.
  • Pressurized Water Reactor - 1500 RP - The first generation reactor necessary for all energy production in ships, especially engines.
Sensors & Fire Control
  • Active Grav Sensor Strength 10 - 1000 RP - First generation gravitational active sensor, spots ships based on their size. Required for targeting weapons. Active.
  • Beam Fire Control Range 10,000 km - 1000 RP - The distance that a BFC gives the weapon it controls a 50% hit chance. BFCs can be built in different sizes that affect their range. Active.
  • Beam Fire Control Speed 2000 km/s - 2000 RP - The speed of a target that a BFC gives the weapon it control a 50% hit chance. BFCs can be bult in different sizes that affect their speed rating. Active.
  • Electronic Hardening Level 1 - 2500 RP - Makes electric equipment less vulnerable to HPM.
  • Electronic Warfare - 5000 RP - Unlocks the EW tech-tree.
  • EM Sensor Sensitivity 6 - 2000 RP - Second generation Electro-Magnetic sensors, spots ships based on their active sensor and shield emissions. Passive.
  • Geological Survey Sensors - 1000 RP - Ship module required for mineral surveying all bodies. Passive.
  • Planetary Sensor Strength 300 - 3000 RP - Improves the sensitivity of Deep Space Tracking Stations on colonies. Passive.
  • Thermal Sensor Sensitivity 6 - 2000 RP - Secong generation Thermal sensors, spots ships based on their engine output. Passive.
  • Max Tracking Time vs Missiles 20% - 5000 RP - The size of a bonus to hit-chance for PD-fire after tracking incoming missiles.
Note that this is not, by any means, the complete tech-tree. This is just what is available to players at the start, after researching "TN-tech". Naturally many of these techs can be improved again and again, while some open up new research possibilities. Hopefully this will help you plan your "race" a little better.

Oh and all players have certain technologies already - EM and Thermal sensitivity 5 if you want to start building passive sensors, conventional engines for really slow ships (think modern chemical rocket engines), crew quarters, bridge, fuel storage and engineering space, cargo hold and basic missile tech for building ICBMs and such. So as soon as the first SY is done, one could already start building ships without researching any of the above stuff.

It would be quite difficult to hit anything moving above 1k km/s but it already gives a fairly respectable range, thanks to Sorium fuel. Depending on their orbital phases, it's enough to hit Mercury, Venus and Mars from Earth. Of course, you'd need quite a few of these to do anything with a WH 1 but it's small enough to be put on a ship. If you'd just want some planetary bombardment muscle, fired from PDCs on Earth, then this one would suffice.

That's a 150 ton missile but with a WH-40 it'll splatter anything it actually hits. And with that range, Mars isn't safe even if it's on the other side of the Sun.
Well, those are just examples. As I said, it's entirely possible to start designing and building improved stuff. You just need some ordnance factories to build the missiles and a shipyard for the vessels.

The number of explosions seems to indicate that this could be an actual missile barrage from North-Korea instead of some other explanation. NORTH KOREA INVADES OUR LANDS!

Today, on 8 July 2013, our beloved Federation was viciously and deliberately attacked by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Seoul is currently being ravaged by enemy bombardments, and North Korean infantry and armour divisions are advancing into the Korean Demilitarised Zone. This is no mere border conflict - it is a full-scale invasion.

Know that we were at peace with this nation. Our diplomats were even involved in friendly conversation with its government, seeking to secure a treaty to promote peace and prosperity on the Korean peninsula. Our offer of help and assistance to our Korean brothers was initially well received, and our expectations were high for a peaceful settlement to the long and bitter conflict between our peoples.

And yet, malignant forces among the North Korean military would have none of it. Those fanatics, who harbour a deep hatred for anything related to peace and democracy, went so far as to stage a coup to prevent reconciliation. Following several days of murder and mayhem, these coup-makers have now killed General Secretary Kim Jong-un and have taken full command of the North Korean armed forces, directing them south to forcibly annex our sovereign territory.

The North Korean attacks have caused severe damage among Seoul's residential areas, and countless civilians have lost their lives as a result. There is no cause for panic, however. Our people are calm and firm, and the enemy has lost its moment of surprise. Rest assured, citizens: these atrocities will not stand. We will avenge our fallen and restore rightful rule and order on the peninsula, once and for all. In our righteous might, we will achieve absolute victory!


Russian Federation intervenes - Ultimatum to North Korea!

Our good friends and allies in the Russian Federation have come to our aid in our defensive war against North Korea. They offer their full support in subjugating and disarming the coup-makers in power, and following a brief meeting between our leaders, the East Asian Federation and the Russian Federation hereby present a co-signed ultimatum to the North Korean regime:

Let it be known that any use of nuclear weapons by North Korea against the East Asian Federation, the Russian Federation or any of their respective allies will be met with massive retaliation from both our powers. We acknowledge that North Korea possesses some intercontinental ballistic nuclear missiles, but we also wish to make it clear that our combined nuclear arsenal outnumbers that of North Korea by more than seven to one.

If North Korea fires as much as a single nuclear missile, its entire nation will be completely and utterly destroyed in return. As long as North Korea refrains from engaging in nuclear warfare, the East Asian Federation and the Russian Federation will do the same.

The SEA people will stay strictly neutral in this conflict per standing diplomatic treaty with both sides. However, we desire safety from this. Therefore, any and all missle from any nation fly across or stray into SEA air space will get shot down unasked. It's a strictly peaceful and defensive stance, not as action to take side. As long as your ground troops stay out of our soil, we consider the truce is unbroken.

For the protection of the North Korean people, the PLA has been mobilised and moves to Pyongyang. "Acts of aggression cannot be tolerated in the international community. We urge all involved in this unfortunate conflict to avoid a nuclear solution." Spokesperson Tsai Hu Wu said.

Then the Portuguese Empire took to the seas, and proved themselves the greatest navigators of the world. No place in the world, not even distant Australia, remained untouched by the mighty Lusitans. Saddly, the empire eventually disintegrated, but the memory of it remains forever. It is time to ressurrect it. With new technology and Trans-Newtonian minerals, it is time to create a new empire, this time on the seas. The Portuguese people were know for being the masters of the sea. Let us now be masters of the void between planets.

Although I remain cricizing the current regime of our country, I believe it was a wise decision to stop pursuit of my person. To waste money pursuing a lone man with different ideas while people die of hunger is a mistake. This shows that perhaps the current regime eventually will learn common sense and adopt a superior regime. Only though a proper conservatist Constitutional Monarchy our people can prosper. Perhaps the current regime can still be dealt with though proper diplomatic channels, befitting of moncled gentlemen of proper brazilian mixed-race breeding, instead of the brutal means used by socialist illiterate brutes whose minds are frenzied by hurtful european philosophies.

Still, the state propaganda remains as dangerous as ever. The propaganda machine of the state never sleeps, its lies ever-spreading. The new-found wealth of our country is a lie. I have factual proof that behind the immense firewall erected by the government, lies a country in need of proper governance. The people, as always, manipulated by their masters, still believe in the ridiculous myth of "Democracy", of uncontrollable mob rule. The common working man, although dutyfull and always a asset to his people, has no capacity to directly rule his country. What is necessary is a illuminated, meritocratic elite that decides on matters of state, yet without ceasing to hear the people's input, with a desire borne not out of greed, but by genuine desire to elevate their country to great power. This is where the Monarch comes in, for he is the true voice of people, above parties and organizations, loyal only to Brazil as a nation. Attention to all people: The So-Called Post-Scarcity Miracle is a lie perpetrated by the state in the name of forced collectivism!

I also have to note the hurtful influence of latino-american socialists on our "dear leader". His constant use of Spanish to designate the Socialist Republic causes degeneration of our nationalism. The learning of Esperanto erodes our lingual unity. Esperanto is a failure. The only language spread by Brazil should be portuguese, forever and ever.

Only though a proper, united Brazil free of dangerous foreign influece, under a Constitutional Monarch, we can truly prosper.

In accordance with the Europeans Unions treaty of mutual defense with the East Asian federation and the Russian federation the European union officially declares war on North Korea. We further state our intention to fully back our allies in this conflict against North Korea as well as any powers that would enter on their side in this conflict. Our allies shall receive the full support of the European Union Armed Forces until the end.

WAR IN KOREA!

The army of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), or as it is commonly known, North-Korea, have started their invasion of South-Korea, now a member of the East Asian Federation. The attack started with a bombardment of Seoul and the De-Militarized Zone. Casualties in the South-Korean capital have been heavy - while exact numbers are still not known, Red Cross and the authorities estimate the death toll to be over twenty thousand people. We still do not have any news from the front lines but the sounds of fighting are easy to hear. North-Korea has announced that its war against EAF is retaliation after the Federation committed "gross acts of sabotage, murder and espionage" against the DPRK.
